The ninth-ranked Tennessee softball team (30-5) used solid pitching outings from freshman Ashton Ward and senior Megan Rhodes to ease past David Lipscomb (13-16) in a doubleheader at Lee Softball Stadium on Tuesday night, 8-0 and 4-1.
Ward (16-3) pitched the opener in complete-game style, giving up five hits and striking out six in five innings.
Sophomore catcher Tiffany Huff (1-for-3) blasted a three-run home run - her second of the season - in Tennessee's five-run fourth. Tennessee sophomore Anita Manuma added a two-run single in the fourth, leading to the departure of Lipscomb starter Christen Campbell (7-6).
Rhodes (14-2) struck out 12 and walked two across 6 2<0x2044>3 innings in the second game. Ward came on in relief and struck out the one batter she faced.
Junior left fielder Lillian Hammond (2-for-3) slapped an inside-the-park homer to center field in the second to drive in three runs for UT.
Huff, who scored on the play, went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Tennessee logged 10 hits in 27 at-bats, striking out just three times against Alaina Jacobson (4-3).
