Spotting a visiting underdog two runs in the first inning isn't exactly textbook winning strategy. But the Tennessee baseball team managed to get away with it Tuesday night in a 9-4 victory over USC-Upstate at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
The left side of the Vols' infield - shortstop Danny Lima and third baseman Cody Brown - sparkled offensively, combining to go 4-for-5 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Lima (2-for-2) had two doubles and one of Tennessee's seven walks.
Tennessee coach Todd Raleigh used five pitchers to shutdown the Spartans (10-13). Junior Ty'Relle Harris (2-0) started and went a predetermined three innings. He gave up a two-run homer to Phillip Morgan (2-for-5) in the first.
But Tennessee (15-7) went ahead for good with five runs in the second. Brown singled in first baseman Yan Gomes to ignite the outburst. Lima and freshman P.J. Polk followed with two-run doubles.
Zane Stone, D.J. Leffler, Bryan Powell and Ryne Simpson worked the final six innings for the Vols, allowing no earned runs and striking out three.
