Stewart Ellington, a former star runner at the University of Tennessee, won the fourth annual Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon on Sunday morning in 2 hours, 28 minutes, 36 seconds.

Melissa Gillette of Niles, Mich., won the women's marathon in 3:02.51.

Gillette's husband, Justin, won the marathon last year.

William Serem of Kenya was first in the half marathon in 1:07.29. Ashley Ritchey of Fort Wayne, Ind., was the women's half marathon winner in 1:21.42/

Ellington had run the half-marathon the past three years, but this year decided to make a hard push at winning the full marathon.

"It's kind of been building over the last three years," Ellington, 33, a four-time All-American distance runner at the UT said earlier this month. "Over the last three years I've gotten more serious."

Ellington, originally from San Jose, Calif., is a nurse anesthetist in Knoxville.

After finishing at UT in 1996, Ellington ran for adidas for three years, mostly in the United States, and then attended graduate school at UNC Charlotte and earned his master's degree in late 2001.
