Schutte wins in last match on UT courts
The University of Tennessee women's tennis team's easy victory over Alabama on Sunday lacked the drama of Friday's one-point win over Auburn.
However, the match did have some emotion.
Senior Ghizela Schutte was playing in her last regular-season match at UT Varsity Courts.
She went out on a positive note, winning both her singles and doubles matches to give the 20th-ranked Lady Vols (13-5, 6-2 SEC) a 7-0 victory.
Schutte and Rosalia Alda teamed up at No. 2 doubles to win 8-2, and then Schutte defeated Paulina Bigos at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2. She also was the first Tennessee player to finish.
"I think it was more of a proud day than a sad day," said Schutte, a South African who was recruited in high school while playing in a tournament in Miami by UT co-head coach Mike Patrick. "It was fun."
No. 5 player Jennifer Meredith was the second to win singles, prevailing 6-1, 6-2 over Shelley Godwin.
As against Auburn, the fourth and deciding point against Alabama (6-11, 2-6) came from No. 1 Lady Vol Caitlin Whoriskey. In contrast to having to come back and win in three sets, as she did Friday, the sophomore defeated Tiffany Welcher, 6-4, 6-4, trailing only briefly in the second set.
Samantha Orlin won 6-4, 6-4 over Alice Tunaru at No. 3.
Zsofia Zubor and Alda, the No. 4 and 6 players, respectively, both won 10-point tiebreakers held in lieu of third sets.
In doubles, Whoriskey and Zubor won 8-2 at No. 1, and Connor Vogel and Meredith won 8-4 at No. 3.
"Any win in the conference is good," said Patrick. "And to get everybody to win made it special. We have all overcome a few little injuries."
Patrick also was pleased with how the two players did in the tiebreakers.
"To outwork them in the end makes me feel good about what we have done in practice," he said.
Besides two more wins that put her in the top 15 in school history for doubles victories, Schutte will be leaving Tennessee with a few memories.
"It is the time of my life I will never forget," she said. "Once a Lady Vol, always a Lady Vol."
Patrick, in turn, will not forget her.
"She is one of the kids you will remember a long time here," he said.
