NASHVILLE - Lawmakers have passed a resolution honoring University of Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt, who led the Lady Vols to the 2008 NCAA championship.
The House resolution was sponsored by Democrat Craig Fitzhugh of Ripley, who called Summitt "the greatest coach in America."
Pegram Republican Phillip Johnson told fellow representatives to remember that "when it came to bringing a national championship to Tennessee, the right man for the job was a woman."
Summitt told the legislators the 2008 team was unique in that "never in the history of the WNBA has a team had five starters go in the WNBA draft."
House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh also praised Summitt's 100 percent graduation rate for all players who have finished their careers at UT.

I find the 100% graduation rate most impressive. With the recruits that she gets the amazing thing is that they ever lose... Graduating all of the players is a greater uphill battle.

Pat Summitt, the greatest coach in America!

When are they going to vote on giving Pat her own State Holiday? Maybe when she wins number Ten!

I would argue against Pat being the best coach in America. There are many coaches at the top of their respective sports that coach against much stiffer competition. There is no definite answer, but I don't think that its Summit. She is hands down the best in women's basketball...

I would argue for Pat being the best coach in America. Their are not many coaches at the top of the game who have done much better for a longer period of time, regardless of the competition, competition is comptition. The answer is definite and a resounding YES, you are coach, the best. But she may not be the best in the women's just the most winningest!!

Congratulations - your many achievements are impressive and you are certainly among the greatest coaches in all of sport

If you have read her book, you would know that that she simply loves to teach. And not just about basketball, about life. She knows that the WNBA is a short, non-sustainable paycheck for a woman, thus the emphasis on graduation.
alfrizzle, I respectfully disagree. She is the best at what she does, and that's coaching basketball and preparing these women for things outside of the sport.

She is the best coach ever. Don't forget it took John Wooden 16 years to win his first championship. Let's also remember Tn. has lost the Championship games several times and many times they have lost in the final four. This program is amazing. The best thing is Pat is still has down to earth as one could be being in her position.

You can and do make a convincing argument that she is the best in the country. I'm just not sure I buy it when I look at some of the other great coaches around sports.
I agree with you though about her preparing kids for life. It is a shame that the same emphasis doesn't get put on other sports. That is one of the reasons I respect Fulmer so much. He honestly seems to care about his kids.
Again, Summit is a great coach. I am not trying to argue against that.

Ms Pat is the best coach.
Has anyone read her book? Great book.
OK, now let's start a little guessing game.
Who and when will be the team that the Lady Vols beat for Ms Pat's 1000 win? As the schedule for next year is not out (at least I cannot find it)I say it will be early January 2009, I say by January 11, 2009, that game will be a home game and a sellout and the Lady Vols will Orange Crush the team by at least ten points! Pure speculation on my part, but next year will be a great time for Ms Pat and the Lady Vols. I for one can't wait for it. Let the show to begin!

Hey alfrizzle:
Guess what? Nobody cares what you think....Please go and give your worldly advice to people who really want and need it....Like the Alabama football program.......You can't rain on this parade. We love coach Summitt. We have to, or we'll be running ladders all day.....................

Afrizzle, by the numbers:
* Attended EVERY NCAA tournament since its inception
* And not just made the tourney, made the Sweet 16, EVERY TIME
* Eighteen of those times in the Final Four
* Eight of those National Champs
* Oh, and there's that more winningest coach thingy.
By the time coach Summit retires (probably sometime in the 2030s, as she just loves coaching so much), UT will have to build a new building to hold all the trophies, awards, and accolades she'll have amassed. Or maybe they'll just add on a wing to the Women's College Basketball Hall of Fame... heck, maybe the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Didn't mean to offend anybody. I am not a particularly large fan of women's basketball (though I am large), but I still pull for the Lady Vols. Again, my worldly opinion is that Pat is indeed a great coach, and I never tried to give any advice. I don't want to be another Silent_Fulmer or WorkinlikeHeck and didn't mean to "rain on anyone's parade."

I love Pat Summitt.... I live in Lubbock, Tx the home of the Texas Tech Red Raiders, and I'm pretty prejudiced for them, but Pat stands in a class all her own!!!!

Sucks at what? I know she can coach so I know thats not it. I also hear she is a great cook as well so that ain't it either. Can't find much bad about her to say she sucks.

blynn2...I wish they would remove the graffiti from our posts......
Coach Pat Summitt is the best and anyone should be proud to have her teach their child about life & basketball ! Long live "The Summitt".

It is SUCH A JOKE that Geno won the Coach of the year. Pat Summit is a living legend. She wasn't in the top five of CoachoftheYear voting because people cannot COMPREHEND how amazing she is.
PAT SUMMIT = GREATEST COACH OF ALL TIME
