Holly Warlick went for a second interview Friday with South Carolina about its women’s basketball head coaching vacancy.
This time the trip went all the way to the school campus in Columbia, S.C. The Tennessee Lady Vols associate head coach was flown there Friday morning to speak with school officials and toured the facilities before returning in the afternoon.
Warlick interviewed with a school official at an off-campus location last Friday.
Warlick, who couldn’t be reached for comment Friday, is being considered to replace Susan Walvius, who resigned last month under pressure.
Temple coach Dawn Staley also interviewed in Columbia this week.
Staley received a six-year contract extension at Temple last season that reportedly includes a sizeable buyout.
The pact is believed to be worth about $400,000 per year, which would be double the size of Walvius’ yearly salary.
Chattanooga coach Wes Moore also is believed to be under consideration. Moore, the former Maryville College coach, has led the Lady Mocs to seven Southern Conference championships in the past eight years.
North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell, who also interviewed for the job, withdrew from consideration Thursday.
Replacing Caldwell: Former Tennessee Lady Vol Daedra Charles Furlow interviewed this week for the assistant coaching vacancy at UT and is the leading candidate to replace Nikki Caldwell, who left the Tennessee staff in April to become head coach at UCLA.
Charles, a former Wade Trophy winner, is an assistant on Auburn’s staff.
Harston Hired: Former Texas assistant coach Kathy Harston has been hired as the Basketball Operations Director for the Lady Vols. Harston replaces Danielle Donehew, who left earlier this month to become the Chief Operating Officer of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream.
Harston was an assistant for 18 years on the staff of former Longhorns coach Jody Condradt.
When Conradt retired after the 2006-07 season, Harston became an academic counselor in the Texas athletics department.
“Although I enjoyed that experience, being away from the game of basketball this year after 21 seasons as a college assistant coach showed me how much I missed it,’’ Harston said. “I wanted to return to the game and I examined some opportunities to get back into collegiate basketball. The opportunity at Tennessee is an amazing one.”
Jennings Honored: Debby Jennings, the Lady Vols’ Associate Athletic Director for media relations, has been named the Arch Ward Award winner by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
She is only the second woman to receive the award, which was initiated in 1958 to honor an outstanding contribution to the field of college sports information.

Daedra Charles would be good what about Jolly?

Kelly Jolly's (Harper)next stop will probably be a head coach position at a larger school. Larger than Western Carolina.

WHY would ANYONE want to go to S. Carolina??? In their entire history they have yet to have a head coach in football, mens b-ball, or girls b-ball leave and be a head coach anywhere else. It is a GRAVEYARD OF COACHES!!!

Holly, Columbia is hot, it smells in the summer, the campus looks like it was planned as well as a second grade science fair. You can do better.

Does she have a husband that works in K'ville? What about her kids (does she have any) that may be in youth or school sports. Seems like that would have to be considered.

While I hope Holly is still here for next season, I think she would be a really good head coach for S.C.

I am sort of in shock over this. I have thought for a number of years that Holly would replace Pat if and when she ever stepped down. She is the ulimate Lady Vol in my mind since she was home grown here in Knoxville; she grew up in Bearden. I still remember Missy Cochran and Holly battling for the top spot in the Girl's KIL. Both were amazing players in high school. Good Luck, Holly, if SC is what you want to do then I hope you get it.

superk,
You must not know much about Lady Vol basketball. Holly is single, has never been married, no kids but several dogs. She grew up in the Knoxville area and was Pat's first All-American at point guard.
Honestly, I can't figure why she would really consider SC. As GreerVol22 stated, it is a graveyard for coaches and players. Look what happened to Teresa Geter when she went back home to SC. Does anyone know what she is doing now??
Holly, we love you and want you to stay. However, if you leave, PLEASE go to a better place than SC!!!!!!!!
Go Lady Vols!! Get #9 in '09!!!!!

Oh Holly. Please don't leave us, Pat ain't getting any younger. :) Seriously, we'll be proud of you no matter what you choose to do, but we certainly don't want to see you go.

I agree AllLadyVol and Holly you can do alot better than south carolina.

Deadre Charles...sounds like a good potential hire....especially if she can teach rebounding as well as she practiced the art....as I recall, if it was close, she came down with it.

Kelly Jolly would be an excellent replacement. She's all Vol!!!!

w, it is very unlikely that Kelly would be interested in stepping down. She is a head coach now and I suspect she will move up in status to one of the elite programs since she has had a winning record at Western Carolina. She might be a candidate to replace Pat when the time comes. I thought Holly would stay put and slide right into that job of Lady Vols' Head Coach.
Is this not recruiting season? Who's out snagging our next class of All-Americans while all this transition is taking place? Help!
I just want to log in one day soon and see that all our pieces are in place to have another banner hoop season. In the meantime I want to keep up with our WNBA rookies kickin' butt in the pros.

Warlick should be coming back someday as UTLVHC.
Shoes fit.

98reax,
Where will Pat put them? She will only have 1-2 scholarships available!
Remember, this fall we have 7 freshmen, 4 sophs, & 1 senior. The '09 class will be small, one or two. Pat will probably only have one or two in '10 as well. The '11 class will be tricky!
That is why she really doesn't like to have some many recruits in one year. However, I'm sure that Pat will handle the situation well.
Go Lady Vols!!! Get #9 in '09!!! Believe!!!

Sweet! I still think that Carolyn Peck would be the best replacement but how cool would it be to have The Night Train pulling back into Knoxville!!!
Only Holly (22), Daedra (32), Bridgette (30), Mique (23) and Catch (24) have their numbers retired and hanging in TBA! There will be a #3 up there pretty soon though.
As a former Olympian, US Olympic Festival Team member, USA National Team member, 2 time Kodak All-American, 2 time National Champion, Naismith All-American, Wade Trophy winner, NCAA Final Four Team, NCAA All-Regional Team, First Team All-SEC, SEC Tourney MVP, SEC Female Athlete of the Year, member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame and member of the ESPN Players of the Decade her player resume speaks volumes!
Her coaching resume is short: assistant high school coach at her alma mater in Detroit, assistant coach at the University of Detroit Mercy for three years and the last two years as an assistant at Auburn.
With the recent hire of Mark Simons, it looks like Daedra got passed over and may possibly have been on the way out. Fortner's loss will be our gain

ONE word, tenn32rebel, ATTRITION. Stuff happens. The cream rises to the top. Some injuries occur. Some get their feelings hurt, then transfer. Some keep the bench warm. Just maybe, a superstar or two will come out of it. Who knows? Yes Believe!
