Holly Warlick went for a second interview Friday with South Carolina about its women’s basketball head coaching vacancy.
This time the trip went all the way to the school campus in Columbia, S.C. The Tennessee Lady Vols associate head coach was flown there Friday morning to speak with school officials and toured the facilities before returning in the afternoon.
Warlick interviewed with a school official at an off-campus location last Friday.
Warlick, who couldn’t be reached for comment Friday, is being considered to replace Susan Walvius, who resigned last month under pressure.
Temple coach Dawn Staley also interviewed in Columbia this week.
Staley received a six-year contract extension at Temple last season that reportedly includes a sizeable buyout.
The pact is believed to be worth about $400,000 per year, which would be double the size of Walvius’ yearly salary.
Chattanooga coach Wes Moore also is believed to be under consideration. Moore, the former Maryville College coach, has led the Lady Mocs to seven Southern Conference championships in the past eight years.
North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell, who also interviewed for the job, withdrew from consideration Thursday.
Replacing Caldwell: Former Tennessee Lady Vol Daedra Charles Furlow interviewed this week for the assistant coaching vacancy at UT and is the leading candidate to replace Nikki Caldwell, who left the Tennessee staff in April to become head coach at UCLA.
Charles, a former Wade Trophy winner, is an assistant on Auburn’s staff.
Harston Hired: Former Texas assistant coach Kathy Harston has been hired as the Basketball Operations Director for the Lady Vols. Harston replaces Danielle Donehew, who left earlier this month to become the Chief Operating Officer of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream.
Harston was an assistant for 18 years on the staff of former Longhorns coach Jody Condradt.
When Conradt retired after the 2006-07 season, Harston became an academic counselor in the Texas athletics department.
“Although I enjoyed that experience, being away from the game of basketball this year after 21 seasons as a college assistant coach showed me how much I missed it,’’ Harston said. “I wanted to return to the game and I examined some opportunities to get back into collegiate basketball. The opportunity at Tennessee is an amazing one.”
Jennings Honored: Debby Jennings, the Lady Vols’ Associate Athletic Director for media relations, has been named the Arch Ward Award winner by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
She is only the second woman to receive the award, which was initiated in 1958 to honor an outstanding contribution to the field of college sports information.
