NEW YORK - David Cutcliffe knows the primary rap on his most recent pupil. There was a palpable harrumph in his voice when he addressed it.
"As a football coach, I'll tell you he has plenty of arm to play in that league. Plenty of arm," Cutcliffe said of Tennessee's Erik Ainge, the New York Jets' fifth-round draft choice, during an interview with Newsday.
Cutcliffe has some experience in evaluating and mentoring successful quarterbacks. A pair of his students won the last two Super Bowls: Peyton and Eli Manning.
"He (Ainge) was very gifted," said Duke coach Cutcliffe, who served as Tennessee's offensive coordinator when Peyton played in Knoxville and was Eli's head coach at Ole Miss. "I've been around a lot of gifted quarterbacks and he's very gifted as well. I wish I would have had him four years instead of two."
Ainge is happy about the two years he got, crediting much of his development to Cutcliffe. The 6-5 Ainge started his entire freshman season, then shared time with Rick Clausen during a disappointing sophomore season. Ainge was named the starter before his junior year, which coincided with Cutcliffe's arrival on campus.
Ainge remembered how Cutcliffe taught the new offense. "All we watched were '03 Ole Miss cuts from Eli's senior year," Ainge said Saturday. "That was easy for me because I could get the play, watch the coverage, watch Eli, and Eli threw it to the right guy almost every single time. So it was really easy for me picking it up watching his tape."
Ainge also remembered talking to Peyton Manning to get the lowdown on Cutcliffe.
"Peyton gave some good advice right when coach Cut got there. He said, 'Hey, whatever he says, shut up and do it and everything will work out,' " Ainge said with a laugh. "There's going to be times where you hate him, times where you love him, but he knows what he's doing, so just tuck your tail and do what you need to do."
Ainge did. In 2006, his first season under Cutcliffe, his completion percentage rose to .670 from .455, his QB rating jumped to 151.95 from 89.94 and his touchdown passes went to 19 from five.
Ainge followed that with one of college football's more underrated seasons in 2007, throwing for 3,522 yards with 31 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions. Two of those picks, including one returned for the go-ahead score, came in the fourth quarter of Tennessee's 21-14 loss to eventual national champion LSU in the SEC championship game.
Cutcliffe said Ainge showed his mental toughness - which also has been questioned by scouts - by driving the Vols back down the field after that final interception and putting them in position to score. "That's an indicator of being not only tough but mentally tough," Cutcliffe said.
Cutcliffe said the most important development he saw in Ainge the last two years was the quarterback's ability to take everything in.
"When you look at Peyton or Eli or any of the good quarterbacks, they see the field well," Cutcliffe said. "They see things at a speed not all of us can see at. Erik is just now learning to use that and will continue to learn that."
And if Ainge makes the unlikely - though not unprecedented - leap from late-round pick to having a solid NFL career, most of the plaudits will go to Cutcliffe.
"One thing that helps me out from coach Cut in getting to the next level is he's coached those other guys and they played early," Ainge said. "I'm not saying anything about myself comparing to those guys ... it's just he knows how to get quarterbacks ready to play football and so that's really helped me out. He changed how I play the game."

Ainge got better and better at UT. Very smart guy who occasionally made a very bad mistake. Am I the only one who thinks he has a lot of talent? Or who thinks he has a good chance of success in the NFL?

If he had that good an arm, why the chuck & duck offense? Injured you say? Then why was he in the games? Crompton that bad? Hmm?

His chances depend on NYJets giving him chances. If he was truly injured all last season by summer he should be back in 2006 form with 2007's experience to work with.

I think Ainge was one of the "steals" in the 08 draft. Good luck to him, I'll bet he has a long pro career.

Not a "mullet," not a "redneck," just a misplaced Knoxvillian here in Louisiana.
Ainge has all the tools, but I don't think he has the stuff between the ears like Peyton. Then again, neither did Eli until December 2007. I think Ainge is seeing some significant playing time by the end of the year, but he may suffre the same fate as Eli did for a while and Pennington has - New York is relentless on QB's.
Best of luck EA.

That's funny.I sure as hell am not going to miss those long screen passes down field. If Crompton was indeed not good enough to start last year over an injured Ainge we in are in for a long season.eVOLution I thought we were known as wide receiver U?Blaming the receivers is a cop out.

Some of the throws Ainge made his freshman year were incredible, after that he either couldn't or didn't get a chance to display his arm strength.
Tommyjack, the Crompton part of your line of questions is a good one despite what some of the mental giants of the board think. I'd speculate that Crompton and Cut didn't see eye to eye, especially given all the hype Coleman was getting while Cut was still around. It ticked me off reading that article around the time of the bowl game when Cut admitted that he pared the playbook back to hide Ainge's injuries. Not a coach but I always thought it was a good idea to put your most capable players on the field.

Ainge reminds me a little of Clausen. Just in that he would make impeccable decisions for 40 to 50 passes in a row, but got remembered for the bad ones. We'll see if Ainge can create the career that didn't materialize for Clausen. I think Ainge may have the better attitude of the two.

I took the time to look back at some 2006 games, and did notice he made a-lot of throws he didn't hardly attempt last yr.He also looked to have more zip in 06'.I don't ever remember anyone even questioning his arm strength untill this yr.I think the injuries did hurt him.
Should Crompton have played?Don't know, but he has admitted himself that he had to rethink his attitude, approach ,and dedication to film study.I think he was flat out unprepared and Cut knew it.When Crompton has played you could tell it was mostly adlib.
It is all a matter of opinion, but I think we should all wish him success.

Objectivity:
Uninfluenced by emotions or personal prejudices.
Undistorted by emotion or personal bias; based on observable phenomena.
If you use Logic/common sense/objectivity on here you are usually considered a loser/hater.This has become more like a political arena.Even when people on here agree w/ something someone else said, they will still say their wrong and start name calling simply b/c they are on different sides of the aisle.See dems & republicans.
No matter who post something ,I try to take into consideration the facts laid before me, and factor it in to my decision making.Ohh well, I guess some are set in their ways.
Have a good one folks.Keep it above the belt.

Vol_in_: I have, many times. I said the SEC CG was one of the best efforts I had ever seen. I think hiring The Claw was brilliant (hope I'm right)..I just feel that many of our fans are too complacent and willing to accept middle or slightly upper middle status. That's troubling to me.
Posted by vol_in_lsu_land on May 4, 2008 at 6:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)
TJ, actually you are one of the rare ones that I do recollect a few positives from.
I don't think anyone is willing to settle for middle or upper middle status. I think the conflict is in exactly what that "is". I also think there is disagreement on the capability of Fulmer in getting us there. Sooner or later, the chemistry will be there for a championship. As many seasons as we've had without one, the "later" should be closer than anyone thinks. I watch a lot of football. I have seen coaches like Tressel and Meyer and Carrol call dumb plays. I've seen them throw big games. Carrol is the most fortunate in that he coaches in a conference where there is little competition (smells of FSU in the late 80's/90's)...We have the talent, we have a proven coach who can win consistantly. All it takes is for the stars to align now and then and win all the big ones. This may be or 2009 may be that season. I'm really feeling good about it. Only problem with this year is the competition (UGA, UF) seems just as capable. Will probably be close to the three way mess like last year, but if we come out on top, I can see us "backing in" to the NC game just like LSU did.

slidin' in late on this but I'm in TJ's court on this one. Crompton is a gun slinger that thinks he is half Tebow and half Peyton, but executes kinda like a Clausen. We can only hope an injured Ainge was still better at what Coach Cut wanted to run as I'm sure he felt Crompton would try to run given the opportunity. And we all know about the running struggles we've had.

ainge will be cut before the start of the nfl season.... just kidding...
i have no idea if he will make it in the pros or not but he didn't do anything special at UT and that's all i really care about... how many championships did he bring UT....zero so move on and now its crompton's time to try and do it... i care that they played for us and have a successful life but the reason they are at UT is to win championships and the QB is critical to acheive that goal and from that perspective ainge was an average at best sec qb... nothing more...

It is true that Ainge threw a lot of short passes to pick up the first down, but he was doing exactly what Cutcliffe told him to. I also saw Ainge throw a lot of very long bullet passes for significant gains down the field. On several occasions, he threw touchdown bombs on the very first play of the game. Also, keep in mind he had a broken pinkie finger which was taped to the ring finger, which must have adversely affected his ability to throw long balls consistently. Crompton was not ready to play at that time. If Cutcliffe, the man who coached both Mannings, says he has true NFL potential, then Ainge has NFL potential.

My theory on the Ainge/Crompton debate of 07...
Before the season, Ainge was viewed by several NFL scout types (Mayock, Landry, ect) as a solid NFL prospect in the 3rd round territory.
If Ainge was in any way, shape or form able to play, there was no way Cut or Fulmer were going to put him on the bench, even if Crompton may have been the better choice. Missing any games is a huge negative in the eyes of NFL front offices.
It was no secret we went after some big time QB's this recruiting season, and trying to pad the stats and draft stock of Ainge carried double incentive.
The desire to have Ainge in the 65% completion rate range, coupled with a lack of field-stretching WR led to the 5 yard slant, curl, out and dig. Here's hoping we see some "juice" this year!!!!!!!

Who does Cutcliff have on his resume besides the Manning brothers? Has Cutcliif worked on an NFL staff in any position to do with QBs? As someone queried the other day, did Cutcliff "make" the Mannings or did the Mannings "make" Cutcliff? Just curious.

Do you monkeys have your "own" opinions or do you just wait to hear someone you like tell you what to think? Most of your posts consist of throwing players and coaches under the bus! Show some integrity as Tennessee football fans. Stand behind the UT program instead of posting such negative garbage so consistently. Gerry, many give Cut credit for Shuler as well. That Shuler didn't make it in the NFL may have been more Norv Turner's fault than Cut's. Cut should also take all credit for Tee Martin. Litmus test would have been how Jerry Colquitt turned out if not for blowing out his knee in his first game.

Don't forget that Cutcliffe worked extensively with Andy Kelly. While Kelly lacked NFL arm strength his stats in arena football show that Cutcliffe certainly did not hurt him.
Ainge has the intelligence and arm to make it in the NFL. The question is can he take the punishment the NFL dishes out.
His toughness has been questioned but he showed by playing with a broken finger and sprained A/C joint in his shoulder he is tough.
If he can take the hits without being oft-injured he could have a great career.

Thanks SavageO, I like to think I am one of the more objective folk on here as well and agree with the political analogy.
Vol_in_LSU, if you want to see some positive posts, check out the number of times I have defended Ainge against TJ and others or go back to most any articles post game last year(with a few exceptions) and I handed out plenty of praise when it was warranted. I also don't think you'll find anything remotely negative from me regarding the Clawson hire, the only candidate I wasn't impressed with was DeBord from MI.
I am not looking for justification or anything, simply bringing it up to point out that there are still some folk on here who can find the middle ground. Unfortunately, those numbers have dwindled, much like the political landscape, with the far left and the far right getting most of the airplay on here.

With the acrid comments thru the doldrums, we have the potential to reach a new high, if, heavens forbid, Rick N. turns out to be an unhospitable host. GVX will become GVroiling.
Fritters will be thrown.

PD: If Rick whoops us, look out.
Yeah, we're in little ol' house right between Oak Park and Roosevelt. Small (but paid for!)
Fairly warm here.
Were you ever been served by our ex-bartender in Johnson City?

I think Ainge will be a starter in his 2nd year w/ the Jets. Whether you liked the move or not to play him hurt, it still showed some toughness and resolve. If anything, he will become a better QB having played through that experience.
I know I contribute to the back and forth arguments and all I have to say about that topic is that there is a difference between objectivity and constant negativity. There are some posters on here that aren't going to let any thread move in a positive direction regardless of the topic, and I will continue to argue with those posters and make them look stupid every chance I get.

Ainge will not make the Jets because he has no mobility. I hope I am wrong (often am) but in the NFL throwing flares when there is a rush just won't get it done.

Ainge has about as much mobility as the Manning Bros. They seem to be doing alright.

"bowerst...1997 SEC champs
Peyton said..."Tennessee...SEC champs, sounds good to me".
Holla."
Does this one count? We backed into the title game, correct? Lost to Florida. Needed LSU and GA to beat them.

Ainge was thrown into the fire as a skinny freshman, before he had the chance to build himself up in the weight room. Then he got hurt and lost another year in the weight room. Plus it affected his mental approach. If he puts more muscle on and hangs onto a roster spot for a couple years before he gets thrown into the NFL fire, he might make a good QB someday.

does it matter if we backed in or not? just curious

Jimr: It matters if that's your sole criterion for assessing the season.

When you win it, it counts. See the bling, bling. You get zilch for winning a division title from the SEC office. You do get a trophy when you win finish first. Enjoy your Outhouse Bowl t-shirt.

jimr07, I was using workin logic. Quite a bit of sarcasm in my post.

Peyton didnt have mobility to an extent... Ainge is fine
Posted by WorkinLikeHeck on May 5, 2008 at 5:14 p.m. (Suggest removal)
yeah, Peyton wouldn't get sprained ankles on designed QB draws/runs. He would get TDs.

auttat "logic" = trying to compare an actual SEC title (i realize you may have forgotten what those were since it's been awhile) to winning the SEC East and not winning the SEC title. At least we won the Outhouse Bowl by God!!!!!!

My take.....(for what its worth) is that we didnt have the receivers in last year as we did in the past....therefore the duck and chuck...or dink and dunk...came into play alot more....In the pros...hes gonna have plenty of talent to show that arm strength ...and not be so nervous that if he does throw ..that they wont be able to come down with it...Hes a big kid....smart...and knows how to play....I think he will do tremendously in the pros....hes gonna have a supporting cast around him like none hes ever seen....GO VOLSSSSSSSSSsss

I was replying to a post by grvol that said "no championships, already forgotten", referring to Ainge. I pointed out that it was Tee Martin who led UT to the 'ultimate' championship, and I would hate to think any Vol fan would forget Manning -- I know full well that we won an SEC title with Manning in 1997.
I think it is the defense, the skill players and mainly the lines of scrimmage that determines who wins most championships, but even if I could, I wouldn't trade the privilege of watching Peyton Manning play QB at UT for another national title.
Ainge did not have the teammates Manning or Martin had, and he suffered a very unfortunate injury as a freshman that set his career back tremendously.

Rock the boat? I prefer to tip it over and watch the sheep scurry around and convince themselves everything is okay. This board is basically my own personal playground.

If I screwed that up, just hit youtube/boat accidents.
Man, that is breath-taking. Kinda like I'll be Sept 1st, watching Phil's charges mop up a QB-less UCLA (per some posters).
Hope Dupree's ok at Halls.

He shined in his first few games then slowly regressed under Sanders. His arm went untested under both Sanders and Cut with their dink and dunk garbage. A Fulmer pet at left tackle got his throwing shoulder crushed and injured his freshman year. I wish Ainge the best and maybe in the future Fulmer, Sanders and Cut will be questioned about their time with him.

Just a little info from the Jets camp if anybody would care to hear it. Heard Jimmy Sexton (agent for most SEC coaches) this morning in an interview. He said the Jets were very impressed with Ainge in his first rookie workout. So much so that they have already paid for surgery to fix his little finger. (Surgery done over this past weekend and he'll be out for about 2 months recovering.) Sexton said the Jets only have 3 QB's under contract (including Ainge) and, barring another signing, he'll make the team. (And there are lots of questions about Pennington's status at #2.)
As far as his little finger goes, Sexton said that it was badly injured before the Cal game last year. Basically he said that, prior to the surgery, it was going in about 3 different directions. If so, I can imagine it affected his throwing and that's why the Jets want it corrected now.
As to why he was playing instead of Crompton, I guess the coaches thought a 70% Ainge was better than a 100% Crompton. Hard to say.
