SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Former University of Tennessee running back Onterrio Smith was arrested early Friday on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said.
The 27-year-old Smith was arrested at Morrison Avenue and Disk Drive in Del Paso Heights, said Sacramento Police Sgt. Matt Young. Smith was booked into Sacramento County jail just after 4 a.m., jail records show.
Smith also is facing an arrest warrant for allegedly driving with a suspended license and other traffic infractions, according to jail records. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
A former running back for the Minnesota Vikings, Smith has been out of football since 2004. He is considered one of the Sacramento region's greatest high school football players, but a long list of disciplinary actions cost him his professional career.
Smith was suspended for the entire 2005 season and later cut by the Vikings after two seasons. In May of that year, he was detained at the Minneapolis airport for carrying "the Original Whizzinator," a device designed to beat urine drug tests.
Smith violated the NFL's anti-drug policy three times and was denied reinstatement to the league in 2006 for failing to comply with mandated drug counseling. That same year, he was cut by Winnipeg of the Canadian Football League.
Smith started his college career at Tennessee but left after he tested positive for marijuana and was suspended.
Smith transferred to Oregon, where he amassed 2,199 yards and 19 touchdowns in two seasons with the Ducks. He was drafted by the Vikings in 2003 and deemed himself "the steal of the draft." In his rookie season with the Vikings, Smith rushed for 579 yards and five touchdowns. He led the team in rushing in 2004, despite getting suspended for four games.
In a 2007 interview with The Sacramento Bee, Smith said his experiences had humbled him.
"They say you have to surrender to your problem," he said then. "For the longest time, I didn't think I had a problem, didn't believe it. But something was always getting me in these situations."

guess I have been living in a fog, I don't remember this guy, I do remember someone transferring to Oregon, just add him to the long list of potential great players who made the wrong choice in life and screwed up. And how is this Tennessee Sports News?

Just another example of the local media biting the hand that provides the only reason for their existence. Even an earthworm learns after so many repititions. These hyenas must not be so smart. I hope Hamilton is smart enough to recognize and deal with this problem. Dickey surely failed to address it. Hamilton should at least take away their pass to the FREE buffet
on game days or else bill the sentinel for their participation.

Maybe adams can get the oregon coach fired since he was involved with smith after he left knoxville. But with his obsession with Phillip, that would be too reasonable for adams to understand.

Who is this guy ? Oh yeah,he was going to be the next great running back at U.T., and he would have been. And adams said CPF gives special treatments to special players! He's kicked off better players than most schools ever had.

For someone who used a fake penis to beat a drug rap, this is nothing for him. Another in the long line of the proud Tennessee tradition of Leonard Little, Tony Robinson, James Banks, Coker, Respert, Webb, Cobb...gosh I could keep typing names all day. Yes, the T on the helmet still stands for "Thugs."

Where will this downward spiral end?
Sad.

Hiresanders, if my memory serves me correctly, Jason Respert never got into trouble at UT. He was basically framed on a recruiting visit to Florida...If you are trying to blame Robinson, Webb and Cobb on CPF, they were players when Johnny was head coach.
Yes, UT has thugs, but so does every other team. Is that an excuse for UT? No.
I agree with the other posters that Smith is old news. He is more of a never was than a has been.

Hiresanders, I met Jason Respert at the senior bowl game in Hawaii. He represented Tennessee extremely well. I am very proud he wore orange. Fulmer once said he would make O. Smith able to make a lot of money if he would stay out of trouble. He might have won the Heisman if he had stayed away from weed. He would have been on a great UT team with a great O line. How sad he didn't listen to Fulmer. By the way, all you Fulmer haters; how do all these great players Fulmer kicks off the team wind up in Louisville, Oregon, Oklahoma, etc and never get reported until they go to the NFL?

hiresanders... Interestingly enough, all of the players you listed that actually played for Fulmer were kicked off the team... I guess you and Adams still think he doesn't enforce discipline.

And he doesn't.

At least Fulmer did the right thing and dismissed O. Smith from the team, despite his huge upside potential at the time. Doesn't say a whole lot about the integrity within the U of Oregon program, because one has to certainly believe Smith continued with dope smoking habits while there simply because they continued in the NFL. He certainly didn't stop for a one or two year period while at U of Oregon.

I am waiting for the KNS to start printing articles when season ticket holders get arrested. After all, they are a part of the team about as much as this guy ever was, most of them have been with the team a lot longer.
The KNS is just looking for a negative article to print.

Hiresanders: you are dead wrong about Jason Respert. He was framed and CPF was the only one willing to give him a second chance and he had an exemplary career at UT. He never got into ANY trouble and became a team captain and leader!

I usually defend the KNS, but I'm not seeing a lot of relevance in this article.
