Sports Writers Hall of Fame to induct former News Sentinel editor Riggs

Bobby Hall, Claude "Blinkey" Horn and Ted Riggs have been elected into the Tennessee Sports Writers Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. July 10 at Cumberland University in Lebanon.

Hall worked for almost 40 years as a writer for the Commercial Appeal in Memphis. He covered everything from the University of Memphis to Ole Miss to Tennessee. He eventually specialized in golf and became one of America's top golf writers.

Hall won numerous awards for his coverage of The Masters, U.S. Open, PGA Championship and FedEx St. Jude Classic. He was known for his intense preparation and unbelievably detailed reporting. He always had the knack of finding the unusual angle.

Horn was sports editor of The Nashville Tennessean following Grantland Rice and preceding Raymond Johnson. He developed the concept of a state high school basketball tournament and prompted the newspaper to sponsor the state tournament from 1921 until 1929 when the TSSAA took over the tournament.

Horn was a charter inductee in 1966 into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. Horn died in 1937 at the age of 51.

Riggs worked for United Press International in 1952, then joined the Knoxville News Sentinel in 1953. He was in charge of high school sports from 1958 until he became assistant sports editor in 1981. He covered state basketball tournaments 1958-81, also did sidebars on Tennessee home games, covered state track meets all over the state. In 1964 he was named Tennessee Sportswriter of the Year.

Riggs died in 1992 at the age of 62.

With the addition of Hall, Horn and Riggs to the previous two classes, the TSWA Hall of Fame will grow to 29 members.

The induction ceremony is held in conjunction with TSWA's annual convention July 9-11.
