Temple coach Dawn Staley is emerging as the front-runner to fill the women’s basketball head coaching vacancy at South Carolina.
Sources in Philadelphia said talks have heated up between Staley and the Gamecocks. Staley, a three-time Olympic gold medalist and former All-American point guard at Virginia, interviewed in Columbia, S.C., last week. She has been Temple’s head coach for eight years, leading the Owls to the NCAA tournament six times.
Tennessee associate head coach Holly Warlick has interviewed twice for the South Carolina job, which became available when Susan Walvius resigned under pressure last month. Warlick went to Columbia last Friday and toured the facilities.
The crucial variable in the talks with Staley figures to be money. Staley’s guaranteed financial package at Temple is believed to be $400,000, which is double the amount Walvius made at South Carolina. Furthermore, Staley’s six-year contract is believed to have a substantial buyout.
Along with coaching at Temple, Staley is an assistant coach with the U.S. women’s national team.
Tennessee has to fill one assistant’s spot after Nikki Caldwell left last month to become the head coach at UCLA. Former Lady Vol Daedra Charles Furlow has interviewed for the opening and is expected to be named as Caldwell’s replacement.
Butts Cut: Former Tennessee Lady Vol Tasha Butts has been waived by the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream.
The Dream waived former Lady Vols guard Brittany Jackson on Sunday.
Butts is an assistant coach at Duquesne.

Holly will hold out for the top job at UT. There's none better to fill that position when Pat hangs up her whistle for the last time.
It will be great to have Dawn Staley in the SEC. She'll bring some fire to the SC program which has been sluggish and slow ever since Shannon (Pee Wee) Johnson graduated. They took us to overtime that season ('96). Nancy Wilson was the coach then. They had a little guard , Nikki Miars that could shoot lights out from anywhere on the court. I digress.
It would be nice to see SC become more competitive. Dawn Staley would get some fine recruits, I suspect. I know she can coach.
Bottom line: I just don't want to lose Holly.

I'm thinking that's a very long, skinny limb you are climbing out on to guarantee 10 more years for Pat Summitt at the head coaching position at Tennessee. I have no guarantees to offer, but I dare say Pat will not desire to coach even 5 years from now. I simply have an opinion. That is that after pat reaches the 1000 win pinnacle; perhaps another year or two to reach 10 championships, she will step down. Especially if she has to endure the continuing aggravation from the doubters and accusers who insist on mouthing incessantly.
Yes, I know Pat is tough as nails, but as she has stated numerous times "when the game is no longer fun, I will know it is time to leave." All you 55+ women out there may understand why this may be sooner than later.

It will be interesting to see who ends up on top in this one.

Don't forget Shelly Collier as a possible replacement for Coach Summitt when she gets ready to retire. Shelly is made of the same cloth as Coach Summitt.

There will be plenty of possibilities when Coach Summitt decides to call it quits. But that time isn't here yet.
Don't worry, this woman who has done so much for womens basketball and for UT will not just walk off the court (her court !) one day and say, "I quit". She will play a large part in choosing her replacement...........thank goodness.
As one of those 55+ women, I hope that day doesn't come soon. I want to see her set records that will never be broken and cause problems finding enough room for banners in the rafters of TBA. I dearly hope Holly is right beside her while this is happening. Best of luck to both of them ! We Lady Vol basketball fans have been truly blessed.

It's all about having the right kind of kids to work with in order to make the game fun. If Pat continues to recruit the type of young lady she has in the past I would think she will stay in coaching a long time. She has proven skills in this area or you would not see 8 banners hanging from TBA.
I don't know how Pat and Michelle Marciniak would fit together but I sure would like to see her passion for the game on Pat's sideline. I remember the two of them had a few conflicts when Michelle played here years ago but she sure had a fire in her belly.

I have no idea "when"......Pat will hang it up but i feel it wont be before the next 6 years. i think she has a real chance at getting 10 Championships but you never know since we went an unbelievable 9 years between #6 and #7.....whoda thunk it?
But i like Pats chances!!!
It will never be admitted by her but she will now be driven subconsciously by Geno.....for he would probably start to rule the spotlight with Pat gone.........a thought so horrible that no one in vols land could bear. Pat is the epitomy of womens basketball!!!
May Pat coach until she is 70!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!++

The smart thing for Holly to do is take the girls place at Temple, win there, and wait on Pat's job.

Which is it?
Frontrunner!! Or out of reach! Then the article reveals she's now making twice what SC pays and I don't see them ponying up for Ladies BBall plus a big buy-out. Who writes these headlines?
