GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A Florida football player was kicked off the team Friday after turning himself in on charges he used the gas credit card of a woman who was killed along with another player in a motorcycle accident.
Jamar Hornsby, a 21-year-old junior safety, learned Thursday that a judge had issued a warrant for his arrest on charges he used the dead woman's gas card for six months, so he surrendered on charges of credit card theft and fraudulent use of a credit card, lawyer Huntley Johnson said.
Hornsby was released from jail several hours later on his own recognizance.
It was not immediately clear how Hornsby got the card. Johnson declined to comment on the specifics of the case, but said they would cooperate with authorities.
The credit card belonged to Ashley Slonina, a Florida junior. She was riding a motorcycle with another football player, redshirt freshman Michael Guilford, last October that hit a median at a high rate of speed, police said. The two died at the scene. They were not wearing helmets.
Hornsby started using the gas card the day after Slonina died. The card was used 33 times in Alachua County and another 37 times in Jacksonville, where Hornsby is from. The total amount was $3,000, said Alachua County Sheriff's Office spokesman Stephen Maynard.
"I would love to hear the explanation for utilizing the card of a deceased person," Maynard said.
The sheriff's office will continue to investigate and forward their findings to the State Attorney's Office, Maynard said.
Florida coach Urban Meyer said in a statement that Hornsby "is not part of our program."
Hornsby missed five games last season after being suspended for selling free football tickets he received as a student. He was also arrested in April 2007 after a fight in Gainesville, but his lawyer said those charges were dropped.
State prosecutors did not return phone messages or e-mails seeking comment.

Seriously, do some of these guys just take too many blows to the head? Practice without helmets???
Who, in their right mind, would ever think at any point using a dead persons credit card would be a good idea???
Amazing how fast some guys will throw away a free ride in college, isn't it?

Maybe if these guys (athletes) were charged on their first offense rather than having charges dropped, they would learn an early lesson and get their heads on straight. Dropping of charges promotes an attitude that they can be law breakers and not have any consequences for their actions. I agree with Andy112382...can you spell "STUPID"??????

What Hornsby did was, quite obviously, socially unacceptable. It was also amazingly stupid considering he is/was attending college. How could he not have known that they would eventually catch him? His actions were as mindless as a crackhead.
Any chance Tebow was involved? Maybe Harvin, too! ;-)

What's the purpose of those rules? To protect the students/athletes from being hounded constantly by overzealous coaches?
How about instead of the NCAA being mommy and daddy to these kids they let the kids and their real mommies and daddies decide when they can be contacted.

High crimes and misdemeanors, Mr. McBrim. For both gentlemen, there is that line. Though we don't have 16 years of experience with Mr. Meyer to flesh out a true trend.

mcbrim1998.....
I would guess that Urban's line for kicking someone off the team would be similar to Phil's...
LaMarcus Coker was kicked off after several failed drug tests, no one hurt there but him...He was a scholarship player, highly recruited.
Jamar Hornsby was kicked off the team...
1)After being suspended for selling his student tix.
2)After being arrested following a fight (charges were dropped...that rarely happens huh?)
3)After using the credit card of a teammates dead girlfriend over 70 times
4)Hornsby was a walk on player.
There is not a division I program that is completely clean, and to expect coaches to be omnipotent and regulate all player movement is insane...I only mention this to illustrate that most schools have VERY similar policies regarding player dismissals, and I'd reckon that the decision to boot him was made easier by his absence on the gator 3-deep chart

This award goes to the individual who contributes the most points to his team during the season, OR has the most incredible incident that resulted in Fulmer Cup points. Named after Ellis T. Jones III, the greatest collegiate criminal ever.
Ellis T. Jones III Award Winners:
2007: Ronnie M. Wilson of Florida, for firing off a semi-automatic rifle during a road rage incident.
2006: Ellis T. Jones himself, for 13 felony counts stemming from using Craigslist to meet robbery targets.
Did you see this portion of your cute little site????
I nominate LaMarcus Coker for the Marcus Thomas Award, named for the U of FLA defensive tackle who was tossed from the team for repeated failed drug tests.....
But I do see you working...you'll see our failed drug tests and raise us credit card fraud/use of a firearm during road rage!!!!

45 wont be enough to win this year....hey, what did your win last year earn you guys??? Hmmm....Oh ya, a 3rd place finish in the East and a complete whoopin in your bowl by the 3rd or 4th best team in the Big 10...let that soak in for a sec, the Big 10...
Peyton is that one guy on t.v, not the one doing the bachelor reality show, the one winning super bowls, super bowl mvp awards and NFL Offensive MVP awards, that Peyton.

19-18 Vols in the overall series...Kinda makes always have, always will sound inaccurate huh?
Please show me where in my post I made an excuse for last year? I was suggesting the game was closer than the score for 3 quarters.
I suppose that is the fundamental difference between Vols and gators...gators look for excuses (read any fla site following the citrus bowl)...gators also base athletic success soley on their exploits in college, because that is the only place they have success, while VOLS base the success on a number of criteria, namely representation of the university and professional success
Bottom line....
Its great, to be, a TENNESSEE VOL!!!!!

McBrim, the laps thingy were a one and done deal. Half hearted. Theft seems to be a big deal to Phil that he quickly punches tickets for that type of transgression. Drugs and academics are more of a once, twice and thrice and we're starting to think about getting serious. But those things are also regulated by University and NCAA policy. Don't misunderstand, I am not proud of some actions that Phil has failed to administer to wayward athletes in desperate need of being shown the door, especially a jail cell door.
BTW, Gucking was civil up until his 7:50 post. You, however, have always been snide and smirky and holier-than-thou which some would classify as down right rude.

Adams: Gator football needs a change at the top.

I couldn't find London on a map if they didn't have the names of the countries, I swear to God. I don't know what nothing is. I know Italy looks like a boot. I learned that.
"I know (Washington Redskins linebacker) London Fletcher. We did a football camp together. So I know him. That's the closest thing I know to London. He's black, so I'm sure he's not from London. I'm sure that's a coincidental name."
I'll take a punter in his 20's w/ a drinking problem, that can be fixed....
Momma always said you cant fix stupid. We'll send our punter to AA if you send your LB's to study hall...guess you dont have to pass the FCAT to enroll at UF?
Did you look up the positions of Tebow and Harvin yet? Tebow plays shortstop and Harvin is a solid 6th man. Do your homework

mcbrim, only someone with the IQ of a dead plant would come on a site that promotes news about their team's biggest rival, and after one of the most disgusting non-violent acts/crimes anyone can imagine, start throwing rocks.
I understand you love stirring the pot and causing trouble to get a rise out of people, but your act is about as stale as two-month old bread.
I live in Florida, grew up in Florida, but attended UT. Many of my high school classmates and teammates attended Florida and are a credit to the university. I don't know 99gator, but he understands when he comes onto a site promoting UT, he's coming into our backyard and he shows some respect to a program that has still won way more than Florida.
I refuse to sink to the level of some of my fellow UT fans and throw stones at Gator players that have exhibited class and dignity.
However, the Fulmer Cup is like any other subjective award/dishonor and its creator and administrator can make it work however they choose.
Phillip Fulmer is an icon in the SEC. Him and Steve Spurrier are the last two links to the legendary coaches of the past in the SEC such as Bear Bryant, Shug Jordan and Vince Dooley.
For you to say that Florida has always owned UT in football his hilarious. The Gators didn't win a SEC title until the 1990s after Spurrier arrived as the head coach. Don't mistake a good 15-year run for the history of the SEC.
As I stated earlier, UT has still won more conference titles and games than Florida. And it will be a long time before the Gators catch up in either of those categories.
Most of your arguments show the same intelligence of the Florida sports information department when it put a crocidile on the front of the football media guide a few years ago.
I'm just glad I'm fortunate to know some nice Gators because it's guys like you that give Florida fans a bad name.

nicksjuzunk.
Hey Bro'. Hope all is well. My Brother said he didn't have any effects from the cyclone, but many of his people were up there. About the question you pose...No. I don't believe Fulmer or anyone else should use anything that stretches the truth of intent of a rule or regulation. Without going into a dissertation on the state of moral decay in our Country, when folks start pushing the envelope and truth is replace by assumption and pack mentality, the only thing that can happen is that things decay. The NCAA is experiencing that now with guys like Saban who look furiously for ways to stretch the truth, get others to buy in and suddenly everyone says, "Everybody else does it so its obviously okay." Not okay. You either have moral conviction or you don't. My opinion, but I stand by it without flinching. A perfect example would be when the all the furor was raging about Tennessee players getting into trouble. So many argued til' they were blue in the face that it was "just a fact of life and everybody else does it anyway." Many here, including me said that was nonsense and it could be controlled just as it is on many other scholl campus's. Now...look at how it has stopped. Who was right and who was wrong? Making excuses and bloviating nonsense will never correct issues that need to be corrected. Action will. Somebody took action and it all stopped. My hats off to whomever that was.
tigervol9802.
Hey Bro'. Hope all is well. You can see in my reply to nicksjuzunk how I feel about all the coaches pushing the envelope. Saban just happens to be a man that I consider to be morally corrupt in many ways. Just my opinion based on many things he has done in his life and career.

Tisk, tisk, mcowned....sorry the elementary logic escaped you. We are not the ones obsessed with posting on a rival team's site. Who is owned? Thou art the owned one...the Vols are the owners.
But you come back anytime. Enjoy the glory of UT. I know you can't stay away, obsessed & owned one.
And remember, "Florida tradition - all 15 years of it."
FWBVol,
from a Florida resident and a Vol fan for decades...a big AMEN to you!

Beautiful spot. The reason I asked is that I will in Miami pretty regularly for the next few months, but Ft. Walton Beach is way too far to get together for a cup of java and talk TN football.

Sorry, girls, just got back from TPC. Oh, yea, Tebow was there too.
Fritter, are you saying a "queer" guy kicked the &*#! out of the mighty vols, TWICE?
BWAAHAAAHAAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAA
Now, with regards to Gator fans posting on this site, I know you like the kind and gentle 99gator, but I am not him. In fact, I suspect he may be a little light in the loafers.
At any rate, I know you guys want only kool-aid drinking fans here, but who else would post here if it were not people like me who post the truth.
Kindest Regards

mcbrim, so you finished picking up trash on the parking lot after the golf tournament and you got through early tonight.
You wouldn't know the truth if it knocked your teeth down your throat.
As I said, some of my best friends attended Florida, so I'm fortunate enough to know some Gator fans are first-class.

mcbrim... you are criticizing UT for giving guys too many chances? This kid was in constant trouble.
As for the "Fulmer Cup", notice it IS the invention of a couple of devoted Gator fans. It is so "objective" that a misdemeanor alcohol or pot offense gets 3 or 4 points each occasion while a double felony gets only 6 points. Seems to be designed to keep UF off the list... the only things that see that light of day in G'ville are the felonies... seldom do the drug or alcohol problems show up. Wonder why? Surely UF wouldn't have any funny business going on there would they? Maybe some "signs" that a drug test is coming so a Gator FB player can make sure he has a clean sample?
