Georgia Tech had too much talent for Tennessee Saturday afternoon.
The result was a 4-0 tennis victory by the third-ranked Yellow Jackets in the second round of the NCAA women's tournament at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta, Ga. The loss ended the No. 25 Lady Vols' season at 15-10, which tied for their most victories in the past five seasons.
"We fought about as hard as we are capable of fighting,'' UT co-head coach Mike Patrick said. "We just ran into an extremely deep and talented team in Georgia Tech."
Tennessee put up its best fight over the doubles point. Just moments after the Tech duo Christy Striplin and Kirsten Flower won their match, the Lady Vols team of Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsofia Zubor won 8-6 over Kristi Miller and Sasha Krupina.
Defending national champion Georgia Tech (21-5) earned the point when Noelle Hickey and Whitney McCray overcame a 6-1 deficit to beat the UT duo of Ghizela Schutte and Rosalia Alda, 9-7.
Whoriskey and Zubor will play in the individual portion of the NCAA championships May 21-26 in Tulsa, Okla. Whoriskey also will compete in singles.
"As tough as this loss is, it is hard not to be excited about the future of our program,'' Patrick said. "We have a lot of young talent returning next season."
Whoriskey and Zubor are sophomores. The lone departing senior is Schutte.
