Tennessee associate head coach Chris Woodruff was named Region III assistant coach of the year and J.P. Smith was named Region III rookie of the year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, according to a release from the Tennessee sports information office.
Regional award winners are finalists for the national award which will be announced on May 20.
“Chris Woodruff is certainly deserving of this award,” head coach Sam Winterbotham said in the release. “He does a great job of working with our guys and has a gift for teaching the game of tennis. His tennis expertise is second to none in college tennis.”
Woodruff came back to UT after spending 10 years on the ATP tour. In 2002, he began serving as a volunteer coach and in 2004 was promoted to assistant coach. When Winterbotham came on board in 2006, Woodruff was promoted to associate head coach. In two seasons under Winterbotham and Woodruff, Tennessee is 40-11 (.784).
Smith has a 28-9 singles record this season. Also the SEC freshman of the year, he is ranked 24th in singles. Smith teams up with Kaden Hensel to form UT’s top doubles unit. The duo went 22-5 this season and is ranked fourth in the most recent ITA doubles poll. Smith will play in the NCAA singles and doubles championships in Tulsa, Okla., after the conclusion of the NCAA team championships.

Congrats!
If you can get to the next level, the admistration will put the bucks behind you. We need tennis, track and swimming back on the front burner nationally. Thanks for moving the playing field a little bit!
