MEMPHIS - Tennessee men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl emerged from a car on Monday morning that brought him to the Germantown Country Club for a golf outing that started the annual Big Orange Caravan spring stop.
Naturally, Bruce was talking on a cell phone.
He hasn't stopped selling his program since the 31-5 Vols' Southeastern Conference championship season ended with a 79-60 loss to Louisville in the NCAA East Regional semifinals on March 27.
Since then, Pearl:
Convinced All-SEC small forward Tyler Smith to forgo the NBA draft and stay at least one more season in Knoxville.
Swayed McDonald's all-American shooting guard Scotty Hopson of Hopkinsville (Ky.) University Heights Academy to sign with the Vols instead of Mississippi State.
Persuaded junior college all-American point Bobby Maze of Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College to toss aside his early commitment to Maryland and sign with the Vols.
"We've had a lot going on, but most of it has been positive," said Pearl, who joined Vols' football coach Phillip Fulmer and women's athletic director Joan Cronan for Monday's activities that ended with a dinner and speeches at the Hilton.
The signing of Maze appears to fix a weakness that contributed to the Vols' Sweet 16 exit in March.
Pearl rolled the dice after the Vols' NCAA first-round win over American, yanking starting point guard Ramar Smith from the lineup and inserting swingman and former White Station star J.P. Prince at the point before the second-round, 76-71 overtime win over Butler. Prince averaged 5.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and five turnovers starting Tennessee's last two NCAA tourney games at the point.
"We just weren't getting good play at the point," Bruce said. "Ramar wasn't making foul shots. His assist-to-turnover ratio wasn't what it needed to be. (Backup point) Jordan (Howell) wasn't making shots.
"I thought about using J.P. at the point in the last month of the season. But at halftime at the American game, I had to make a change or we were going to get beat. Not just that game, but whoever we were going to play the next game. If we didn't make that change, we weren't going to beat Butler."
Pearl admitted that it wouldn't have mattered who played the point for the Vols against Louisville, that the Cardinals had the better team. It also made him wish he would have had one more year of eligibility for former Vols' starting small forward Dane Bradshaw.
The former Memphis White Station High School star played out his eligibility a year ago, helping advance the Vols to the Sweet 16 where they lost to eventual national runner-up Ohio State.
"If I had Dane Bradshaw for one more year, he would have played point this past season and we really could have gone and done something," Pearl said. "When he did play for us, I needed him so bad at the other positions that I couldn't keep him at the point."
When Ramar Smith (as well as forward Duke Crews) was asked to leave the team a few weeks ago because of academic problems and violation of the school's substance abuse policy, the point guard vacancy swayed Maze.
The 6-3 Maze averaged 20.7 points, 6.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game last season. He played as a freshman two years ago for Oklahoma.
"Bobby is from Maryland, and when he verbaled to Maryland during the middle of this past season, we let it go," Pearl said. "But when our season took off, Bobby opened his recruitment again. When we lost Ramar, we were able to jump in again with Bobby and get it done quickly."
Pearl said he feels that Maze will be the Vols' best point guard since C.J. Watson, who started on Pearl's first Tennessee team in 2005-06
"Bobby is going to give us a quarterback who will make everyone on the floor better," Pearl said. "He's a high-assist guy, great in the spread and great in ball screen."
Maze rounds out a five-man Vols' recruiting class that ranks with the nations's best.
Hopson, a 6-6 shooting guard, is Pearl's first McDonald's all-American signee and is rated No. 5 overall in the Class of '08 by Rivals.com. Two of the Vols' three signees are also rated in the top 70 by Rivals -- 6-8 wing Renaldo Woolridge (No. 53 by Rivals) of North Hollywood, Calif., and 6-11 Phillip Jurick of East Ridge (No. 69).
The other signee is 6-1 point guard Daniel West, who led Saginaw (Mich.) High to back-to-back state championships.
"We feel we have balance in this class," Pearl said. "But getting Tyler back was big. We want to get him in the lottery next year, so we're working really hard on all the guard skills he needs to get himself there."

CJ Watson was so quiet, unassuming (read that as not flashy) and proficient at PG that it is hard to remember his one year under CBP. Somehow I don't think Maze will be that way.

"We want to get him in the lottery next year, so we're working really hard on all the guard skills he needs to get himself there." By that quote Bruce meant that he is going to play Tyler at the shooting guard right?? I know he can't be trying to put him at the point?? Answers? Tyler has the size of a sg but so does J.P. and J.P. played the point last year. I hope Bruce isn't talking about the point for Tyler??

Skills not position...he may play some shooting guard but he's too valuable around the paint to not play the four. The best competition in the country couldn't stop him last year at the four.

Pack, I think what Pearl is talking about are things like handling the ball and working on his outside shot. Tyler will most likely remain the 4, but may also play some 3. He won't, in all likelihood, be playing shooting guard or point guard. They're just going to help him get his game more NBA ready by helping him develop that outside shot and his confidence in it. If he can take his game consistently beyond 15 feet, that will help our team tremendously because it will make him a threat from all areas of the floor and because it will open up the inside for Wayne and Brian. This is especially key since the 3 point line is moving back and defenses are more likely to sag. Being able to bring Tyler outside some will help prevent sagging man to man and zone defenses.

I just want some quotes/media coverage from my beloved Coach Foolmore. I mean he is the state's football coach of the biggest sport on campus and we can't even get a quote from him since the end of Spring practice. This probably helps with national exposure though especially considering that we have to recruit nationally since we don't have enough instate talent. There is nothing wrong with im being at the Germantown CC snack bar. I'm sure it's a great one.

Wiliams maybe the Base Line for the Vols next year, they will go as well as he goes. If he progresses well this summer he should be able to provide high impact minutes. Even if he doesn't he still gives us five more fouls at Low Post.
Chism, we love you, now take a few extra hours each day at the foul line.

As good as he is you think UT would at least hire him as a consultant.

Dorsey was riding out on the hood..making it rain. Pierre Niles reached out and slapped Fulmer and tried to kidnap him but they couldn't get him in the car. He wouldn't fit. Duke and Andre were there but they didn't even realize what was going on cause they were high. Well, that's how it was reported on the news anyway.

Just hit me....CBP is prepping HIMSELF to be an NBA coach. I think there are a few other college jobs that MIGHT tempt him, but he has great support at UT.
That leads me to think he might have a bit of a dream to go pro. You can't blame him, the money is huge, as is the stage and the talent. As a vol fan, I don't think it will happen really soon, but I can see it in 4-5 years, especially if we make it deeper into the NCAA's.

Mparker, the NBA is too cutthroat and ego driven for CBP. He has said he doesn't want to flit from job to job. Win or lose, NBA coaches never stay in the same place more than a few years.

Not really, the local Knoxville media covering Phil doesn't really do anything. Let me know when he conducts a national interview between end of spring practice and SEC media days. recruits/parents/fans outside of the Knoxville matket area hardly get any exposure to Coach Fulmer while he is in the witness protection program from end of spring tpractice to late July.

Relax workin'. Your football coach was on all the TV stations with interviews yesterday and seemed to be quite pleased with the way things are going. Although he did say that all the new terminology that Clawson is bringing in is taking awhile for everybody to learn and get used to.
As an aside, George Lapides (who is pretty respected for his connections) noted on his radio show this morning that in his conversation with him "Fulmer had a gleam in his eye that I haven't seen in the last five years." And that he is really excited about the prospects in the next 2 to 3 years. George was talking with Jimmy Sexton (agent for a bunch of coaches) and Sexton agreed that there is more excitement internally up there than in recent years. Hard to read coaches though because I've never seen one that came out and said their team stinks. But I'm glad to hear that there seems to be a new attitude in the program.
By the way, don't shoot the messenger on this one. Sexton was also lunching yesterday with Hamilton to put the finishing touches on the new 7 year deal for Fulmer. Should be announced soon.

Fulmer worries me when he has a "gleam in his eye" before the season. See 2005. And why didn't he have this "gleam in his eye" the last 5 years? That's the whole problem with Coach Complacent...I mean Coach Foolmore.
His current deal runs through 2013 so what are they adding 1-2 more years to it? You pretty much have to operate on at least a 5 year deal nowadays anyway. I'd be more interested in the money they are going to give him.

workin' is entitled to his opinion.the only thing i would say is i disagree with it and his bashing of cpf has grown tiresome and old.thus he does have good insight on other topics and is not generaly negative other than cpf.but after last season i thought cpf would be fired but the team hunkered down and even gave nc lsu a good game.cpf is a good coach and the players like him but if he does not beat alabama and or florida this year he will be on the hot seat.i for one hope we beat them and cpf keeps his job.i remember a certain ohio state coach who consistently won but was fired because he couldn't beat michigan and that may be the same scenario that cpf sees.

I said that Fulmer had a gleam in his eye before the 2005 season. The other reporter said that he hasn't seen this "gleam" in his eye in the last 5 years. Fulmer was throwing around the championship word prior to 2005. So either the reporter is wrong about gleam in his eyes this year unlike the last 5 years or Fulmer or this is just another fluff piece on how this is going to be the year and that everyone should just forget the last 5 years (even though we won the East last year and in 2004). This is probably just a case of Lapides getting excited and drinking the off-season koolaid.

Hey we'll take Fulmer if you guys don't want him. For us, a successful year is making it to the Motor City bowl or the New Orleans bowl. Maybe he could make us a decent team. Don't see what the Fulmer haters are complaining about. You consistently have one of the best teams in the nation. The guy wins and wins. I wouldn't complain.
Posted by TurboFan on May 13, 2008 at 2:46 p.m. (Suggest removal)
The "gleam in the eye" comment sounds like an off the cuff remark without much thought or analysis. To Workin's point, how did Lapides not see a gleam in 2005 when Fulmer was handing out superlatives in preseason but supposedly saw one in 2003?
Question now is why is there a gleam now? Could be the end of the inbreeding of OCs has opened Fulmer's eyes. Will it be any good? No conclusions until October.
Posted by Colliervol on May 13, 2008 at 3 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Maybe George didn't meet with Fulmer before the 2005 season and therefore didn't know if there was a "gleam" or not that particular year. Lapides didn't offer anything quantitative to back it up. He just said Fulmer was noticably more upbeat than the last several times he'd seen him. The main point is that Lapides and Sexton both said there is more excitement inside the program than in recent years. Whether it turns out to be anything, we shall see.

Oh, and these memphis people talk about reloading, and I'm trying to grasp how their reload is any different from ours, aside from the fact that they lost all of their good players after this year...
We pulled in a rivals player ranked higher than any other player Memphis pulled in...we also pulled two 4 stars, just like Memphis. They pulled one more 4 star than us, and we pulled two three stars, one with two years college experience...
I think if we add things up here, they did not accomplish anything more than we did...and I'd argue that we're in much better shape. Enjoy Knoxville next year mempiss, for it will treat you about as well as the last time you came here.

workin - why don't you give it a rest? Your game is getting really old. But in case you don't want to, Coach Fulmer was in Nashville this morning, Murfreesboro at lunch, Clarksville this afternoon at Ft. Campbell, and Lebanon tonight for a caravan stop. There was media coverage galore at the caravan stop tonight. I'm sure you can find quotes tomorrow in the Tennessean (tennessean.com) - but I get the distinct impression you really don't care - you just want to gripe. Give it a rest.
Over - does the Commercial Appeal not have enough stories about Cal's great recruiting class to hold your interest? Got to come over hear and spew your drivel? Me - I'm still trying to decide how your genius coach didn't use his timeouts in the NC game and why he didn't foul when he's up three at the end. Anybody down there got the manhood to ask him those questions or do you just let him skate?

One day your going to wish you still had coach Fulmer. Tell coach Fulmer to his face that he is a fool.

Collier I distinctly remember Watson Brown with tears in his eyes in a post-game interview after UT thumped them 49-20 in 1990... "We stink!"
Then he was fired and didn't get a job for five years. Then he stunk it up at UAB... and was fired. Now he's at TTU and they stink.

Bruce is the man! He's workin' like heck to eliminate his team's weaknesses. I'll bet he draws nice charts, too.
How many 9th graders are starting for Kentucky this year???

Clarksville, Lebanon, Murfreesboro. That's what I call exposure. Some quotes in the Tennessean? WOW!!!!!!!

Lots of media coverage? Only quote I could find in the Tennessean was the following:
“Kenny O’Neal has decided to transfer and we wish him well,” Foolmore said.
The Lebanon Democrat had zilch on Fulmer. Maybe he did an interview on 1510 AM WLAC that nobody heard.
Was Fulmer on any of the Nashville radio stations yesterday? 104.5, 560 AM, 106.7? Pearl did a live interview on 104.5 on Tuesday at 5:00.

Gen Fritter 8:07 am. Phil retiring will be a sad day among the faithful. Many at Penn St cring at the thought of Joe Pa not being on the sideline also. B Bowden will be sorely missed, also.
Changing with the times is not needed. Hmmm taters and fritters........

I live in York, PA and most Penn St fans think JoePa should check into the retirement home. Even the alumni are ready for a change.

One of these days, Coach Fulmer is going to retire and we are all going to be sad.
--------------------
YEAH ABOUT AS SAD AS I WOULD BE IF I WON THE LOTTERY! THAT DAY CANNOT GET HERE TOO SOON!!!
3.447 DAYS SINCE THE LAST SEC FOOTBALL TITLE!! Just think, kids born on that day are now in the 3rd/4th grade, gas was about $1.25/gal, we only had memories of one BAD BUSH as prez, and most of the players on that team that went to the NFL are now FINISHING their careers!!! FOOLMORE is like a bad suit - keep it long enough and it might come back in style.

PennVol 11:42, I have a friend in telecommunications from that area and he is so anti-Joe-Pa its uncanny.
He told me to be worried that Phil is giving money back to the school. My tongue in cheek is directed toward the fact that Phil's time has past in many eyes. He has been getting a free pass for many seasons now. Good man, but no results as far as BCS or top ten. Can't seem to pry his hands away from the A Dept. He'll go when
Haslam or Thornton are embarrassed enough.

At least Phil made some changes with the new offensive staff. Time will tell if he made a good call but at least he did SOMETHING different, which is encouraging.

I hear the big orange caravan pulled into Dollywood this morning. Wonder if they'll find any potential recruits? The good news is that it did get out of memphis without a caravan jacking. I did hear that somebody did steal the hubcaps off of it and replaced them with those spinner hubcaps. It also now has one of those chain frames around the license plate but no big deal.
Memphis, 2009 NCAA Champs!!

overated you're becoming quite comical.very funny stuff. but since you mentioned it,memphis 20 and 10 season and second place in c-usa.early exit in the ncaa tourney.tennessee the sky is the limit(won't go the possible ncaa champs route as to not jinx them).

I sat next to BP last year at a Big Orange caravan event, and I can tell you that he has the unbelieveable gift of carrying on a one on one conversation, doing an interview and text messaging at the same time...and making every one feel like they're the only person he's interested in speaking with. Recruiting + Coaching ability = Championships. BP WILL win AT LEAST one-two national championships at UT....AND Memphis, though they will always be talented, WILL become the #2 basketball school in the state of TN. Write it down. FL and KY will be "want to be like UT".

VOLS85...actually I'm not a democrat. I am however a realist unlike many here and the FACTS speak for themselves in both arenas....as in now 3,448 DAYS SINCE THE LAST SEC FOOTBALL TITLE!
And as in the FACT that this is the SECOND time a BUSH has been at the end of his time in the White House and BOTH times the economy has been in the tank largely because of increased fuel prices and pathetic dollar value. But I guess 4000 dead soldiers - among other things - is a small price to pay if one is only interested in self-enrichment. Bush and FOOLmore have proven Forrest Gump's mama was right - stupid TRULY is as stupid TRULY does!

Memphis second in c-usa next year?? Brownie you just got moved down about 10 notches on the basketball IQ list. Second in cusa..what an insult. Our 3rd string players would win that conference.
This site is getting about as boring as the Memphis site.,..nothing. You guys need some more player suspensions or dismissals. Anything that I can use to fire a few insults.
As far as Tenn. and the SEC, I'd say probably Vandy will sweep you next season and Miss. State wasn't bad...sweep there also. Kentucky's getting better. We know what Arkansas can do when playing Tenn. Florida always has a pretty good team. I'd say Tenn. wil finish 3rd in their division. I'm thinking they'll win two in the SEC tourny and unfortunantly not make their usual sweet 16 showing at the big dance. They will get a 12 seed and get knocked off after 1 win...a final 32 finish. The most disappointing point in the season however will come in a devastating home blowout loss to Memphis effectively quieting all the trash talking Vol fans have been doing the last 2 seasons. Memphis fans will flood this board in a similiar fashion to what Vol fans did this season on the Memphis board. As a result some fed up vol fan will create the handle overatedtigers and hang out on the Memphis board for months insisting the vols were better even though they lost the game.
There, that outta fan a few flames.

over,
You insulted yourself with your last comment--by you saying that "some fed up vol fan will create the handle overatedtigers and hang out....." You are saying that YOU are fed up that you got spanked by UT and claiming that you are still better.
Good one, over, way to throw a jab at yourself and the rest of your mempuss "living in your bas-et-ball dreamworld" fans.

Isn't it great Vol fans that our basketball team and this board continously attracts the pond scum from Mempuss and Cuntucky??? The more their fans show up the more respect is shown to our ELITE BASKETBALL PROGRAM. Bruce Pearl, thank you for bringing all the attention to UT basketball. Its very comical to witness the hatred and jealousy that continuosly pours out from their mouths. Keep it up Bruce, its a great time to be a VOL fan.

volwalk is more intellectual "vol-limp"; delusions of elite status for ut is belied by shortcomings in logic and use of the English language; these shortcomings are amusing at best, and pitiable in the main. KY is one of the gold standard programs in college bball...and a standard denied only by delusional fools. Memphis is an historic success measured leagues ahead of uthug bball; in recent years, Memphis has maintained an elite status recognized by the polling coaches and writers, the networks--and--Bruce Pearl!!! Pearl says Calipari is a "hall of fame coach" and that the Memphis program is "elite". Funny to hear ut morons whine on when your own coach...as well as the world around you...speak the obvious.

My point extactly! itsme you confirmed it once more--your appearance and "intellectual" statements--confirms once more that it bothers you to see the UT Basketball continue to move up an elite status. Thanks for showing us once again that the mempusses and the cuntuckys of the world are so bothered by our success.
ITS GREAT TO BE A TENNESSEE VOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by volwalk on May 18, 2008 at 5:09 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Just to add a little more--itsme, Since you like to refer to some of the "so called experts" Rivals.com has Tennessee ranked in the top 10 again for the early 08-09 preseason rankings. Mempuss is ranked #18 and Cuntucky is no where to be found. I don't like to put much stock in early preseason rankings but since you like to use them as your credible source, I thought you might get a better understanding that the UT basketball program is hear to stay and surpassing your beloved tigers. One last thing, looks as though We have SIGNED the best recruiting class in the country according to your so called experts---hate to hear you guys miss out on Ebanks. I guess he didn't want to be a part of the 2nd best team in the state of Tennessee. Does Tyreke know how to write his name??? If he does, then why hasn't he signed a letter of intent???? Lots of question marks surround the mempusses and the cuntuckys. Not the case for the VOLS. We are Rocky Top SOLID and continuing to chissle out our Notch into the rock of the Elite.

vol-limp...read the whole article, or do whole sentences present too much of a challenge? The Rivals rankings assumed that the entire Tiger starting lineup was gone to the NBA. Bad news for you: Dozier and Anderson will travel next week to China with Taggert, Kemp, Mack, Robinson and Niles. The first 4 all have something in common with 3 of the 4 2008 recruits: They were Top 50 (you have ONE in 2008). The 4th was only ranked in the 70's....as was Niles (where your 4 stars ranked). More whole sentences for you: Rivals also has Memphis as the 3rd ranked recruiting class even without Ebanks. So be sure to check the preseason rankings again. The Tigers will be Top 10 and we'll see if your vols are "hear (sic) to stay"? More likely, you'll be chiseled down to someone else's crotch at season's end. Rocky Top High in noxious noxville.

itsyouidiot even if anderson and dozier do return it will not change your ranking niether were a threat last year offensively(especially dozier)and niether are a defensive threat.with much looming over the tigirls program you shouldn't be here running your trap.

mempussidiot,
You are living in your dreamworld--#3 ha ha! 3 of 4 in the top 50--the only signature you have is from #47 and I hear that he won't be able to qualify academically. Still living in that dreamworld--I hope for your sake that you do sign those guys--We don't want our RPI to drop from whipping you guys again next season. Hopefully, you will come to Knoxville ranked in the top 25.
