Josh Boyd plans to visit plenty of college campuses before he begins to narrow his list of schools.
The defensive lineman from Philadelphia (Miss.) High School has scholarship offers from Tennessee, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Florida State, Michigan and Southern Miss.
Boyd, 6-foot-3, 270 pounds, said this summer he plans to visit as many of the schools that have offered him as possible.
“I want to get to see the schools before I make a decision,” he said. “I want to see what everything has to offer me before I rush into a decision.”
Boyd hasn’t learned much yet about UT. He said he’s spoken to defensive ends coach Steve Caldwell, who offered Boyd a scholarship.
“He said they like the way I play,” he said. “They want me to come down and see more about the school.”
Right now Boyd knows he’s an important commodity. The Vols have placed a high priority on signing defensive linemen in their 2009 class.
“That’s a pretty big factor,” Boyd said, “if I were to choose to go there knowing they need defensive linemen. I might see a little early playing time.”
He said he hasn’t seen enough of the Vols to be familiar with their style of play.
Boyd has noticed their past success.
“I just think of it as a well-put-together program,” he said. “It’s a nice school and a good place to go.”
Boyd said he hears from many people in his community encouraging him to choose Ole Miss, Mississippi State or Southern Miss.
He said he hasn’t grown up cheering for any particular school and doesn’t expect the outside pressure to influence his decision.
“I wasn’t a fan of anything” he said. “It’ll just be me looking at the schools and picking the one that’s best for me.”
Boyd said he will begin visiting schools after he and his head coach, Teddy Dyess, create a schedule for his summer visits.

"He hadn't seen enough of the Vols to be familiar with their style of play".
Don't they have pay-for view in Philadelphia?
Come on and start, big fella!

Finally were after a D lineman
Posted by FWBVol on May 15, 2008 at 9:58 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I don't think too many people would need pay-for-view in Philadelphia, Miss., to get the Vols. They should be a part of the basic SEC package. Even if someone lives in Philadelphia, Pa., UT has been on ESPN enough where a football fan would see the Vols a few times a year.
The fact is a lot of these kids are football players and not much of football fans. They play the game and enjoy it, but they don't follow any particular school. This could work in our favor, or the favor of some other school. Hopefully when he steps in Neyland for the first time he'll forget about everyone else.

Don't worry Fulmer will turn him into an O Lineman, like he does all the other good D linemen.

I hope Josh Boyd never sees this thread.
Not everybody has pay for view. I don't.
Not everybody has "the basic SEC" package.
I don't.
Not everybody has cable so that they can watch ESPN. I do.
And some people, including high school kids and old bears, are so busy working or working out that they don't watch a whole lot of sports on television.
Josh, if you do see this, please don't let the assumptions of some folks that you should know all about Tennessee football influence you negatively.
Check out the number of former Tennessee linemen on NFL rosters, and you'll discover that Tennessee is a great place for a guy your size (and mine, we're the same height and weight) to play. Going back to the greatest lineman in Tennessee and Chicago Bear history, Doug Atkins, Tennessee has turned out great defensive linemen.

D-line, I may faint. By the way, TV or not the kid should be more aware of U.T. We would love for him to come on up and learn more!!

This kid looks good on rivals. 6'3" 275DE, I doubt it. You know if he comes to ROCKYTOP he will slide to the middle and plug gaps, just what we need!!!! He looks as if he could put on 15 pounds and still be mobile. 4.8 forty time is pretty damn good for a young man his size. PLEASE big guy, we need you!!

Of people who post on sites, I think we might have the worst fans in the nation.
Some of our folks make alabubba look 'seevilized'.
Ya'll are missing the fact in the article that he doesn't really have any front runner or care much about his in state schools...
Ahh, way to turn a positive into a negative.

brdteton. Negative Nellies are clucking again. They always turn a positive or neutral into a negative. The underlying tone for these armchair hens is FIRE FOOLMER.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, there are negative fans of every school. We all love the VOLS, some of us just more than others!!! If I'm a Dlineman I'm looking heavy at wearing orange because you can wear it early and often. We need the help.
GO VOLS!!!

Someone should remind Boyd of some of the program's alumni like Henderson, Haynesworth, Harrell, etc. They should also remind him that Saban signed close to 52 defensive linemen in the last recruiting class so the line to play will be a long one.
Seriously, I hope they make Boyd a priority. He is strong as an ox according to his stats and, based on the list of schools, he looks to be among the elite. It's now or never with getting some defensive line depth on campus, they can't afford to keep missing out on prospects.

Brdteton, do I need a bigger magnifying glass to read between the lines? I'm not reading what you seem to think is there. None of the previous posts said anything about who the front runner is or isn't or leanings toward Mississippi schools.
volroadwarrior, you repeat your diatribe daily and call others hens?

Ok,this is a start. Now lets get about 3 or 4 more of em.I like that the coaching staff is putting a priority on d linemen. Were are gonna be awfull thin next year if we dont.Come on down Josh. You'll look good in orange.Everything looks good in orange.

Aunt Bee looks great in orange. Why are we even looking at this guy.Don't we already have 4 D-lineman on the roster. We need this guy and 5 more just like him.Agree with invisiblekid. It's go time.

pms151, you are the one who needs more coffee if you were referring to FWBVol's 9:58 post. He/she was aware that Boyd is from Phila, MS; his/her point was that EVEN if Boyd lived in Phila, PA, he would or should know quite a bit about the Vols. Follow your own advice; read THEN post. I agree with the others that we need this guy and about 4 or 5 more like him, every year if possible. I just don't understand why we don't get more guys like this, given the well-known fact that we have been thin on the D-line for about the past five years at least, after having been known for strong line play for MOST of our football history! Good D-linemen seem willing to go almost ANYWHERE else to wait in line for a chance to play when we could use them right away! Let's get it done, recruiters!

It says GOVOLSEXTRA right? Not blastVOLSoverboard! Momma said if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all. Until the Boyd player chooses his school we are guessing first. Secondly, comments about his being switched positionally are funny when stated like Tennessee is the only school that brings a player in a moves him. Thats why years ago in the Majors regime we would sign about 5 Qbs and reposition them as Wr or Db etc. Nothing new under the sun boys and girls.

We haven't got a commit from a d-lineman yet, but I do find it funny when people say "finally their going after DL".The staff has officially offered 29 D-lineman including 12 DT's.Half of the ends their recruiting are probably going to end up DT's.
This is an evaluation period for the coaches. They are waiting on some guys to see them in camp against top talent before they offer.
Anybody in Knox heard of Hakeem Worthen of South Doyle HS?VQ is reporting he is 6'5 315lbs and was electronicly clocked running a 4.99 40.Word got out and now teams are showing interest including Southern Cal.Austin Price said Farragut and South Doyle will scrimmage later today, and Worthen will go head to head w/ Will Jackson a 6'4 280lb G who is being offered by WVA,Georgia Tech,Kentucky,Ole Miss, and Vandy.Should know more about Worthen later today.

On another note:All of the 08' signees are in good academic standing. As long as all pass the entrance exam, they will be here in July including the lone DT Montori Hughes.Let's just hope Rivals/Scout are right in saying they made a mistake on him.

savage-
Have we offered Worthen?
Posted by thesavageorange on May 16, 2008 at 12:56 p.m. (Suggest removal)
IBleedOrange444 ,Not yet.Worthen seems to be a little bit of a mystery.Price said he has moved around a bit and has been hard to evaluate.Believe me, someone or someones from the staff will be at that scrimmage. We are also recruiting Jackson, but haven't offered him yet.I hate to say it , but I hope Worthen whips Jackson. We need DT's more than OG's.We are in top shape w/ several OL.
Man, how big is USC's recruiting budget? If there is a kid in Iceland that can play ball they know about it.It does go to show the pressing need for good DT's when USC is calling around. They have more talent than the NFC east.
Posted by murrayvol on May 16, 2008 at 1:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)
The problem w/DTs is not that we aren't recruiting them. Everybody's recruiting them (hard) and of those w/D1 potential the vast majority reside in other states.
Ever heard the term "scarce as hen's teeth?"

murrayvol-
You're right. We recruited a lot of them last year, just didn't land them. I think that being thin at a position should help any team recruit at that position though, so we'll see how we do this year. Never heard that term, sounds like something you would find in the big book of redneck sayings.
Posted by thesavageorange on May 16, 2008 at 1:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)
murrayvol , The other problem is ,the ones that have commited, hav ecommited to their home state team.As I've posted before, of the 7-8 top 250 DT's that have commited, only 1 has commited out of state...Tyler Stockton to Notre Dame.
Hopefully we can get in state guys like Worthen and Curtis King into camp against some top talent and see what their made of, and hopefully,HOPEFULLY, they will prove to be worthy.

Good to see vol4jesus testifying again.
DTs are a rare breed, agreed. But you'd think we'd stumble across one every once in a while.
We just don't need opposing TBs running at full speed when they get to where our LBs are supposed to be. The middle of the line should be a anthill squirming, not an autobahn.
Its just tough to get them for some reason on the Hill. sjt18 thinks its because Chavis won't go see them. Touchdown thinks its because Chavis is expecting twins, savage orange says they won't leave their home state.....
Where or where can they be?

USC 39 - 6 Conf Titles; 2 NC's; 6 BCS Bowls
UGA 37 - 2 Conf Titles; 0 NC's; 3 BCS Bowls

UF 31 - 2 Conf Titles; 1 NC; 3 BCS Bowls
AU 30 - 1 Conf Title; 0 NC's; 1 BCS Bowl
ND 30 - 0 Conf Titles (N/A); 0 NC's; 3 BCS Bowls
That's players from these schools in the NFL currently (start of 2007 season).
Since 1999, look who has won their conference; played in a BCS game; and won an NC. We're the poorest performing team of all of these. Yet, we supposedly have been ranked in the Top 5 or Top 10 most years in recruiting. So have these other schools. Some teams are cashing in on their future NFL talent and actually getting something for it.
When are some of you going to start demanding some results?

For some reason, Oklahoma was overlooked with 34 players. Fit them in above.
OU 34 - 5 Conf Titles; 1 NC; 6 BCS Bowls
Also, here are the rivals.com ranking for UT recruiting since 1999:
1999 - Pre-rivals, but we were Top 20
2000 - Pre-rivals, but we were Top 5
2001 - Pre-rivals, but we were Top 5
2002 - Rivals # 2
2003 - Rivals # 18
2004 - Rivals # 11
2005 - Rivals # 4
2006 - Rivals # 23
2007- Rivals # 3
2008 - Rivals # 35
Somebody else can look up our poll finishes each year. I'm too tired.

Comparing conference title count is apples and oranges. Miami got 4 out of 8, nobody else from that conference is listed. OSU and Michigan got 6 out of 8, none else are listed. Texas, FSU, USC and ND are single listings from their respective conferences. BCS bowl conference tie-ins and mediocre conference competition give those one or two teams in other conferences an advantage in BCS invitations.
I understand your point but the only relevant comparison that can be made is to Florida, Georgia, LSU and Auburn. And I think we sorta tie Auburn in futility. A change has been made, let's see if there are better results.

pd, is there a particular reason you like to speak for me... especially when you often misrepresent what I think? I thought we were pals...
I don't have a low view of UGA. I just don't have as high a view as many others that seem to be ignoring some glaring potential problems. Their OL may be incredibly talented... but they will have alot of guys in their two deep that are both young and inexperienced. They have NO proven WR's. Stafford has NOT shown he's a big time big game QB. Etc, etc, etc.
They have great talent. They have a great coach and staff. But they don't look heads and shoulders better than UT much less UF... and they have a terrible schedule.
