Nicky Anosike became the third former Tennessee Lady Vol to make a noteworthy debut in the WNBA.
Anosike started at center for Minnesota and recorded 11 points and four rebounds in the Lynx's 84-70 victory over Detroit on Sunday in Minneapolis.
Former Lady Vols Candace Parker (34 points for Los Angeles) and Alexis Hornbuckle (seven steals for Detroit) started strong on Saturday.
Hornbuckle scored eight points Sunday.
Fellow rookie Charde Houston scored 21 points and another first-year player, Candice Wiggins, added 15 for Minnesota.
Former Minnesota player Katie Smith led Detroit with 17 points.
Minnesota's Seimone Augustus, the league's second-highest scorer last season, scored 14 points.
Sun 77, Liberty 63: Tamika Whitmore scored 14 of her 17 points in the first half, Asjha Jones and Lindsay Whalen had 16 each for visiting Connecticut, which spoiled New York's season opener.
Shameka Christon had 14 points for New York. Former Lady Vol Loree Moore had six points and six assists but also five turnovers.
Expansion: WNBA president Donna Orender said the league is looking to add two teams in the next five years.

eVOLution, are you a shamidiot or tamidiot?
Posted by BigOrangeVol on May 18, 2008 at 11:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Actually, out of all 14 WNBA teams (which includes 193 ladies on those rosters) only seven meet your criteria.
I'll do the math for you since that seems to be one of your weaknesses: it's 3.6%. So 96.4% AREN'T named Tamika, Tameka, Tanisha or Shameka.
Tamika Catchings - Indiana
Tameka Dixon - Houston
Tameka Johnson - Los Angeles
Tamika Raymond - Connecticut
Timika Whitmore - Connecticut
Tanisha Wright - Seattle
Shameka Christon - New York
Out of curiosity... how many Billy Bob's and Joe Bob's are in your family tree?

The last two posters have no sense of humor whatsoever. I completely get what he meant....
maybe it's not Tamika or Shamika, but there are alot of names LIKE that (Chamiqua, Taneka, Semeka, Janequa, Clubqueqwa, etc)
look those names up BigOrangeVol, waste even more of your time.

And people say the WNBA inspires no passion.

Slow sports news Monday obvious by the post material or atttention(too much) to details that are of no signifigance to the article. Good to see Former-Lady Vols doing well in the first year of WNBA. Only thing hard to cheer for Detroit is coached by that former bad boy Bill Laimbeer of Piston past.

and 4jesus, when it concerns the WNBA, if you dont talk about something off article, no one would post! "search your feelings Luke, you know it to be true."

Brad I have an excellent sense of humor but it disappears in the face of ignorant racism-based prejudice. The seven ladies I listed are the ONLY ones with names "LIKE" that.
Is it funny if I posted that 80% of the MLB players are named either Carlos, Juan or Jose or that 80% of the NHL is named Dmitri, Ivan or Sergei? Are 80% of all doctors and tailors named Abe, Hymie and Ira? What about 80% of all dry cleaners named Huan, Jing or Li? Are 80% of all distance runners named Jomo, Jimiyu or Itumu? Are 80% of all mobile homeowners named Billy Bob, Bobby Joe or Billy Ray? Are 80% of all Chorus boys named Bradley, Stephen or Taylor? I doubt that you would find it too funny if you were a person with those names and someone made a joke racially stereotyping you!!!
My time is just that, mine! What I do with it is my business not yours. I can waste it or cultivate it in whatever manner I so choose. It’s America and you and your Klan buddies are free to post as many ignorant messages as you please to try and prove my point.

Getting back to the article...
Nicky Anosike is off to a very good start and so are all of the other lady vols now in the pros. There is a lot of talent in WNBA and I enjoy watching them as much as the NBA>

BigOrangeVol: I appreciate the point you are making, but I suspect that 80% of the readers tuned out after the first couple of examples. I for one am extremely proud that we had ladies like Tamika, Chamique(sp?) and Semeka leading the Lady Vols over the years and would welcome anyone else who can play like they did to choose Tennessee.

Yep, Deaf Ears!
I'm very proud of our former Lady Vols in the WNBA as well. Right now we have 13 LV's playing for 9 of the 14 teams. They represent The University, Lady Vols and Coach Summitt with class and dignity.
The game is fun to watch and Coach Wooden said it best, women play the purest form of the game. If Seattle, LA, Sacramento, San Antonio, Houston, Indiana, Minnesota, Detroit or New York are playing all the better.
With all of the former players and coaches that are in the WNBA or that are in the collegiate coaching ranks it is an exciting time to be a proud part of the Volunteer Nation.

Screw you pricks who felt the need to post a comment, racist and or sexist.
Anyway, great to hear that Nicky is playing well. People have knocked her for years, it just proves that with confidence she can shine.

Nicky is being asked to play a different role (including scoring) and she has risen to the challenge. Coach Summitts' seniors are doing well and again we can be proud of them !

Way to Nicky. I always felt she could have been more of a scorer at UT, but passed that role to others.
Ashley, add 64 more days to your schedule and It's MBB time in TN.

Anosike is a BEAST!!!
We will miss her defense next year terribly.

If you saw Candace Parker's debut in Phoenix, you saw a real treat. She schooled Tarausi and it was great to see. Living up to the hype is CP3.
