Tennessee’s Kaden Hensel and J.P. Smith won singles matches Wednesday and advanced to the second round of individual play at the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
Hensel beat San Diego’s Thomas Liversage 7-5, 6-4, scoring service breaks late in both sets.
Smith, the SEC freshman of the year, beat Kellen Damico of Texas, 6-1, 6-2. Smith was coming off a four-day break while Damico played with the Longhorns in the team championship match Tuesday night.
Hensel and Smith play doubles today against Ohio State’s Drew Eberly and Justin Kronauge.
Lady Vols: Lady Vol Caitlin Whoriskey lost her opening match in the NCAA Women’s Tennis Individual Championships to No. 9 seed Sanaz Marand of North Carolina 6-2, 6-1.
Whoriskey, ranked No. 41, finished her season 16-9 overall.
She will team with UT doubles partner Zsofia Zubor to play Souther Cal’s Amanda Fink and Gabriela Niculescu today.
