DESTIN, Fla. - Georgia coach Mark Richt was 20 minutes into an interview when someone finally asked him a football question at the SEC spring meetings. The reporter prefaced his question with an apology.
In those 20 minutes, Richt had taken us from a Christian mission in Honduras to a tour of military bases inside and outside the United States. It didn't seem like the appropriate time to ask him to break down his depth chart, even if it's one of the deepest and most talented in college football.
For the 15 days leading up to the conference meetings, Richt traveled far beyond the boundaries of SEC football. One trip was spiritual, and the other was patriotic. Both were inspirational.
The first trip included 24 of his Georgia players. The second one included rival coach Tommy Tuberville of Auburn.
One day in between the two trips, Richt gathered with family members to give his son a proper sendoff to college.
None of that will help the Bulldogs win a national championship, which one preseason publication has predicted they will do. But after the last two weeks, winning a national championship might not seem as crucial.
Water was crucial in Honduras.
"There's not a lot of clean water," said Richt, who also made a mission trip to Honduras last summer. "They have a spigot out there where people can go to get water 24-7. And they come 24-7."
Richt's players took part in a water-delivery system, transporting bins of water to Hondurans throughout the area. They also set up fence posts, dug irrigation ditches, painted whatever needed painted and shared their Christian testimonies.
For all they accomplished, the trip might have done as much for the Bulldogs as the Hondurans.
After witnessing the poverty in Honduras, sophomore center Chris Davis told Richt he felt ashamed for complaining to his father about needing a new truck.
"He said, 'After this, I don't deserve the truck I have, let alone a new one,' " Richt said.
The coach isn't sure the Hondurans have it so bad.
"They have family and they've got more time than we do," Richt said. "We're so stinking busy we don't take time for the Lord and our family like we should.
"Sometimes, I think they've got it over us."
Richt returned from Honduras in time to see his Clemson-bound son, John, graduate from high school. Then he was off again, this time on a whirlwind military trip with four other college football coaches - Tuberville, Notre Dame's Charlie Weis, Miami's Randy Shannon and Yale's Jack Siedlecki.
"We didn't go into Iraq or Afghanistan," Richt said. "But we met an awful lot of armed forces who had been there."
At a military base in Germany, Richt talked with an Air Force man who had been severely wounded in a roadside bombing in Iraq two days earlier.
"The bottom half of his legs are blown off, and he's sitting there talking to you kind of matter-of-factly about what happened," Richt said. "I'm not saying he wasn't feeling bad, but he certainly wasn't in the tank.
"He was a military guy with parents who were in the military. He wasn't like, 'I can't believe this happened to me.' He was more like, 'This is what can happen when you serve your country.'
"They've got pretty high morale over there. They've got a mission and they know their job."
Even in the midst of such an enormous mission, the troops haven't forgotten their homeland loyalties.
A Georgia fan serving overseas handed Richt a note, which read: "Tell the Bulldogs we'll get up at 3 (a.m.) and watch them. Make sure you tell the team and everybody in America that will listen to you, we're not doing this in vain. We believe in what we're doing."
Richt apparently believes in it, too. He was still wearing his honorary dog tags when he arrived at the spring meetings.

Coach Richt is a class act with impeccable character. He sets a tremendous tone for what our youth are starving for. Hat's off.

I live in Marietta and hear CMR frequently on the radio. Day in and day out have never heard a more solid citizen.....he is truly outstanding. That being said I hope the Vols give him another opportunity to build more character this year. He makes it really, really hard to hate Georgia....but the other bulldogs make up for that.

I repent. I read the article before reading Adams name in the last post.
Sorry that I gave a hit to any of his articles. What amazing contrast ... the character of Mark Richt (or CPF) vs Adams.
Posted by sjt18 on May 29, 2008 at 1:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)
DCflorida just revealed his character. How many missions trips have you been on? Carried water for poor people lately?
There was NOTHING poor in character about encouraging his guys to get fired up for a team he hadn't been able to beat for awhile... certainly nothing worse than Meyer continuing to run up the score on UT last year.
Before you even start, I said at the time and consistently since that Meyer did exactly what a coach should do in college football today. If you get a chance to blow a good team out, you do it- for the BCS, pollsters, recruits, fans, etc. CPF could've and should've done it against Cal two years ago and USC last year. Had he done it to Cal, they might not have had the confidence to beat UT in 07. I've said this is one thing CPF has not adjusted to- the "new" sportsmanship.
Both guys did what they needed to do and should have done... stop your whining.

Good example of mentoring young men Richt.Glad to have you as a rival coach.I'm just glad the chief has got your O figured out.Now if he could just figure out a couple others.

Mission trips often work like that, you go to bless and return blessed for your obedience. Be careful though, the NCAA will start asking about this blessing being some kind of extra benefit.
Hey, at least they weren't circumcizing little boys tebows down there.
As far as the class act, I've got to agree with dallasdog1. The other Bulldogs-especially the fans make up for Richt's class and character. And let's not forget the 2001 mob that jumped up and down on the Power T at midfield. Once again, Adams does a great job of lending aid and comfort to Tennessee's opponents.

DCflorida,
You really need to get over that endzone dancing. Georgia beat Florida fair and square. If UF had won that game the endzone dancing would have been forgotten, but because UF lost that is all UF fans talk about, “just wait till next year” a UF fans says, “we are going to pay them back.”
Second, this is a great article by Adams.
Anyone who questions Richt's character had better look at themselves first. Richt's lifestyle is Kingdom centered. Not one other SEC coach took his team on mission trip.
Look at Tim Tebow, he may go down as one of the greatest players to play in the SEC and he spends his summers in the mission field. But wait, when he scores TD he celebrates and throws his arms around, so he has no class, give me a break.
DCflorida, you need to come up with more logical arguments before you go questioning a man's character.

How come his son is going to Clemson?
Posted by sjt18 on May 29, 2008 at 9:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)
DC, I don't give him slack because UT beat them... I give it because it was a good motivational move. Much like UT and CPF, UGA had some kind of block against UF. He had the team to beat UF most of the last 7 years. There was nothing wrong with what they did that wasn't paid for on the field with the celebration penalties.
And there is a difference between telling about what you've done and bragging about it. I salute you for what you've done... but more so Richt. Many think that Christ taught charity for charity's sake. He didn't. Richt has it right. Christ taught charity as a companion to spreading the gospel.
I admire the man and wish him an 11-1 season every year... and a second place finish in the East. In a world with too many Nick Sabans, Les Miles, Houston Nutts, Rich Rodriguezs, etc whose primary interest are themselves and their careers... it is nice to see some one with a better perspective.

mtnbikrtn, maybe his son wants to be an Engineer or Architect... so who would he choose between USC, GT, UT, UF (I think), Auburn, and Clemson assuming he wants to stay relatively close to home?
I really don't know but there are educational reasons to go to Clemson. They have a good printing school, engineering school, wildlife mgt, and probably others.

DCFlorida: Your perspective is skewed, pal.
No coach, repeat, NO COACH, displayed less class that Spurrier when he was at Florida. Your memory is spotty. I'm no dawg fan, but it appears to me that CMR is far classier than Spurrier OR Suburban Meyer.

The UGA endzone dance was classic. It caught everyone off guard, especailly the UF coaches. They were dumbfounded and had the "Big Huddle" to try to get everything back on track.
In hindsight, they should have laughed at the yellow flags, told their players how stupid it was, shrugged it off and played the game. Instead, Meyer et al. fed the frenzy and got killed.
I wish we had thought of it!

All of us should respect Richt for his mission trips, trips to visit the troops, and his mentoring of his football team. Likewise, all of us should respect Tebow for all of the good things that he does in the community and abroad (even though circumscising children is a really weird way to choose to help out, think I'd rather carry some water). The endzone dancing thing was not that bad. It was a motivation tool for his team that obviously worked. Meyer "running up the score" on us was also not that bad. It's not like we made it real hard for them to run the score up on us. We played like a middle school team going up against the varsity state champs. In fact, complaining about someone running the score up on you is about the gayest complaint you can make, and I agree that Fulmer should learn how to run the score up on teams when he has the chance. In the BCS system, you need all the style points you can get.

Dislike is a prominent portion of the football landscape. Tenn's mountains are Bama and Fla.
Neither were climbed last year. 100 were given up.
Both Richt and Meyer are surrounded by a more fertile plain of recruiting. That's a fact, not an excuse. We either have to recruit better than 35th or move the school to Texas or Fla. Since the move in unlikely, one might suggest we recruit better.
No coach can coach up Dupree. But as a head coach, head means being responsible for all, not the bs put out about mentoring and teaching. The scoreboard tells us how well a job the head coach does. Plain and simple.
As J. Johnson, I believe at Miami retorted when told Lou Holtz had said the Canes scoring 60 on N Dame was low-class- "He needs to worry more about his defense than about my offense"......

Richt dumped on Florida, ran his troops on the field and stole the show from Meyer. Give him credit who else in SEC would have thought of doing such, it set the tempo and helped win the game based on tempo and shoving a shoe down the mouth of the Gators... Richt is a clean all American guy who is thoughtful toward the youth and the good of his team... Go Dogs except when you meet the Vols...

Richt is a class coach, and I'm glad he took some of his players on a mission trip. The trip that Teabag took was just for show, and we don't need any more of that. What Richt did was pure class. I don't know of any other SEC coach, other than Bobby Johnson or Croom, who has their act together as much as Richt. I mean, Spurrier can't POSSIBLY put together a mission trip- all his players are wearing ankle monitors. I have and will pull for UGA unless they are playing the Vols, and wish them a very satisfying 2nd place East finish again in 2008.

BS. You all put way too much stock in all that off-the-field crap about bulletin board material and getting the crowd fired up. All the pre-game crap is out the window 3-4 plays into the game. Same for anything ancillary crap that happens during a game. It's water under the bridge in short order.

Coach Richt is an upstanding guy. I am stationed in Ga, and their fans for the most part stink. I was nearly in a bar fight this past year when a guy came from behind me and jerked off my hat and barked in my ear. If my buddies had not been there I would have pounded the guy and probably spent the night in the local jail. I have two more seasons here in GA, and I hope that Mark Richt stays a super nice guy, but I also pray that the VOLS continue to spank the dawgs. GO VOLS!!! By the way Adams is right I saw in this years "Lindsy's" 2008 college football ranking's that Geogia was picked to win the National Championship, HA!! Not too many people know this but Fulmer has been the national spokesman for the Jason Foundation, which is an agency dedicated to the reduction of teen suicide, which is at epidemic proportions. He travels the nation making speeches, has persuaded several other SEC coaches to join in the effort, and hosts the Fulmer Golf Classic, which raises suicide awareness and money for JFI.
Both Fulmer and Richt should be applauded for their mentoring efforts and community service. I just find it very strange that Adams did not mention Fulmer's work with JFI over the last nine years but sees fit to praise Richt's work in Honduras, an endeavour Richt apparently just embarked upon. If he cannot stomach saying something positive about Fulmer's community work, he could at least have asked one of his subordinates, like Drew Edwards, to write an article about Fulmer's worthy cause. I wonder if Adams is even aware of JFI.

1. richt is a good guy. sending his team on the field after the touchdown wasn't a cool move. i am still amazed a fight did not break out on the field....which could have happened.
2. tebow simulating using a cell phone on the field had absolutely no bearing on the outcome of the lsu game. the "cell phone simulation" took place in the second quarter. florida held the lead until the last minute of the 4th quarter. i did not notice any renewed enthusiasm or improved level of play from lsu due to a cell phone gesture.
ashley, give the tebow cell phone thing a rest. you don't like the kid. that's cool. i understand. but, tim tebow was the last person responsible for florida losing the lsu game or any game for that matter last season.

BigOrangeinCarolina, Georgia didn't finish second in the East last year. They finished tied for first with UT. We went to the SECCG based on the head to head competition tie-breaker, but that did not change the final standings. But hey, we were East Co-Champions! All of this "who hates who" is entertaining and all, but I would really rather win the SEC and talk about that. Everything else is chatter.

DC,
Can you read?
I specifically said that Meyer did what has to be done in this age of college football and expressed my wish that CPF would learn that. If he'd gone for the jugular against USC last year, it wouldn't have been a close game.
I've never said anything about Tebow's missions trips. As badly as I despise the Gators, I respect Tebow immensely for his testimony as well as that of his parents. The circumcission thing was a little weird and predictably mocked by opposing fans... but I don't have anything to say negative about what he does in missions.
My point was that you are whining about Richt's "motivational" gimmick while supporting a narcissistic coach that has ALWAYS tried to run the score up on opponents.
I said neither coach was wrong. You say Richt was wrong but Meyer wasn't. That's inconsistent for one with such a lofty standard of sportsmanship.

DCSOvol, Get over it. Majors got Majors fired. He drank too much which probably contributed to his health problems and made racist comments in the locker room at a bowl game. UT could have dropped the load on him publicly but didn't.
Considering the "patience" that was given to Battle and has been given to Fulmer... are you really delusional enough to believe UT canned a living legend who had won the SEC three of the 7 years prior for no better reason than an assistant coach wanted the job?

what's scary about the richt gesture is the point of view some are you are taking which is.....
it worked. kudos for richt.
what if alabama had done that during the bama-tenn game. florida-georgia is an intense rivalry. the game is nicknamed the world's largest outdoor cocktail party until both schools decided to pretend it wasn't.
a bench clearing incident could have happened. and while people pick on the ethics of mr. meyer.....if spurrier had been the coach, i guarantee a retaliation of some sort would have occured and who knows how it would have escalated.
in the meantime, everyone is convinced that florida will do something to retaliate this season, which could also lead to who knows what.
again, i like richt. i think he is a good guy. that was not a wise or good move on his part. a lot of bad things could have happened, and as someone else pointed out.....let's see someone else get away with that gesture.
how about meyer sending his whole team out to dance in the endzone? how would that fly?
wrong is wrong. that was wrong
