DESTIN, Fla. — LSU football coach Les Miles said Wednesday at the SEC spring business meetings he knew about a medical condition that former quarterback Ryan Perrilloux blamed for his erratic behavior.
Perrilloux, projected as the Tigers’ 08 starter, after a string of incidents off-the-field as well as consistently breaking team rules, was tossed off the team in early May. He recently announced he was signing at Division I-AA Jacksonville (Ala.) State.
In a recent article on Yahoo.com by Josh Peter, Perrilloux said that was diagnosed with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, which is characterized by obsessive thoughts and rituals. He said he was prescribed medication to control symptoms such as anxiety.
“We were fully informed of all the issues that surrounded that case,” Miles said. “We tried to address that as best we could. There’s a point in time when it’s best for all parties to go on.
“Hopefully, he’ll take that (LSU) experience, take his second chance and make the best of it. We root for him very hard.”
Perrilloux started a couple of games last season when Matt Flynn was hurt, including the Tigers’ SEC championship game win over Tennessee. He was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.
Details For Saban: Alabama second-year football coach Nick Saban is a detail-oriented type of guy.
For instance, Saban was discussing with his coaching staff just the other day about itineraries of the 2008 road trips, which includes former LSU coach Saban’s first trip back to Baton Rouge on Nov. 8.
“We talk about where we’re staying and who’s going to ride on what bus to the games,” Saban said. “Somebody on our staff — I’m not going to tell who — said, ‘I hate to tell you this, but when we play LSU, ain’t none of us riding on your bus.’ ”
Nutt’s changing career roadmap: When Little Rock native Houston Nutt became Arkansas’ coach in 1998, he could already see the future.
“I thought I was going to be there until I was retirement age, and then I was going to step into (the athletic director) shoes of Coach (Frank Broyles),” said Nutt, who resigned after 10 seasons at Arkansas last November to become head coach at Ole Miss.
“He told me that. He told me, ‘Let’s make that our goal.’ He helped me a lot of different ways. He trained me administratively to prepare me in some ways for that.
“But I would never ever think about bringing it up or rushing him out. We had too close a relationship.”
Broyles resigned effective last Dec. 31, but before that the school had already named Pittsburgh AD Jeff Long* as his replacement back in September.

We are enabling criminal and sometimes violent behavior with these "medical excuses". Sorry, I don't buy it.

I don't buy it. A very common symptom of having OCD is a strong sense to abide by the rules and not do something criminal or wrong. This is driven by fear of punishment or law enforcement.

As the poet, Robert Burns, said, "The best laid plans of mice and men Gang aft a-gley." Nutt is a good football coach, but replacing an icon like Broyles? I don't think so. Never were there any cell phone records suggesting that Broyles was behaving improperly with a woman not his wife. Re: Saban's bus companions on his return to Baton Rouge, I'll guess that the first assistant coach to be terminated is the one who made that comment. I don't think he has a sense of humor where he is the butt of the joke. Re: Ryan Perrilloux' mental illness, Paxil won't cure stupidity. The guy actually waved the "Hook 'em, Horns" sign at me during the Army HS All-America week, thinking my orange was burnt orange, and he was committed to Texas at the time. So, his word is no good, either. Go Vols! SAVol

I was speaking strictly as a fan and not as a physician, and have rethought my comment about Perrilloux. It was too harsh. Statistics that I have reviewed show that probably 30 million adult Americans suffer from some form of anxiety disorder, and 35-50% of these will also suffer from depression. 13% of American children have anxiety disorder. The stigma of mental illness still prevents many from seeking treatment, particularly African Americans, according to former Surgeon General David Satcher's 2001 report on "Mental Health: Culture, Race, and Ethnicity." Dr. Sacher lists seven "U's" that prevent access to mental health services: Uninsured, Underinsured, Underserved, Underrepresented, Uninspired, Untrusting, and Uninformed. So, if anyone is offended by my too-quick comment, help somebody needing care find a helpful mental health resource. Go Vols! SAVol

"The OCD made me do it." LMAO! If he were really "sick" he should be able to sue LSU using the Americans with Disbilities Act. Otherwise, he is simply another kid with A**holian syndrome.
HotlantaVol writes:
txsvol - I agree more with your first statement. Although 30 million adults suffer from these issues, not all of them get involved with illegal drugs or repeatedly violate rules or laws. Plus, with regard to the seven U's, Perrilloux had obviously already been diagnosed and was under medicinal treatment. If he's well enough to convince a coach to give him a second chance, he is well enough to not blame his stupidity on his illness. LSU didn't discriminate against Perrilloux b/c of his OCD. He broke multiple team rules. Where would the ADA come into play????

War OCD being the new excuse for everything that goes wrong with football players.

VolGrad, it pains me to explain sarcasm in the United States of the Offended, but here it goes anyway.
If he suffers from OCD and has meds for it, then his behavior wasn't his fault, right? That's kind of what the article was wanting us to believe. It's the OCD that made him do all of those things. And since the behavior wasn't his fault but the fault of OCD, then LSU got rid of him unjustly and therefore the kid would have a claim.
THAT'S why I was laughing my arse off. Nobody takes the blame for their actions anymore. It was the OCD, the meds, the devil....anyone/thing to blame but themselves.

I have an ex-wife that has this OCD she did some terrible things to me while we were married. And tried to us this OCD as an excuse for her actions, my opinion all this OCD is is just an excuse to act out because a person fills cocky, then when there cought up with thay act like a baby to get out of trouble! unfortunate perrilloux will never be a good QB, because unless he's in the spotlight alot he will end up throwing a fit.

Hotlanta, I had written, now that we have dealt with Nutts and butts, let's go to nuttier. Then came the diatribe that I mostly deleted by back-spacing. It was the wee hours and I wasn't at my best. It has been obvious that Perrilloux has been a head case from the time that he came to national prominence as a high school senior. I'll bet they have a really good counseling department at Jax State. He'll need it to stay eligible. I try to express opinions without being too personal or judgmental. But IMHO, he has serious character defects, and needed to leave the LSU football program. Nobody has blamed this on Coach Phil Fulmer yet! We're getting better! Go Vols! SAVol
