Report card: Tennessee vs. Wyoming

QUARTERBACKS (F)

Nick Stephens (3-of-9, two interceptions), looked like a second-stringer with no experience. Jonathan Crompton, 11-of-27, 91 yards, looked like a QB who could lose his job to a second-stringer with no experience. Both were erratic throwing the ball and ineffective managing the offense.

RUNNING BACKS (D)

Lennon Creer broke a 23-yard run but didn't run with any authority between the tackles. Tauren Poole showed good leg drive and a nice spin move, but couldn't break a run longer than 8 yards. Arian Foster sat out with a bruised leg.

RECEIVERS (F)

Josh Briscoe and Austin Rogers each dropped key passes, and Gerald Jones had a holding penalty that wiped out an 11-yard Creer run. Lucas Taylor didn't have the speed to catch up to a well-thrown Crompton bomb.

OFFENSIVE LINE (F)

Poor pass protection early put Stephens under the gun. No penalties, but no aggression. Run blocking left much to be desired. At this point, it's either the scheme, the players' talents or the players' desires.

DEFENSIVE LINE (D+)

This beat-up unit finally caved in. Defensive ends had a rough time with containment, and Wyoming was able to pound the ball at the tackles and create running lanes to the tune of 167 rushing yards. Walter Fisher did force a fumble.

LINEBACKERS (D)

Rico McCoy had 10 tackles, but there were too many other missed tackles to count. UT appeared to have problems filling gaps, as Cowboy runners shot through the line and into the secondary on more than one occasion.

SECONDARY (B+)

Dennis Rogan had eight tackles and a fumble recovery, and Wyoming didn't complete a pass longer than 26 yards. Wyoming schemed away from Eric Berry (five stops) and the Cowboys failed to pass for 100 yards.

SPECIAL TEAMS (B+)

Britton Colquitt averaged 39.8 yards per punt, celebrating a 54-yarder by holding his arms above his head and pointing both index fingers toward the heavens when his team was down 13-0. Rogan had three kick returns for 80 yards, including a 40-yarder.

COACHING (D-)

The offensive plan could not have been much worse, even if limited by poor QB play and a lack of playmakers. No imagination, no new wrinkles, but the same complexity that has left UT tripping over itself. Defense was solid, but failed to provide the shutdown effort necessary.

OVERALL (F)

Having seen their leader fallen, the UT players followed suit and collapsed against a far inferior opponent. The Vols failed to play with the emotion they promised after Phillip Fulmer's firing. It was a homecoming that will haunt the current Vols to their deathbed.

After last weeks loss I stated I had never seen a worse UT football team. That was true until this week.
If they have no intentions of playing why play the game. I would use as many 2nd and 3rd string players as I could to finish the year. You have nothing else to lose. Coleman would would finish the year at QB.
This team deserves to lose if that is the best effort that they can put out.

I hope TX Tech loses a game. No way can we get Leach if they win a National Championship. Watching this team score at will against top 10 teams and seeing how our offense probably couldn't score if the other teams defense forgot to go out on the field. Get a commitment now before it is too late.

I agree. Kelly would seem to be a great hire and I base that on his entire body of work, not just tonight's game in Morgantown, although that was impressive.

The more I research Brian Kelly's resume', the more I like this guy. He's won two national championships(although they were in Division II) and has done wonders in just two seasons at Cincinnati. He's a relatively young 47 and is a Massachusetts native just like Bruce Pearl. He currently makes $825,000/year so even if we offer him $2 million per season that would more than double his current salary.

We could start with the recruiting ratings for players on each team.

We could refer to the preseason rankings.

We could shut up and look at the final score.

volbald writes:

Remember Leach collects pirate paraphernalia and displays them in his Texas Tech offices. His look on the sidelines give him the apprearance of a successful Hal Mumme. Will UT go with "eccentric" for $3+million a year? Butch Davis currently seems the better fit. He has a reputation, NFL contacts, southeastern recruting contacts, and a proven ability to win. And N.C. won't pay Davis more than it does the basketball coach. Whoever the new coach is, he'll have a difficult rebuilding job before he can win with any simblance of regularity against Meyer, Saban, Richt, and Miles.

kabul_vol writes:

This team appears to have mailed it in a long time ago and is just waiting around until the end of the season.

I am very disappointed. With such poor QB play, did they at least try to G-gun? I was unable to watch or listen. If they didn't then why the heck wouldnt they try somethign different? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results!

Better look at the track record of coaches over a period of time AND against quality opponents. Can't argue against Butch Davis' college (won-loss) record, for example.

TNPilgrim writes:

This makes Hamilton's decision look much better. Fulmer obviously doesn't deserve the dignity of waiting until the end of the season, and will be remembered as a coach that was just a little bit better than Bill Battle. His national championship was on the same level as the one Ga.Tech had - a fluke! This will be a chance to Hamilton to show himself to be a real winner - hire a coach to take this program to the elite level it deserves, and purge the entire staff that has been satisfied with "acceptable mediocrity" since 1998.

BTW - to gregorsamsa2, enjoy this while you can. One would assume from your obnoxious posts that you come from an area that considers football to be a sport that counts scores by balls kicked into a net. You obviously don't know much about the SEC - maybe you should concentrate on graduating from high school first, then try to learn something about major college football so you can make an intelligent comment.

volcop writes:

The last two games should be played only by guys from Tennessee. Maybe not as talented but they will play for Tennessee. Some of the players out there on the field today should have thier scholarships taken away from them and sent home. Coleman should start the last two games. He11 he couldn't be any worse than what was on the field today!!

asleep#212036 writes:

I think Kelly is a good choice, along the lines of an Urban Meyer, Bruce Pearl, or Jim Tressel. Mark Dantonio as MSU is similar, although I wouldn't call them a lower tier team with poor resources. I've been saying it for weeks, even before Fulmer "quit", Butch Davis is Hamilton's first choice. Whether he can pull him away from UNC, especially in light of losses to teams like Wyoming, I don't know. Don't underestimate sleazy agents like Jimmy Sexton and their willingness to broker under the table deals, even while also representing the guy getting screwed in the deal. Go (2009) Vols!!!

Chartervol writes:

Sentinel has gotten cocky in its grading now that Fulmer has been shown the door. Don't recall any F's until Hamilton dropped the hammer.

Those pressbox egg salad sandwiches are right tasty. Wouldn't want to jeopardize them.

MANVOL writes:

I first thought the timing was right telling Fulmer he would not be back and let the fans and players send out with some good memories of his final days, but it looks like the players and his coaching staff are going to let him down and roll over.

Leach would be a brilliant hire so long as he gets a strong defensive coordinator. Leach is having a brilliant year.

You can argue his W-L record versus Fulmer all you want. A couple of points of differentiation. He'd have more resources at UT than at TTU. And, Leach's stock is rising while Fulmer's stock has been dropping steadily the last several years and basically is now in freefall.

What could Leach do at a place like UT with first class facilities? What could Fulmer do at a place like Texas Tech?

GoVols77 writes:

This was a message FROM the players TO Mike Hamilton, John Adams, and the pissant Knoxville talk radio ego-tripping jerks.

And the message was this: You deserve it!

Read Sam Venable's article. Listen to Peyton Manning, Peerless Price, Eric Berry, Al Wilson, and 99% of other former/current players. Phil Fulmer WAS the heart and soul of Tennessee football.

btw, I'm shocked that my earlier post was deleted (but the moderators here apparently didn't realize that 3 other posters had quoted it...).

The fact that it was deleted showed the anti-Fulmer bias of this website (and the KNS in general).

Does anyone know where I can get a full transcript of Fulmer's resignation speech?

This team didn't quit today - it never showed up! The last time I saw a team play with so little passion and play so soft was when we lost to North Texas State 30 years ago. No heart. No leadership. Just disgusting from start to finish.
