Russo: It was a heck of a run for Fulmer

Well, certainly on this Thanksgiving weekend, I would be remiss without thanking Philip Fulmer for nearly two decades of memorable moments in our local and Tennessee sports scene.

I was there when an eager offensive coordinator took over the reins on Rocky Top, and was fortunate enough to follow him to the top of the college football mountain. Here we are 17 years later, and the call for change is about to change the landscape of Tennessee football.

You know, you can take the coach out of Big Orange Country, but you'll never be able to take Big Orange Country out of the coach. History, and I believe the Tennessee faithful, will look kindly on the man from Winchester, who rose to the top of his profession, and did so with class. He also did it with high regard for his colleagues, his players, and his community. Fulmer has devoted much of his life to Tennessee football, and Tennessee football is much better for it.

Congratulations, coach, on a heck of a run, and all the best to you and your family.

Rick Russo is sports director of WVLT.
