It's only early October and the bloggers have put the rumor mill crews on overtime with this one: Steve Spurrier to UT.

And who woke up Johnny Majors? By the way, there's a game this Saturday and a quarterback competition.

There's lots to digest in our blogger and sports writer digest today so start chewing:

Geoff, what's a coach supposed to say? NIU has nothing to lose so they'll play to win.

But you are correct, if Directional U wins or even loses close, it will be another tough week for the Vol Nation.

NIU will win this one if they can keep it close. My guess is Stephens will kick start the offense and the Vols will win big.

I'd just like to see 60 minutes of mistake-free football, particularly on the offensive side.

Back in the old days, a new coach would get at least four years to "get his own recruits on the field." The fans have shrunk that horizon to about four games. Still, I'd like to see Clawson get his type of QB pulling the trigger.

I don't believe Clawson can go to the potty without Coach Fulmer's permission. His hands are tied. His mouth is taped. Coach is calling plays and they are too predictable. Every opponent knows he will not gamble. Therein lies the problem, sports fans. Heck, the players know it too, which is why when they do TRY to run something other than vanilla puddin', they look like circus clowns. They know full well Coach has no confidence in anything other than his stale playcalling.

Dog-gone-it! He's being stubborn about the whole situation. "I'll show you who's boss, or I will take us down the tubes without you." The students athletes deserve a coach who is willing to put the best product on the field. What motivation do they have to get better if not for playing time?

If Tennessee loses this weekend we might get THIS GUY (http://muschampforut.wordpress.com) much sooner.

The scene after that game would not be one I would want to be around. Talk about all out riot.

Sadly...when a team THINKS they can beat a storied program like ours and are passionate and well coached...it creates a large obstacle for our guys. I'm hopeful (I like Crompton...but we need a fresh look and feel for the team) we'll come out and play like we all know we can play. A big win will do a lot to sooth the players and coaches angst for us.

While I may have some idea of how "we can play" on defense, I have no idea of how we can play on offense.

Perhaps we can "pray" on offense.
