Men's golf team finishes third

The Tennessee men's golf team finished third and two Vols placed in top 10 Tuesday at the Wolf Pack Classic in Reno, Nev.

The No. 2 Vols shot a 1-over-par 289 and finished at 7-under 857 at Wolf Run Golf Club. New Mexico State held onto its day-one lead for the team title at 847, five shots ahead of Arizona.

UT senior Chris Paisley shot 2-under 70 and finished fourth at 7-under 209, four strokes back of individual winner Dustin Garza (73) of Wichita State.

UT's David Holmes shot 68 to tie for seventh at 212 and sophomore Robin Wingardh (74) tied for 21st at 217.

UT freshman Garrick Porteous (72), competing as an individual and in his first collegiate tournament, tied for 26th at 218.

Also for UT, Cameron Lawrence (78) tied for 42nd at 222 and freshman Darren Renwick (77) tied for 53rd at 227.

In other UT news:

n Chris Bodary of UT was named SEC freshman of the week in cross country. Bodary finished 38th at the 8K Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic in 24 minutes, 52.84 seconds, the 15th-fastest time run in the SEC this season.

n UT sophomores Boris Conkic and Matteo Fago won twice and need another tennis victory today to advance to the 32-team doubles main draw at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. The pair defeated Alex Ahlgren and Enrique Olivares of East Tennessee State in the first round of qualifying, 8-6. In the second round, Conkic and Fago defeated 35th-ranked Kean Feeder and Clancy Shields of Boise State in a tiebreaker, 9-8.
