Hornbuckle is on title run

In the aftermath of the Detroit Shock’s WNBA championship Sunday, the team trophy often landed in Alexis Hornbuckle’s hands.

“They kept passing it off,” the former Tennessee Lady Vols standout said Tuesday of her Shock teammates. “They said it was heavy. Rookies get the worst job. I didn’t mind it.”

The work suits her. The 5-foot-11 guard carried her weight in the 76-60 title-clinching victory over San Antonio, scoring nine points, grabbing nine rebounds and recording nine assists.

After consecutive national championships to end her career at Tennessee, Hornbuckle became the first player to celebrate collegiate and WNBA championships in the same year.

“I tried not to concentrate on it during the playoffs, but it was in the back of my mind,’’ said Hornbuckle, who stopped by the Lady Vols’ team workout at Pratt Pavilion to visit with coaches and players.

This was a pit stop. Hornbuckle is off to Istanbul, Turkey, Monday to play overseas.

“It’s very Americanized,’’ she said of her next destination. “I have to eat. They have KFC around.”
