Central Florida golfer Marika Lendl has an unusual post-round routine.
While most competitive golfers head for the practice tee or putting green, she takes a nap.
"I have done it since I was a little girl," said the freshman.
With a two-stroke lead heading into today's final round of the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championships, she likely kept a few of her competitors awake trying to figure out how to beat her.
"It was a solid round," said Lendl, who sits at 6-under par 138 following a 70 Saturday at Fox Den Country Club. "I played really well. It is hard to follow up a good round with another good round, so I was fairly pleased."
Behind her are Sidyne Crane of North Carolina and Cindy LaCrosse of Louisville (140), and Dori Carter of Ole Miss and Lauren Doughtie of North Carolina State (141). LaCrosse had a 67 Saturday for the best round of the tournament so far.
In the team competition, Tennessee, which led by six shots after the first round, struggled to an 18-over par 306 Saturday. The Lady Vols are in seventh place, 12 strokes behind leader North Carolina, which sits at 1-over 577.
After UT had an impressive showing of 5-under par Friday, coach Judi Pavon feared her squad might have a little letdown.
"They all played so well yesterday and put themselves in an unfamiliar position," she said.
Leading the Lady Vols is Ginny Brown, who shot a 75 and is tied for 10th at 144. Behind her are Rebecca Watson (145), Lauren Spurlock (148), Nathalie Mansson (152), and Bearden High graduate Emily Sills (168).
Pavon feels confident the team can recover and possibly finish in the top 5.
"I think we will play a little better tomorrow," she said. "We will be settled down and more into our comfort zone."
Also ahead of the Lady Vols are Louisville (579), N.C. State (583), LSU (584) Ole Miss (585), and Furman (588).
Besides enjoying post-round snoozes, Lendl is also known for her famous father - former pro tennis star Ivan Lendl.
She admitted that having a high-profile parent has its plusses and minuses.
"Sometimes you get a lot of attention you do not necessarily want," said the Connecticut resident and graduate of the Leadbetter golf academy in Sarasota, Fla. "But he can tell you things from experience, where other kids' parents can't."
She said she took up golf instead of tennis because he always played golf for relaxation and she started playing with him.
However, she hopes to play golf one day for a living, not just for fun, she added.
Among the other Knoxville golfers, Jillian Brodd of Ole Miss is at 146 and Alyssa Randolph of Kentucky is at 154.
