The Tennessee Lady Vols softball team completed its perfect fall season at 9-0 after sweeping through four games over Oct. 11-12th at the Lee Softball Stadium. UT outscored four weekend opponents by a combined total of 38-1.
In Saturday’s opening contest, the Lady Vols downed Milligan College over six innings of action, 6-0. Sophomore hurler Ashton Ward led UT from the circle by firing a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts. Junior Tiffany Huff posted a 2-for-3 effort at the plate with two RBIs and senior Danielle Pieroni went 2-for-3 with an RBI to guide the offensive attack. Sophomore Kelly Grieve demonstrated her speed on the basepaths by swiping two bases while going 2-for-2 at the dish.
A tough challenge awaited the Lady Vols in Saturday’s finale as UT faced off against 2008 Olympian and Venezuelan National Team pitcher Johana Gomez and her teammates from Lee University. UT managed a 4-0 triumph as Pieroni blasted a home run as part of a perfect 2-for-2 offensive effort. Senior Lillian Hammond and freshman Ashley Andrews keyed a speed assault from the top of the line-up by lacing two hits while swiping two bases. Lady Vol freshman hurler Cat Hosfield was dominant from the circle, striking out 10 while allowing just two hits.
Ward struck out eight during a six inning wipeout of Pfeiffer College on Sunday as Tennessee rolled by a staggering 19-0 count. UT banged out 16 hits in the match-up with home runs coming courtesy of freshmen Dee Dee Fryer and Jessica Spigner. Five different Lady Vols registered two hits in the contest while UT's speed game racked up a staggering 10 stolen bases.
Spigner and junior Nicole Kajitani each delivered two hits with a home run and Hosfield tossed a two-hitter with 10 K’s as Tennessee completed its perfect weekend on Sunday afternoon with a 7-1 victory over Chattanooga State. Pieroni continued her torrid production at the plate by lacing a single and a double in the victory.
The Lady Vols finished the fall campaign at 9-0 overall after rolling through two four-game fall tournaments and downing a high-profile UT alumni team, featuring former players such as Monica Abbott, India Chiles, Shannon Doepking, Katherine Card and Tonya Callahan, 10-7, on Oct. 5.
UT will christen the 2009 campaign on Feb. 5 at the BYU Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah, with a 5 p.m. match-up versus Northern Colorado.
