Five Big Things: To beat Mississippi State

With it being a presidential election year, would you re-elect Phillip Fulmer to coach the Vols?

1. Get Physical: Almost to a player, the Vols say Mississippi State was the most physical team it played in 2007, including eventual national champion LSU. Tennessee must match State’s intensity on both lines of scrimmage or today’s game could be different than its grind-it-out 33-21 victory last year in Starkville.

2. Win Outside: Tennessee hasn’t been a tough team to figure out thus far on offense. Opponents commit to stopping the run and leave receivers in one-on-one coverage outside. Until UT’s wideouts can win some of those matchups with regularity – or hit a few more deep passes – it’ll be tough to muster much offense. Tennessee needs to show it can pass to open up the run.

3. Play For Third: Third down has been a bugaboo on both sides of the ball. UT’s defense ranks last in the SEC in opponent conversions, while on offense the Vols have 30 three-and-outs this season and are 10th in the SEC in third-down conversions. Simply put, the Vols have to perform better on both sides today.

4. Hold the Line: Tennessee’s vaunted offensive line has turned into a shrinking violet. They were pushed around against Georgia and struggled against Northern Illinois. State won’t be the most impressive front seven UT sees this season, but the Vols will have a hard time winning if they can’t run the ball. This group needs a gut check, and they’ll need to have a good day for the Vols to win.

5. Just Win, Baby: The Vols are beyond style points. A win, even if it’s 2-0, is a win. A loss means UT drops to 0-4 in SEC play for the first time since 1977, Johnny Majors’ first year as head coach. It also means the Vols likely won’t be bowling for the second time in four years. UT’s players have bounced back well so far, but every team has a breaking point. If Tennessee has any designs on turning its season around, it has to win tonight.

How about...for once...BE PREPARED!

Biggest understatement of the year so far. Mississippi's cow bell ringing folks are coming to watch their defensive line eat up our truly "offensive" line.

haha nice!

Just punch them in the mouth. What do you have to lose.
Get about 7 or 8 unsportsman like calls. Late hits.
Just play like your life and your mom's life depended on it. Play mad. Play angry. Just hit someone. Then after the whistle. Hit them again. That's what the VOLS need tomorrow. Just once this season. Become the most nasty, mean, hated team in the nation. If you don't fight, don't play. Blood, anybody's blood, needs to be on your jersey and pants.

We need a win - Vols, do it to Mississippi State. Hit them so hard that they won't ever forget that they played a tough, rejuvenated Tennessee football team on an 18 October evening and got their tail whipped soundly. Go Vols!!!!

If we can get a 1st down.. TN might be able to play football. Come on offense.. let's get it going...OK!! Ok as in how bout staying on the field long enough to score. Don't rely on our defense to put you in scoring position.

Always look forward to your post. You make sense. Defense spends way too much time getting worn down. No juice in the fourth. Looks like a lot has happened this week. I am anxious to see if the boys play different tomorrow night.

If I were OC, the first play I would call would be a deep pass to Denarious Moore. If completed the next offensive play call would be a deep pass to Denarious Moore. Pass, pass, pass, until they take stop putting 8-9 in the box. Might be risky with a young QB, but we still lost to UGA trying to run.

Following BYU's thrashing at TCU:

"I was very impressed with TCU tonight," said BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall. "Coach Patterson had his team more prepared than I had our team. They were sharper in every phase of the game and executed at a higher level from beginning to end. That comes down to simply coaching and preparation. We're looking forward to learning a lot from this game. There are many things to learn. I don't think we played to our potential in any phase of the game."

Gosh, that sounds like the last few years on Rocky Top...it was one game for BYU.

A bunch of NC sports radio hosts are going over to the game. One says ' I'm going to show the others what a real college football atmosphere is like'. I hope he's right and next week I hear good things about their experience and game time atmosphere. GO VOLS

Score the most points. Please score more than Auburn's offense did and please hold them to less.

OldNumber7 writes:

Yep, pretty much true stuff. And if Fulmer senses his demise through his good-ol-boys, he will throw all those offensive coaches under the bus without hesitation.

If Fulmer would get out of Clawson's shorts other than demand high tempo practices that are for once physical, this whole thing could turn itself around. By the way, if you watched the ESPN special 3 years ago that featured Tennessee football practice - you saw then they weren't physical.

Someone should find out if Clawson's practices at Richmond were tougher than at Tennessee. If so, consider firing the problem and give Clawson the job for one year - see what happens. If it doesn't show improvment, start a search this time next season.

You play like you practice.

These things are absolutely useless.

This football team is like a failed Frankenstein monster: Lifeless, laying down, no electricity to jump start it.

I see no point in the "Five Big Things: To beat any team."
