Berry named SEC Defensive Player of the Week

Eric Berry of Tennessee was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

Berry had a season-high 10 tackles, a sack and returned an interception for a touchdown in Tennessee's 34-3 win against Mississippi State last Saturday.

Berry's 72-yard interception return for a touchdown was his fifth interception of the season and 10th of his career. His 397 career interception yards broke a 60-year old SEC record held by Ole Miss' Bobby Wilson (1946-49, 379 yards).

With his five interceptions this season, Berry leads the nation in interceptions.

Berry has intercepted a pass in each of the last three games.

Probably not, but he should win the Thorpe Award.

If this guy is not a legitimate pre-season canidate for the Heisman next year it will be a shame. His play so far this year has shown he deserves it. Too bad Tennessee hasn't won more this year to get this guy the recognition he deserves. Keep playing hard Eric.

Had to listen to this game on the radio. It sounded pretty exciting to hear it. Then I YouTube'd it and was shocked at how he can keep his feet like he does when he stumbles.

I'm fairly certain I'd snap my wrists if I tried something like that.

Berry's TD return Saturday was incredible, even from Section QQ, Row 31 (three rows from the top of Neyland Stadium). At his current pace, it's only a matter of time before Berry breaks the all-time interception return yardage record.

Charles Woodson couldn't wear Berry's jock strap.

Berry for President.

Congrats Eric you are a special player indeed and we are lucky to have you in the Big Orange.

GO Vols !!

djstatik writes:

Aside from Berry's amazing speed, moves, and agility I say HAT'S OFF to the two or three key blocks that made that TD possible. A great effort by the entire defense!

Compared to the last guy that won the Heistman from the defensive side, its a no brainer.

But let's not dwell on something that probably won't occur. Let the focus be on alabubba and our cheater neighbors to the south.

Going old school...
roll tide, toll.
roll tide, roll.
around the bowl,
and down the hole.
roll tide, roll.

Soft spoken, but hits like a bull! This guy brings it every week!

Congrats on a well deserved honor Eric! Your play was certainly worth the price of admission last Saturday night and I look forward to seeing you have another terrific game this week vs. Alabama!

Ok he wont win the heisman but please believe that he has the publicity/ stats to win the jim thorpe award. I mean he's leading in interceptions ( which i didn't realize), also he has that wow factor. I'm telling you...we have a great secondary.

I'd be snappin' a lot more than my wrists if I tried that.

He could but there'd be a lot of wasted space.

Berry has accomplished much this year despite toiling for a struggling franchise. He can likely take credit for knocking Knowshon Moreno out of the SEC and into the NFL a year early.

Only Vol that could start for any college team. I wish we could get some DE with his athleticism like we used to have. Great kid with brains, too.

Started out in PP, 15 rows from the top.

Really good view, but if you get there early when its almost empty with a few under your belt- vertigo.

Elix Wilson created 2 of the 3 picks and deserves the game ball. He has more tackles than anyone in the SEC.

Not trying to take away anyting from E. Berry because he is absolutely fun to watch. When you see a hard hit/tackle you don't even have to look at the number on the jersey to know it is E. Berry. He's the only defensive player that consistently hits with a 'lights out' attitude.

blitzshoot writes:

Can only imagine how bad this season would be w/o this guy on the team. He makes a big of a diffence as any qb would.
He's a lot better than Woodson from Michigan that beat out
Manning, but he does not have ESPN running his campaign.

navyvolinva writes:

I agree that wilson is very underrated...All he does is make tackles and most people said he was too short and slow. UT has their hands full with Bama's running game. No superstars but they are quick and aggressive. If we can contain the back side from cutbacks we got a chance. 15 yard cushion will not work.

having done something similar to that on a basketball court one time, i am completely certain that i would snap my wrist if i tried that

HOT OFF THE PRESS:

Phil Fulmer was quoted as saying about this award " I'd like to be the 1st to congratulate this young man on such a prestigious award, if we only had more dad burn time we'd get this guy on offense." He then responded by asking " Who's Eric Berry?"
