Mississippi State football coach Sylvester Croom doesn't need a calendar to know more than half of the 2008 season is gone with the wind.
He could lament the season-opening loss at Louisiana Tech, or the 3-2 loss to Auburn. Win those games, and State is staring at a 4-3 record instead of 2-5 and on the verge of being eliminated from bowl contention.
"No question we've been playing with a sense of urgency for some time now," Croom said. "We've been trying to get back on track and get on a roll where we can hopefully have a shot of getting into a bowl game. Now, the opportunities are getting fewer and fewer week by week."
As State prepares for Saturday's nonconference home game against pesky Sun Belt Conference foe Middle Tennessee, the Bulldogs must purge themselves of the "what ifs" of Saturday's 34-3 loss at Tennessee.
What if State quarterback Tyson Lee had not sprained his knee on the opening drive? What if State had tackled better on Tennessee's opening scoring drive of the second half? What if the offensive line had protected Lee better in the fourth quarter, when he threw two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns?
"We were in that game until midway through the fourth quarter," said Croom, noting that the Vols were clinging to a 13-3 lead entering the final period. "We played hard but not always smart."
On the game's opening drive, before Lee got hurt on the 11th play of the possession, he completed 4-of-5 passes for 56 yards. Each pass resulted in a first down, and he had the Vols reeling.
Then, on second-and-four at the Tennessee 19, he was slung down awkwardly for a 3-yard loss by the Chris Walker. Two plays later, State's Adam Carlson missed a 39-yard field goal try, and any momentum the Bulldogs could have had was gone.
Lee wasn't really the same the rest of the game, though he had a couple of spectacular scrambles when his protection broke down. And when he had two passes picked off in an 87-second span of the final period and returned for TDs by Tennessee's Eric Berry and Demetrice Morley, it inflated the final score of what had been a close game.
"Bad decisions on my part," Lee said. "I should have thrown the ball somewhere else."
Croom said he thought Lee's injury was a factor.
"His throws were a bit off and he wasn't as sharp as he normally is," Croom said. "Some of it has to do with his drops, and I don't think there's any question that his injury had an effect on him."
Croom said Lee was sore Monday, but he expected he'll be ready for Saturday's game.

Croom and Fulmer are the two worst coaches in the SEC and this year's performances show it. Croom is good for Miss. St. because no matter who is the coach there they will only ever be mediocre....too difficult to recruit there. Fulmer on the other hand has no excuses...he's simply bad.

I think he's saying what everyone is thinking. He's basically saying Tennessee sucks and even Miss St. should have beat them.

Not much for Phil to brag or smile about. The worst in the SEC West loses to the worst in the East. The loser bowl is all that UT will see this year.

Sounds like he's been taking lessons in spin from Fulmer. Croom's seat is getting pretty hot as well.

Injuries are a part of the game. They happen to every team.

Everyone talks about being "Croomed". Wouldn't it be ironic if Croom ends up getting fired in part because he lost to another well-known lousy coach - Phil Fulmer?
CrankE writes:
We were really close until we got stupid with the football and threw it to Eric Berry, a sophomore who has in a mere 21 games become the SEC career leader in interception return yardage.
Yawn.
I wonder which coach will be gone sooner, Croom or Fulmer? Where's a good KNS poll when you need one?

Lee was running for his life when he got hit...in the first quarter! MSU was still in the game at the beginning of the 4th, so we really can't point at the injured QB that caused the loss for MSU. Blame it on EB.

this is a whole lotta ifs. maybe they are valid, but anyone can have ifs. what if we had a better coach? what if we were more talented on the lines and at qb and wr and te? what if we never lost a game? we'd be 100 time defending national champs is what

if memory serves me correctly, didn't bear bryant play half a game against TN on a broken leg? so what's the point of the article? Croom making excuses? who cares?
I'm all for Fulmer leaving, he's lost a competitive edge and he seems more interested in relationships than winning. However, lets give credit where it's due. The defense got after a QB on Saturday and was pushing to the backfield all day. That was part of the victory. If Lee doesn't get rushed, hurried, and pressured, he doesn't make bad decisions and bad passes which lead to INTs and TDs. Fulmer needs to go, sure. But the team played well Saturday. Nice job guys. Croom, you lost not because of Lee's injury but because of TNs defense.

buck, where have you been all your life. That saying is as old as dirt.I will agree tho,it is funny.
Greyback_Vol writes:
Lee's injury played absolutely no role in the loss to TN. Lee was still much more mobile than most SEC QBs in the second half. He has pretty good scrambling ability.
Perhaps the 5 sacks allowed by the MSU offensive line played more of a role?
Haven't seen a UT defensive line dominate an opponent's offense like that in a long time. MSU couldn't protect the QB, and had even more trouble running the ball.
