JaJuan Smith waived by Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks requested waivers on guard JaJuan Smith on Wednesday to cut their roster to the maximum 15 players.

The 6-foot-2 Smith was signed by the Mavericks as a rookie free agent after he went undrafted out of Tennessee. Smith played in all seven preseason games, averaging 4.7 points and 0.9 steals in 9.6 minutes per game.

He is borderline athletic enough and isn't as good of a shooter as Lofton. Honestly, I thought they had about the same chance of making it.

The thing that should have made Jajuan stick is the energy he plays with.

He was doing well. The Mavs just didn't have room for him, but he will be on someone's roster soon. NBA rosters are so small (only 15) that good players often have to hang on and wait for an injury to get signed by someone who needs them. Jajuan will fit somewhere nicely and continue to develop. It looks to me like he has a chance of sticking in the US and avoiding the overseas game.

If he is as persistent as he was at UT he will catch on somewhere.

I know he wants to play basketball but maybe he could pull an Antonio Gates? Baksetball is first though...
