Brown always liked orange

Alabama native awaits shot at Tide

As a resident of Alabama, one is all but constitutionally required to choose sides: Alabama or Auburn?

Wes Brown was an exception. He had what he considered a valid out:

He was a Tennessee fan.

“I had Auburn friends and Alabama friends and they tried to get me to pick sides,” UT’s junior defensive end said. “I stayed neutral.”

His neutrality didn’t make him popular, though. Rooting for the Vols in Athens, Ala., Brown had to develop a thick skin long before he ran through the “T” for the first time in Neyland Stadium.

He was the kid wearing orange to school when everyone else wore crimson.

He was the kid talking smack while Tennessee was ripping off those seven consecutive victories over Alabama from 1995-2001.

“I grew up used to taking a lot of criticism,’’ Brown said.

Saturday night’s game (TV: ESPN, 7:45) at Neyland Stadium is a big deal to a lot of folks for a lot of reasons.

Second-ranked Alabama (7-0, 4-0 SEC) is trying to stay on track for both an SEC title and a berth in the BCS championship game.

Tennessee (3-4, 1-3) is desperately seeking a signature win in a troubled 2008 season.

UT coach Phillip Fulmer is fighting to extend his reign as dean of SEC coaches.

And for Brown, this is the rivalry he fell in love with.

As a 9-year-old he sat in the Legion Field stands the night Peyton Manning orchestrated a 1995 rout to turn Third Saturday in October momentum from Alabama to Tennessee.

“You don’t need any extra incentive to play this game,’’ Brown said. “This game speaks for itself.’’

It’s a border war, but one with regular defections. Even Fulmer, a Middle Tennessee native, was tempted by Bear Bryant’s recruiting pitch before signing with the Vols.

Brown is the only player from the state of Alabama who will play for UT on Saturday night. Even though he lived his entire life in North Alabama, his heart was always tugged across the state line. Brown’s parents are from Lawrence County, Tenn.

“They kind of rubbed off on me,’’ he said.

His recruiting tug-of-war involved Alabama, Auburn and UT. He liked then-Alabama coach Mike Shula, but there was only one offer he coveted.

“I knew from the get-go my heart was here in Tennessee,’’ he said.

Tennessee got a hard-working technician in Brown. He pushed his way into the rotation in 2007 as a sophomore and made his first start in the 2008 opener.

“He’s one of those guys that his pad leverage is always there,” said defensive ends coach Steve Caldwell. “His steps are always there. He does a great job with his movement.

“I guess it’s what does he not do really well? And really, not anything. When you grade out each week, Wes is going to grade out the highest of all of ’em because very seldom does he do anything wrong.’’

Maybe it was because Alabama was coming up on the calendar that Brown played his best career game last Saturday in a 34-3 win over Mississippi State.

“He was in the backfield all day long making plays,’’ Caldwell said.

Saturday night completes the home-state hat trick. Beating UAB avoided any taunting on trips home. Playing at Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium was fun, even if the results weren’t.

But, in Brown’s mind, those two pale in comparison to doing battle with the Crimson Tide.

“This is my Super Bowl,” he said.

I would like nothing more than for Wes to play a big role in screwing up bama's drive for a national title. Knock some helmets off of those mullet heads, big guy.

Tough as nails if he has been thru all that. Give him credit for overcoming all the criticism that you know he has endured. This young man deserves to be called a Tennessee Vol.

This is BAMA week, if you can't get up for that buy a different shirt and cheer on another team. If having a chance to upset Nick Satan and spoil the Alabubba's season doesn't give you a chubby, you need to check your vol card. I've been watching the same games as you this season, but for some reason, I just feel something special is on the way Saturday! Find something good to say this week VolFans. Even if you have to tell your favorite Bama story from the past, be positive and get ready to roll the tide!

Go Vols!!

Stranger things have happened and always will, but should the Vols hit on a few more cylinders----and the Tide's looking at a crimson tidal wave in Knoxville as a foregone conclusion Saturday night----and the 2008 Vols beat #2 Alabama-----then a lot of us may just admit that, after all the good (majority) times he's provided to us Vol fans, CPF will have deserved this one. The more likely foregone conclusion is that this good man has run his course------and with dignity and goodness. Win this one for the Gipper, guys. He's always stood by each and every one of you.

John Parker has always been a Jeckel/Hyde QB. Put just a little pressure on him and he becomes careless with the pass. Make him throw long and Berry will be running up the sidelines all night long.
He loves the slant and short out patterns so you have to get penteration and make him check off.
Lets hope Brown is in the Bama backfield more than their running backs are.

I live in Athens Alabama and my family and I got the chance to see Wes play almost every home game. I saw Phillip Rivers play as well, Wes means so much to our community. Even the die hard Bama Fans in Athens stop short of putting Wes Brown down. Character is defined by actions, and Wes has made this Athens Resident proud. Now go kick sombodys but, GO VOLS!!

As a UT fan living in Alabama, the '95 Bama game is undoubtedly my favorite of all time. At the time, I was still young enough to literally not remember ever beating them. It was a streak I thought would never end, especially after 1990 when we came in ranked in the top 5 and lost to an Alabama team that had started out 0-3. But if anything, that should give us all some hope. Nobody gave that Tide team a chance against us, very similar to the way we don't seem to have a chance this year.

Not a bad dream to buy into, Bama is beatable, if we don't beat ourselves, and if us fans just KEEP ON BELIEVING, or start to !! Be mad at ourselves, be down on ourselves, and start fighting for ourselves.

i am also from athens, al and a student at UT. wes is an obvious fan favorite not only in athens but here in knoxville. its easy to see his hard work and passion for the game. if all of our team played with the same drive as wes brown, we'd be a tough team for anyone to beat. if the crowd can stay in it and get loud which hasnt happened all year...look for wes and the rest of the vols to be the next upset in the sec

Cute story. Too bad it won't have the happy ending.

Remember how 'bama put 31 on the board at UGA? I do. No way we can make it look respectable like Georgia did. Something tells me Saban's goal is to assert total domination tomorrow. Now, the Tide is playing for BCS points. What better way than to run up the score against a weaker opponent?

Lemme tell you guys something...

When we get pressure on JPW, he has got to be perfect in hi s throws. Hes not going against some juco secondary. We are tied for the national lead in ints. Make him scramble, get him on his heels, and lets just see. I bet you, we take one to the house and at least have two picks. There is no room for error on his part. We need to limit that ground attack and make him put it up under pressure. Hes not the best QB weve seen.
