South Alabama to face Vols in 2013

MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama’s fledgling football program has signed to play a game at Tennessee in 2013.

“South Alabama beginning a football program is great for the sport and I think you will see an excellent product emerge,” UT athletic director Mike Hamilton said in a release. “This game is a win for both schools and we look forward to welcoming Jaguar fans to Knoxville.”

The Jaguars begin play next season and will be part of the Sun Belt Conference. The contract is for a single game with the Vols on Nov. 9, 2013.

“When you look at South Alabama football, Tennessee is where we want to be in the long run,” South Alabama coach Joey Jones said. “It’s exciting to know that our start-up program is going to be playing Tennessee in five years. These are the types of schools that we want to play in the future. Even though the game is years away, it’s a great step for us on our way to becoming a big-time program.”

The South Alabama game is UT’s second announced game for that season. The Vols play Sept. 14, 2013, at Oregon to conclude a home-and-home series.

Woo hooo! unlike previous years, we are scheduling a "cupcake" for an opener??? then again...by 2013...they may be good enough to beat UT if we keep fielding teams like the one we have now.

Maybe by 2013 UT will have there --stuff-- together and beable to look good and beat these guys.

Hmmmmm lets see...Eric Berry is a Sophomore. After the season, we redshirt him, then we pull a galooly on him aka Tonya Harding. The NCAA will give him 4 years more of eligibility, and we can win the South Alabama game. Brilliant

I would like to throw some ideas out there for the perfect case scenario get Cutcliffe back down here on the hill, but we all know this want happen. 2nd motion please please go find Trooper Taylor and bring him on back because this guy can and does get involved with the players which had our sidelines totally pumped the entire time he was there ! where we can get back into the rhythm of pounding the rock and being competitive to what our neighbors south of us has accomplished !! and for real why did we let these guys ever leave the hill !!!!! Jon Gruden is also a name to throw into the mix it's a long shot but worth looking into all they can say is no. please whoever we get to head the program in the forward direction lets do some in state recruiting and actually get commitments from our state players instead of having them come in as true freshman on Alabama and playing against us. then maybe we could even compete with these guys when they come to town.

Since when does the season begin on Nov. 9th? This will probably be the homecoming game.

Umm, we DID beat a team from Alabama this year. Something happen to your short-term memory?
I'm all for picking on Sun Belt teams. It's better than picking on Division 1AA teams, like every other team in the SEC East has done this season.
Besides, Phil has never lost to a team from that conference. (Saban lost to one last year, though.)

TJ - just having some fun. Didn't mean anything by it. My only real care right now is wanting to see PF done.

Fulmer is done, it is just a matter of how hard the divorce is going to be. A loss at USC and retirement will be announced next week. A win means he will try to hold on and it will get ugly.

Dr. Spiva had me convinced I was on a Spaceship and Wild Bill was convinced a boat load of girls were on their way to the Congo. I think Naffy may have come back on that boat. I had the same lit Professor, saw him dancing on top of a table at the Strohaus during the Worlds Fair.

We haven't had much luck against teams form L.A. lately, hopefully this Lower Alabubba team will be a cakewalk.

Yes, Wild Bill Cherry for Economic Geography. Did he really say "What's your hurry girls the boat don't leave til tomorrow?" I think it was Urban Legend.

Must be a real slow day in the news room. We get a paragraph 2 story about a team that doesn't exist, except on paper, at this point and how the Vols will play them 5 years from now.
One year we played GA for our homecomming game. Just another step towards blandness and staying average. Maybe we should just play South AL instead of Auburn and UAB instead of the real Univ. of Alabama.
In schools they call this dumbing down to make you look better.

khelton657 writes:

The thought of Trooper Taylor coming back scares me. One of Fulmer's problems was that he was a "Players Coach", something Taylor also seeems to be and that appears to mean he makes no demands of his players, everything done is fine, we still love you even though you continue to screw up, , they always love the person who makes no demands on them, never disciplines them, that way they love you.

He was passionate though..something you never see from a very un-dynamic Fulmer.....

Wow, what a contest this will be---or perhaps not if Vols play like they do this year.

Hey Mike, since we can't beat major teams, why not add Carson-Newman and Tusculum to the list? We might go 3-9!

Yes, he said it. I took his class. He said this during his last year...just before retirement. He was a hoot!

This is the kind of game the Vols should be playing in non-conference. Not a 1-AA team. But not a BCS conference team either.

Cherokee writes:

In my opinion, this game is about helping out a program that might one day be able to make recruiting good players in Alabama tougher for the Tide. UT would no doubt benefit from UAB and South Alabama turning into decent programs that can steal away some good players from Bama. The problem is, I don't think it will ever happen. UAB has been playing for several years now, and they have stunk almost the entire time. No player that Bama wants ends up at UAB, and I don't see any reason that South Alabama will be any different. It's a commuter campus much like UAB, with a very small fan base and not much of a student campus life. I just don't see either program ever being a threat to Auburn or Bama in in-state recruiting.

Huh? Who? South Alabama?

Oh well...should be a pretty good game.

stormblast writes:

Hamilton, please don't sign Sewanee to play us. I live not too far from the campus. I don't think I can balance a season where I get to listen to snobby, little rich preppies rubbing a win over the Vols in my face, only then to continue trying to comprehend the idiotic slack-jawed yokels from Alabama just across the borderline chanting "WE BEAT THE VAWS!"

I can't imagine it. The sweaters around the neck, clean teeth, kackies, and loafers one week. Later, the shirtless, toothless, mindless, shoeless morons from Bama. It would be too much.
