Five Big Things: To beat South Carolina

1. Keep The Faith: While the results haven’t been good, Tennessee’s players should be commended for finding a way to bring energy to the field week after week. That only gets tougher with each loss, but it’s more important now than ever. If the Vols are going to make anything happen in their last four games, they’ve got to continue to play with intensity. If that begins to wane, the season could really get ugly.

2. Chuck It: If Tennessee is going to have a chance, it needs to find some plays in the passing game. Lately, the run is simply unreliable. UT has been most effective moving the ball in two-minute situations this season, and perhaps a throw-first approach might help soften up Carolina’s run defense.

3. No Cookin’: South Carolina has plenty of talent at receiver. But tight end Jared Cook is the Gamecocks’ leading receiver. Strongside linebacker Nevin McKenzie will likely be the guy charged with handling the 6-foot-5 junior. If Tennessee is going to win, they will have to keep tabs on Cook.

4. Pick-A-Back: UT’s tailback rotation simply isn’t working. It’s been hard for Arian Foster, Montario Hardesty or Lennon Creer to develop a rhythm only getting a few carries each early. So far, no one has gotten hot — or even really had a chance to. Whoever coaches decide to start needs more than three or four carries to get in the groove — if that’s possible.

5. Get Red: UT’s offense isn’t productive enough to squander scoring chances inside the 20-yard line. Without a big, physical receiver, the Vols must find a little more creativity in the red zone like they did last week on a 10-yard screen to Josh Briscoe that went for six points.

I would suggest -

A. Tackle somebody

B. Tackle some more closer than 9-14 yards off the line of scrimmage.

C. Throw downfield more than twice a game

D. Recruit some speedy WRs who can seperate

E. After the speedy WRs are here throw the ball to them.

That is all.

I say they need to get some seperation with the wideouts vs. SC DB's. Ainge made the best of what he had last year but Taylor Brisco and Rogers aren't getting it done right now. I say let Denarius Moore start...He always gets seperation and its usually down field on vertical plays. They need to play for turnovers on Defense and that just doesn't mean only Berry...The rest of the defense needs to make something happen

I've been wondering for the past few weeks now if UT should try a hurry-up approach on offense. They have moved the ball very well in several of those situations this season. Lord knows they aren't winning time of possession battles anyway, so it's not like it would wear the defense out anymore than normal.

It doesn't really matter who is running the ball for UT right now. For the most part, horrible blocking is the problem. Hardesty does give the team a nice spark though.

I agree...u got D moore with only like 8 catches but averages like 25 yards a catch??????????????????? Mystery...and is Ahmad Paige really that slender and behind that we can't try to use that speed we recruited him for????? We've truly got nothing to lose and They are just waiting on fulmer to finish this season. 1. Anticipate what the defense would do in the situation you're up against. You can do this by watching film, or even using common sense. Or ask Chavis what he'd do.

2. Before you take the snap, look at the defense.

3. If the defense you see looks like it'll stop the run, then you call what's called an "Audible" to a different play.

4. Expand your run selection to include a selection broader than 2-3 plays.

5. Wipe clueless look off your face, at least when the cameras are on you up in the press box.

For all this I will charge no fee. Thank me afterwards.

I don't think even the most optimistic of the optimists believe that Fulmer will survive 6-6.

Am I the only one who finds that a bit difficult to digest?

Player development must follow recruiting as night follows day. It's never happened under Fulmer.

My wife may not know a lot about football x and o's but she made a statement to me recently that really summed up the offense to me. She leaned over to me after the first five minutes of the second half against Bama and said, "Having to watch this offense is like having to take really bad tasting medicine. Do we have to stay? " This is from a woman who never wants to leave early no matter what. We live in South Carolina and I am not looking forward to hearing the "shamecocks" crow over our demise. But hope is always there and maybe Berry, Morley et al can get a td or two and pull this one out for their buddies on offense.

I know how she feels. It's downright painful.

Many of my friends (football fans but not UT fans) now tell me how sorry they are about the Vols. Now that hurts. I'd rather have hate than pity.

lomas98 writes:

The revolving door at RB is just as bad as switching QB's every series. The problem is they want to get all three in the game but with the offense stalling they can't. They are forcing the issue to guarantee all three play. They need to have some drives to keep the clock moving, move the ball, get more than 1 first down and then rotate as a change of pace. Each RB thinks they must pop a big run in order to stay and they are not seeing the running lanes. The poor running game now just magnifies our inept QB play. If we had any passing game it would loosen up the box to hit some running plays.

Great post! It's like you read my mind.

Many of the reader responses to this article are way more creative than the UT football staff or the KNS writers are.

The whole article is kind of mute as in who cares if they even do beat SC anyway. The season, like the 2005 recruiting class, is a bust overall even if they were to even win out.

The next two Headlines I want to see this year are Fulmer Retires Early and UT hires piss excellence national powerhouse coach.

I'll go one better than that. Use a 4 receiver set and add Berry to the mix. Let Berry and Warren slant in a crossing pattern short middle and the the other two go long.
If USC goes 8 in the box there is no way they can cover this pattern.

1. Run some plays Spurrier is NOT expecting
2. RBs: Gain ground with downs and distance enough to stick it in the checkerboard
3. Keep your head out of your rear end enough to NOT give away 15 yard chunks of penalties
4. OLine: Hold off the Gamehens long enough to give Nick time to NOT get clobbered 3 and out
5. Hit them hard enough to put some legitimate fear into their noggins
6. Receivers: Come get the ball and run the thing into the endzone instead of tippy-toeing around like a bunch of ballerinas
7. Coach: Use the right man for the situation, let your assistants call the game, and play to win

These are the same things that have gotten us beat week in and week out. If we can take care of the 7 points mentioned, good things will happen.
