McMahan has arthroscopic knee surgery

Lady Vols call it 'a clean-up job'

Cait McMahan and her right knee are back on Tennessee’s injury report.

The women’s basketball guard underwent an athroscopic procedure Wednesday to address lingering discomfort in the knee. Jenny Moshak, the Lady Vols’ associate athletics director for sports medicine, expects McMahan to be ready when preseason practice begins on Oct. 17.

“Cait had been experiencing some discomfort in the knee and conservative treatments did not address the problems,’’ Moshak said in a release. “Today’s scope eliminated some loose bodies, smoothed out joint surface irregularities and addressed a small lateral meniscus tear. Her rehab will begin immediately and we’ll evaluate her knee day-to-day.”

The surgical procedure was performed by Dr. Russ Betcher and Dr. Greg Mathien, UT team orthopaedists.

McMahan, a 5-foot-4 redshirt sophomore, sat out last season following surgery on June 6, 2007, to repair a lesion on the articular cartilage in her right knee.

She underwent an arthoscopic procedure before her freshman season after landing awkwardly in a pick-up game and suffering a bone bruise. Her knee acted up during the season, impacting her play and curtailing some of her practice work.

McMahan suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee on Nov. 29, 2005, during her senior season at Heritage High.

With McMahan out, both of UT’s projected point guards for this season are on the mend. Freshman Briana Bass is recovering from offseason ACL surgery and making good strides. She took part in Tuesday’s individual workouts.
