SEC matchup for Thursday
South Carolina (1-0, 0-0 SEC) at Vanderbilt (1-0, 0-0)
Time: 8:30 p.m. TV: ESPN.
The Skinny: The Gamecocks are focused on avoiding back-to-back losses to the Commodores. Vandy won 17-6 last season, snapping a seven-game losing streak to South Carolina. The Gamecocks started slow last week, looking sloppy on offense and still managed a convincing 34-0 victory against North Carolina State. Vandy opened with a 34-13 victory against Miami (Ohio).
Key players: Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier has put his quarterback carousel in motion with Chris Smelley returning as the starter against Vandy. Smelley was a bright spot against N.C. State (5-for-5, 92 yards, two TDs), but was yanked in last season’s Vandy game after throwing two interceptions. Commodores’ QB Chris Nickson proved he’s healthy again, earning SEC Player of the Week honors with 166 yards rushing, two TDs and one passing TD.
Line: South Carolina by 10.
