UT to play UConn in football (not women's basketball)
Tennessee announced plans Thursday for a two-game series against Connecticut beginning in 2015.
That’s football, not women’s basketball.
The Vols will travel to East Hartford on Sept. 26, 2015 and host UConn in Knoxville on Sept. 3 to open the 2016 season.
Despite UConn and Tennessee’s rivalry in women’s basketball — now discontinued in the regular season — the Vols and Huskies have never met on the football field.
“This adds another quality opponent from a BCS conference, gives our fans a great travel destination and also puts us back in the northeast, continuing our tradition of playing different regions of the country,” UT athletic director Mike Hamilton said in a statement.
The Vols, who have played regular season games against Rutgers, Miami (Fla.), Notre Dame, UCLA, California and Syracuse in recent years, will face at least one team from the other four BCS conferences between now and 2018, when the Vols host Ohio State.
