Oku to wait on college commitment

Running back David Oku from Carl Albert High School in Midwest City, Okla., will not make his college announcement today as he previously planned.

The Oklahoman reported that Oku will likely wait until October when his father, Bo Oku, returns home from serving in Iraq.

Tennessee had been in the mix with Oku but seems to have faded recently.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Oku also is considering Louisville, Michigan and Nebraska.

“Tennessee somewhat, but not that much though,” Oku told the News Sentinel last week.

Whats up? I thought this kid was a lock? Where is SAVAGE when you need him? OH YEAH 1st

dang

pabashia#208095 writes:

It's called the "SUCKAGE factor"

After the Vols get their a** handed to them this season, a lot of kids will mark TN off their list.

TommyJack writes:

Maybe a win over FL would promote Unsuckage.

rockydog writes:

No surprise here. It is sad that he seemed like a lock but is reconsidering. UT's play in the first two games plus the perception that Fulmer's fanny is on the hot seat is going to make recruits considering UT think again. Who would want to commit into that type uncertainity? I hope we get it together and start playing better, or we are in for a whole lot of this. I hope this kid will come on to UT anyway. Even in our depressed state, I think we match up with the other schools he seems to be considering. Come to UT Oku. Redshirt your first year, and then you'll be the man.
GO VOLS!! Shock the nation and beat those Gators!

ibvolman writes:

One could call it the "Suckage" factor. Not sure that fits in this case. It is true that a good number of recruits want to play on successful teams that actually win games. They want to play for the powerhouse programs, and UT has definitely faded in that area over the past 8 years.

With that being said, Louisville, Michigan, and Nebraska aren't exactly powerhouse teams as of late. Nebraska has won all of its games to date, but who have they really played? Western Michigan? San Jose State? New Mexico State? Didn't Lousville lose to KY? And ND killed Michigan!

It just might be that UT has great backs like Hardesty, Creer, and Poole already in line. And part of the equation is the perception that UT doesn't always play its best talent on the roster. How many have called for Hardesty over Foster, or Stevens over Crompton, or Warren (Freshman All American from FSU) over our other "I can't catch a pass" TE. Last year from the get go I was saying why not play Gerald Jones and make him a factor in the game instead of Austin Rogers.

Good players don't want to go to a school where they could possibly ride the bench for 3 seasons while lesser talent plays in front of them, not that I am saying our current backs are not talented, because they are very good backs. I'm just pointing out a possible percieved notion that may be playing into the equation.

TNfaninMS ,

I think the fact that drama was taken out of it w/ all the talk he was Tennessee silent that he decided to wait.I haven't heard anything has changed as far as how he feels about the Vols. And he is still slated to be at the game Saturday so........Kinda reminds me of what Brandon McGee did.A week before he commited to the Canes he actually had said he was no longer considering them.

Plus this statement doesn't make sense to me.

“Tennessee somewhat, but not that much though,” Oku told the News Sentinel last week.

Was there a question and if so what was it?

Also, after his visit last weekend Terry Shanckle , whom also holds offers from Bama, UF, and Clemson as well, has added us to his top 3 along w/ NC & NC St.

thesavageorange writes:

Shankle ,sorry. The abc police hide in trees.

I've heard that this may be just a ploy by Oku. Isn't he visiting Knoxville this weekend? Not sure if the Vols are out of the mix just yet. He supposedly is coming to K-town with Gerald Jones mother. I Read this on another teams board. Take it for what its worth. Where is Savage when you need him? Let us know what's up with this kid and other recruits!

TommyJack writes:

Savage: You get my email re Holtz?

thesavageorange writes:

TJ, I just read it.Do you want me to shoot an e-mail back or give you an answer on here?

Voldawg, scroll up.

TommyJack writes:

Here is cool, Savage...Just want your opinion.
Tired of all this Skippy stuff.

I think Oku is basking in the attention and drama surrounding his recruitment. That's fine. It only comes around once so he might as well enjoy it. He's a heck of a back and I hope he picks us over those other scrubs on his list.

Come to Tennessee Oku where you will play against the best competition in the country and really be prepared for the next level.

thesavageorange writes:

From what I have read & understand they are lower.Plus they don't require some of the extra core courses that some of the top level BCS conferences require.(ala Gerald Williams)If I'm not mistaken the requirements are very similar to the Western Athletic Conference whos requirements allowed Rolondo Melancoln,a UT commit that didn't fully qualify here, to be fully eligible right away.It can also vary some from school to school ,but each conference has certain mandatory requirements for athletics. This benifits Holtz more so than the other schools in C-USA b/c someone was smart enough to schedule BCS opponents that would get them on TV and help him woo some very good ,what I would call, questionable qualifiers not necesarily partial.Everyone wants to play yesterday if you know what I mean.

It's the typical flavor of the month TJ.Where are all the Greg Schiano supporters.Rutgers gets it handed to them twice at home, has 4 or 5 players de-commit over the last month and "poof" their gone.I think folks should let him pad his resume a little more before annointing Holtz the next up & comer.

SavageO...Just read on rivals that we seem to be the team to beat for Moses & Bonds. Any news on your end?

TommyJack writes:

Savage. thanks. very informative.

thesavageorange writes:

gobigorange , that's the word.I think we land both. Both were floored on their visits and the renevations weren't even done yet.Moses will be here this weekend on another unnoficial visit. They both want to leave the state but neither want to stray too far and Tennessee is the closest of the schools they have at the top. They have both said in the past that their family getting to see them play was important.

TJ, no problem.

I know a few of you have sent me e-mails.I appologize if I haven't gotten to them yet, but I will soon.

thesavageorange writes:

Ooops.I'm gonna get arrested any time now. It's renovations and unofficial.

thesavageorange writes:

And apologize.Ahhh, who cares.

jmbigorange#280428 writes:

Savage...Hopefully we'll be able to land White too. Can you imagine what our running game will look like with Moses & White and the RBs we have!
