Tennessee has to stop the run to stay in the game against Florida this afternoon.
But don’t get the wrong idea. I’m not referring to the runs of Tim Tebow or Percy Harvin.
I’m referring to the runs that have characterized this series. And Florida has made every one of them.
In 1994, Florida scored 31 unanswered points in the first half. Its 31-0 halftime lead was the same as the final score.
In 1995, UT was sailing along with a 30-14 lead when Florida reeled off 48 consecutive points.
A year later, the Gators scored the first 35 points. And they did it in about 20 minutes.
The Gators even had a run under coach Ron Zook. In 2002, after a scoreless first quarter, they outscored UT 24-0 in the second quarter.
Florida waited until the third quarter to begin its charge last season. After the Vols cut Florida’s lead to 28-20, the Gators scored the next 31 points.
Florida 24, UT 20: Gators linebacker Brandon Spikes said he thought the Vols quit during the course of last year’s rout. UT fans should hope he’s right.
Imagine if the Vols had played as hard as they could for 60 minutes and still lost by 39 points.
Last year’s Florida loss should serve as a great motivator for the Vols. So should their opening-season loss to UCLA.
In one afternoon, they have a chance to prove both games were an aberration.
LSU 5, Auburn 4: First-year Auburn defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads says he’s not worried about his team’s offense.
Of course, he isn’t worried. Auburn’s offense is making him look like the smart coordinator in town.
Auburn’s defense is good. It’s not good enough to score three safeties.
Georgia 27, Arizona State 24: How tough is the Bulldogs’ schedule?
They play at South Carolina, then travel across country to take on the Sun Devils, and play ninth-ranked Alabama a week later. And that’s not even the tough part of their schedule.
After that, the Bulldogs still will have LSU on the road, UT in Athens, Florida in Jacksonville, and Auburn on the road – all in a six-week stretch without an open date.
Alabama 27, Arkansas 13: Hurricane Ike actually worked to the Razorbacks’ advantage last week. When the Arkansas-Texas game was postponed, it gave the Hogs an extra week to prepare for the Tide.
Unfortunately for Arkansas, natural disasters can take you only so far.
Ole Miss 27, Vanderbilt 24: The Commodores have won three consecutive games. You know what that means.
They’re due to lose an agonizingly close game in the final minute.
Georgia Tech 9, Mississippi State 4: If Bill Walsh were alive, he would file a suit against Mississippi State for what it’s done to his West Coast offense.
Mississippi State’s defense is good. It’s not good enough to score five safeties.
South Carolina 37, Wofford 10: If you are bored by the increased passing proficiency in college football, you might consider spending the evening at Williams-Brice Stadium. The run-oriented Terriers have thrown only 17 passes this season, and the Gamecocks have thrown seven interceptions to the tune of the “Spurrier Quarterback Shuffle.”
Top 25: Missouri 52, Buffalo 20; Texas 45, Rice 20; Texas Tech 48, Massachusetts 13; South Florida 41, Florida International 7; Ohio State 38, Troy 17; BYU 42, Wyoming 17; East Carolina 24, N.C. State 20; Penn State 37, Temple 13; Oregon 34, Boise State 27; Florida State 23, Wake Forest 20; Kansas 45, Sam Houston State 13; Utah 34, Air Force 23; Clemson 48, South Carolina State 10; Fresno State 31, Toledo 17.
Record: 60-10 (.857) overall; 23-30 (.434) against the spread.

I thought he was talking about a stomach virus. I was going to suggest Dr. Tebow take care of Florida's problem with the runs while taking a break from circumcisions.

Check this video out: it's the University of Alabama "Buck and a Quarter" Band's pregame pump-up video. Except at the 14 second mark - it ain't Bama, baby! It is THE Priiiiiiiiiiiiiide of the Southland Marching Band doing THE Tennessee Circle Drill. Freakin hilarious.
Maybe next Kentucky will start using our football players for their season ending highlight reel.....
Enjoy, posters!

Thanks John for another great piece of work. Spikes is not the only opponent who has stated that Tennessee players quit over the past few years. Maybe if Foolmurr and The Beef Chavis played to win instead of not to lose, the guys might give a full effort for 60 minutes.

This is all good information, just some more stats though, and i have heard all of them i want to this week. How about this- why don't the Big Orange go out there tomorrow with a 'take no prisoners' attitude and just play their rear ends off for 60 minutes, I'll bet something good can happen, Florida is good , but they are not great!!! Rah rah ree kickem in the knee, rah rah rass kickem the other knee. Go vols.

We'll see how bad our Vol footballers want it tomorrow.
I'd like nothing more than to see the shocked stare that's on Urban Meyer's face whenever UF is in a tight game.
Will it happen?

This is a bunch of useless facts. When we run through the T this saturday and you feel the electricity run through the stadium stats go out the window. This is Florida week. Its time to reclaim the glory of Neyland Stadium. Go Vols!!! I wanna hear Rocky Top 100 times on Saturday. Vols by 1 point.

All of us real Gators are expecting a very close game tomorrow. Florida is a very young team and Fulmer needs a win to save his job. This is a great opportunity for UT to beat Florida. Based on how young Florida is and how Meyer recruits, if UT does not win tomorrow, it may be several years before UT beats the Gators. The bad thing for UT is that I have friends on the UF coaching staff and they say that Florida had a great week of practice and are focused on UT. They also said that for the first time this year, Harvin practiced at full speed and no one could cover him.

The one "run" Adams left out:
In 2001, UF scored 20 consecutive points in the second quarter after falling behind 14-0.

1) The game is tomorrow, dilweed
2) It was a season-opening loss, not an opening-season loss
It's a shame I have to do the editor's job. Maybe I'll get one of those cool media awards like John Adams this year...

New post format should delete comments that mention "1st" - Is this Nickelodeon.com?
I'm tired of the crazy multi-scoring runs FL has had against us since the mid 90's. Too many games where there are a storm of un-answered points. It's time to hit hard and zero in and let the points fall where they may. We will win this game easily at home if we bust them in the mouth, down after down. It's all about intimidation in this series, and far too often we've played four-legged with our tails between our legs and our heads down in submission.

You'd do good to keep a fine tuned sense of humor, John Adams, your arrogance has offended many a fine UT fan and supporter. You are living on borrowed time here, living on building a reputation based on our demise(a UT win is a threat to your credability)> I(we) don't hate you, any more than you hate us. You and the guys at ESPN etc, news casters think you have to be prognosticators for some reason??? Like you are some authority and know it all. Most or our posters make better sense when they try and are just as much fun to read as you were(are). Sportswriters and newspeople are the only business where the customer is ignorant and you guys are the authorities. The last word. I just don't know how to get rid of you and beat Florida at the same time.

Hoped you stayed in Gainesville. No such luck. Must be paying better in the Newspaper field if Adams can have a Orange Leather Jacket. Helps him stand out in certain unnamed bars he frequents.

Someone put some Laxatives in Tebow's pregame drink so HE will have the runs and can't quit.

I'd say boycott Big Orange Tent and Awning but I think that is where Adidas buys the coach's outfits each year so they are flush with cash.
Every year I halfway expect to see some story about how the Vols' coaches were scared by their doctors into losing a hundred pounds each.
But every year it is another testimonial to Krispy Kreme and Stefano's Pizza.
volunteer_cowboy writes:
TENNESSEAN: Fulmer's 15-year record against second-tier SEC East teams Vanderbilt, South Carolina and Kentucky is 43-2. The game has changed. Fulmer's coaching resumé was padded when the SEC coaching landscape was much different. He beat up on Georgia's Ray Goff and Jim Donnan, both in recruiting and on the field. He had Mike DuBose's number when he headed the program at Alabama. Against the current SEC coaching competition, Fulmer's record is just 28-26. And in matchups with the five SEC coaches who have won national championships or had an unbeaten season — Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, Les Miles, Steve Spurrier and Tommy Tuberville — Fulmer is a combined 10-19.

vol cowboy 7:14 - don the kevlar. 10 of 29 is still good enuf for many supporters of Phil.
As one article said, the getting fat on Ray Goff and the Donnans, etc. of the SEC world is long gone.
Go Vols, play your very best and punt the ball out of bounds.
