Lady Vols start strong in SEC volleyball

The Tennessee volleyball team opened SEC play with consecutive victories for the first time in four years, beating Alabama 25-17, 25-18, 24-26, 25-18 Sunday at Thompson-Boling Arena.

"Winning our first two SEC matches is huge for our team,'' UT coach Rob Patrick said. "It is a testament to how our players have really bounced back from our play in Denver a couple of weeks ago."

Patrick was referring to Tennessee's three losses at the Pioneer Classic. Since then, the Lady Vols (7-4, 2-0 SEC) have won four of five matches.

"I was very proud of how we stuck to our game plan in games one, two and four and how we defended Alabama in the transition game,'' Patrick said.

Junior Kylie Marshall set a career high with 14 kills, tying Milan Clarke for team high against Alabama (7-4, 0-2). Marshall also had 12 digs, recording her second double-double of the season.

"Kylie has been filling up the stat sheet a little bit more than we thought she would offensively,'' Patrick said. "She has been working diligently on a couple of new shots to diversify her attack a bit more. She also has been a stabilizing force for our defense and passing with her consistent ball-handling skills."

Women's Tennis: The UT doubles team of Rosalia Alda and Jennifer Meredith won on the final day of the Virginia Invitational, beating the Virginia team of Emily Fraser and Claire Bartlett, 9-7.

Lady Vol Samantha Orlin beat Virginia's Jennifer Stevens in singles.
