Helton to visit back specialist; surgery is possible

Colorado Rokies first baseman Todd Helton, sidelined since July 3 because of lower back problems, will fly to Los Angeles on Wednesday to be examined by Dr. Robert Watkins, a back specialist, the Rocky Mountain News has learned. Surgery is a possibility to alleviate the problems created by the ruptured disk.

The former University of Tennessee star came off the disabled list a week ago and has pinch hit twice, but for the third time in his rehab he has had the problem flare up, prompting the decision to send him to Watkins, who has looked at Helton’s medical records but hasn’t seen him in person.

The feeling is the surgery would only be minimally invasive and if done before too long, Helton would have ample time to rehab and be ready for the start of next season.

Trainer Keith Dugger said he will accompany Helton on his visit to Watkins.

Todd Helton is a great player and rep. for UT. Now back to football. I thank Phillip Fulmer for what he did for us (did past tense) but it is time to move on. I want to start a grass roots campaign. I live in North Carolina unfortunately but I do get to see a candidate, I would like to push, often. Butch Davis can recruit and coach. I think we could get him. What do you guys think.

I was not trying to suggest he still plays for UT just that he is a great player in MLB and a great rep. for UT as well.

Some of you guys just like to see your stuff in print. The article was about Todd Helton, and had nothing to do with Fulmer or UT football. Shut up and stay with the subject - if you can.
