Cunningham finally kicks into gear

AUBURN, Ala. - A concern at the beginning of the season, Tennessee punter Chad Cunningham found his game in the second half Saturday against Auburn.

There's no pinning UT's 14-12 loss on Cunningham, who averaged 39.9 yards per punt and dropped three punts inside the five-yard line in the second half.

"A loss is a loss," Cunningham said. "It's not an individual sport, it's a team sport."

Cunningham, who is filling in for senior Britton Colquitt during a five-game suspension, said he wasn't pleased with his play in the first half. Cunningham complimented his coverage team for overcoming some directional punts that weren't so directional.

Then, he challenged himself to make an impact. The opportunity was certainly present given the defensive nature of the game.

"I knew that if we were going to have a chance in the second half, I had to step up my game," Cunningham said. "I had to make up my mind that a punter could very easily win the game."

That's a vast improvement for Cunningham, who already had a punt blocked and returned for a touchdown against UCLA and a punt returned for a TD by Florida.

"It (Saturday) definitely helps my confidence," Cunningham said.

Injury Report: Defensive end Wes Brown left the game in the first quarter favoring his right leg. Brown has been wearing a brace on his right knee for most of the past month but wasn't wearing it during Saturday's game.

Brown said he's not sure if he'll be able to play on Saturday against Northern Illinois, but said his knee is stable based off an early prognosis.

Brown said he wasn't hit on the knee. He said it's weak from an injury suffered against UCLA on Sept. 1

"It's sore," Brown said. "I'm going to battle through it and do whatever I can to keep myself on the field."

Linebacker Ellix Wilson suffered a shoulder injury late in the fourth quarter. No prognosis was available.

The Beginning at End: Converted linebacker Gerald Williams entered the game at defensive end for the first time in his career midway through the third quarter.

It didn't take Williams long to make an impact.

The junior college transfer registered a tackle on his second play, then was called for a personal foul for a hit out of bounds on the next play.

Williams, who played left and right defensive end, then made a tackle on the following play.

Arian Ascension: With 35 yards against Auburn, tailback Arian Foster is 416 yards shy of becoming UT's all-time leading rusher.

Foster passed Cedric Houston for fifth on the list.

That's not the only mark Foster has in sight.

Since Jay Graham started 24 straight games at tailback, no running back has come close to that mark, until now. Foster started his 18th straight.

If he holds onto the starting job, he'll hit 25 on Nov. 22 at Vanderbilt.

No G-Run: Receiver Gerald Jones ran for 35 yards out of the G-Gun offensive package, in which Jones lines up at quarterback. Jones broke free for a 23-yard run in the second quarter.

The Vols finally threw a pass out of the formation but it was dropped by Lucas Taylor on a screen pass.

Ten Isn't Enough: Five plays prior to a touchdown, Auburn converted a third-and-6 when Tennessee only had 10 defenders on the field. The 11th sprinted on the field but too late as Chris Todd found Robert Dunn for a 14-yard gain to the 27.

"Coach tried to run the Mustang package but we didn't get enough guys in,'' said safety Eric Berry.

Lincoln Goes Long: Kicker Daniel Lincoln nearly matched his career long with a 47-yard field goal against Auburn. Lincoln's career long is a 48-yarder last season against South Carolina.

Rangy Walker: Backup defensive end Chris Walker recorded his first tackle for a loss as a Vol when he hauled in receiver Robert Dunn for a 10-yard loss. Dunn was attempting to throw downfield after receiving a reverse handoff.

Creer: Capitalizing on tailback Lennon Creer’s speed was clearly part of the game plan against Auburn.

Creer played early and throughout, catching a pass for nine yards and registering four carries for 19 yards.

Special Guest: Former UT quarterback Peyton Manning was in attendance. Manning spent much of pre-game warm-ups visiting with quarterback Jonathan Crompton. Manning's NFL team, Indianapolis, is off this week.

Crompton is Awful. He is not very accurate at all. He was throwing the ball 10 yards out of bounds. The blown plays were way too frequent!!!!!! hopefully he get his act together or we run the G gun exclusively. Today was the day and we let it slip away!!!

Good thing cunningham came thru or phil woulde have to replace him. punter is the most important player on the team. I'll drink to that

If foster hangs onto his starting job we will be 1-11 very quickly. Go Arian

Only two more losses and milky has to fire phil

Go Vols

The late hit call on GW was BS. Glad to see GW out there. Was that his only series?

The "collaring" is equal to "facemask" is a stupid rule.

Did anyone else notice the play clock run to zero early in the first quarter, reset to 40 before Auburn snapped the ball but no call by the officials or the commentators?

Personally i hate the 40second clock. Seems weird to me. I'd hate to be the teams which have to play us if and when we get it together this year. Guy just couldn't hit a pass if you paid him. How many games are we going to have to lose breaking this kid in?

Keep playing Cunningham, Colquitt should've been kicked from the team in the first place. Any offense as a punter and you should be gone, especially a DUI.

I gotta hand it to you WELOVE, at least you have the guts to come on here and at least not say,"it's only a game." Did you hear UF and AU fans booing today...just classless. LOL

WHY DOES JOHNATHAN CROMPTON HAVE A SECURE SPOT!! He has done absolutely nothing to earn it, and plenty to lose it! He is THE worst Tennessee QB I have seen in MY lifetime! 8/23 for 67 yrds and 0 td's with TO's left and right in every game! The only thing he is supposedly good at is the deep ball..and he's 0-who knows how many on them, it's either over thrown out of bounds, or a miscommunication! PLEASE TRY ANOTHER QB!! If it were me, and I wish it was, I would go solely to the G-GUN! The options are endless with this package!
If your not going to finish the season with some wins, at least try some new things and change it up! GO VOLS

Is it true that it's so bad in Knoxville that the Golden Corrals refuse to serve Fulmer and Chavis?

Our defense played a good game..Gave up one touchdown
All we needed was one or two first downs on about three tries and we kick a field goal. Hope Peyton told coach his Q.B. is not a Tenn. or SEC Q.B.

Do you mean the one where GW hit him out of bounds? I thought that call was valid. Why hit someone who's going out of bounds anyway?

I also saw the play clock expire on Auburn with no call by the refs.

It's really Crompton behind the mask.

It's hard to believe that Arian Foster is poised, record-wise, to become one of the greatest running backs in UT history. They don't list fumbles in the online stats at utsports.com, but I'm guessing he would be No. 1 all time in that. Granted, in "looking at the video" (as Fulmer is wont to say) that bone-headed fumble yesterday was Crompton's fault all the way (you're supposed to shove the ball into the running back's midsection; Crompton held the ball out and dropped it, hoping it would fall into Foster's hands), but it's eerie how many times Foster has been involved in fumbles, whether he was directly responsible or not.

Running 99 yards is great, but if you fumble on the 1 all those yards don't mean a hill of beans. I can't see many Vol fans rooting for Foster to break the all-time-yardage and number-of-games-played records. Maybe he can break the record for most games spent on the bench by a supposed first-stringer. I sincerely hope that Arian is buckling down in the classroom, as no pro team is going to be touching him even with a 10-foot (yard?) pole with his questionable ball-handling skills.

Hamilton HAS to go with PF! Awful in all respects....even scheduling stinks....who came up with play a game, take a week off before mighty UAB came to town, then play 8-9 straight against heart of SEC??? Notice that top tier teams have week off before playing UT...but of course UT is quickly becoming like UAB so maybe by next year that will look "stupid" for them too!

Book it that Phil will run Foster 40 times vs NIU Siwash next Sat. He wants Fumblin Foster to get that record.

In Aaron's defense, that fumble at Aubie should be blamed partially on Rogan for letting that punt roll.

No $$$ spent on PPV this year.

Exactly, even the scheduling stinks..I want to know who in the "working like heck" is at the controls of VOL football?

Your right pdhuff. Rogan was horrible. Jones was great handling punts after that. Now just change QB and play Creer and we will be headed in a better direction. (That is until Fulmer is fired). Also keep playing Cunningham all year. Don't reward Colquitt by immediately giving him his job back. His suspension was part of the reason we lost to UCLA & FL.
