Tennessee has a quarterback battle on its hands.

UT coach Phillip Fulmer said Sunday evening that Jonathan Crompton and Nick Stephens will split practice reps with the first-team offense this week, and the player who is most consistent will start Saturday against Northern Illinois (TV: Pay-per-view, 7 p.m.).

Following Saturday's loss to Auburn, Crompton is 1-4 as UT's starting quarterback, including a 2006 start at Arkansas. On Saturday, Crompton was 8-for-23 for 67 yards, and the junior was 0-for-6 passing in the fourth quarter.

Stephens is 1-of-2 passing for 42 yards in his career. Both attempts came in the Vols' only win this season, a 35-3 victory in Neyland Stadium against UAB on Sept. 13.
