For 1 1/2 days, Florida football coach Urban Meyer swore that Ole Miss illegally blocked Florida's last extra point that gave the Rebels their 31-30 margin of victory last Saturday in Gainesville.
Meyer even sent a tape of Jonathan Phillips' attempt that was blocked by' Kentrell Lockett, to Rogers Redding, the SEC's supervisor of officials. He claimed that Lockett should have been penalized for hurdling the line to block the kick.
Finally on Monday, after looking several times at the play on tape, Meyer admitted that it was a blocking breakdown that caused the kick to be blocked.
Starting Florida left tackle Phil Trautwein had to line up at left guard on the extra-point team because Marcus Gilbert had left the game with a sprained left ankle earlier in the fourth quarter. Trautwein had not practiced at that spot, which is where the breakdown occurred, according to Meyer.
"Fundamentally we had an error in the protection," Meyer said. "We just worked all day (Sunday) on it. Not all day, but we had a very lengthy time to get that corrected."
Lockett said he stepped through the line and didn't hurdle.
"In the gap, the guard didn't step down and I took advantage of his mistake," Lockett said.
Meyer isn't backing off his claim that an Ole Miss player illegally hurdled the line, but he said it wasn't Lockett.
"One guy hurdled and one guy came through the line, and we did not protect it well enough," Meyer said. "It wasn't John. I don't think his kick was low."
Meyer said he complained to the officials earlier in the game about Ole Miss players hurdling players on kick attempts.
"It's illegal to hurdle a player to block a field goal and we warned (an official) early and they did it the whole game," Meyer said. "I grabbed the (official) on my sideline early in the game and I said, 'Listen, they're doing this,' and the guy made a comment that (Lockett) went through a gap. The way we teach field-goal protection, there should be no gaps."
Redding wasn't available for comment on Monday to deliver his opinion on the play.

Again ,like against us, he had his starting qb in until the end! OOPS, that was because he was behind in this one. What was his excuse for the previous week other than impress polsters and pad tebow numbers? What goes around comes around. Get me right here I take no delight in Florida losing. It at least mathematically keeps us in the race for the east for two more weeks.
Beat that NIU team VOLS!!!
ACG writes:
And if Urban had gone for the FG at the end of the first qtr, instead of going for first down - he wouldnt even have this problem. OR, if he'd gone for a FG w/ 41 secs left from what the 28? This wouldn't be a problem.
Thats why God invented the term "Take the Points."

Six and four in his last 10 SEC games (and two of those R Us). The boy genius had better worry about that figure rather than some guy jumping the line. Looked to me like the blocker dove for Lockett's ankles and he just jumped over him. What was the guy supposed to do---stand there and let the Florida lineman break his leg?
hallsguy writes:
Seems like the Vols lost a game to the Gators years ago when a last second pass in the end zone was "caught",excuse me,bounced off the shoulder pads of I think Jaquez Green. With the official standing right beside him.In other words the ball was not even close to being caught.Since that was before play review, the call stood.
Bottom line the Vols had their opportunities to win....
That's football.
And the best ref in the NFL has blown two calls.
That's football.
Get over it Urban Whiner.

It was 2001, Jabar Gaffney. Not that I hold a grudge or anything.

Florida won the NC because Tim Tebow was a change of pace quarterback from Chris Leak. Last year, Tebow put up freak numbers, but the Gators had no other offensive weapons. They may have more weapons this year, but they aren't distributing the ball as well and people are catching up to Tebow.
Now Urban is crying because his guy misses a block.

ACG, actually that was 2000 game. I remember because it was the last game I attended in Neyland and had seats in the north endzone where the play happened.
The 2001 game was delayed because of 9-11. It was Spurrier's last regular season game and Travis Stephen 226 yards in the UT win.

Yep, nobody is cheering louder for Fulmer to keep his job than Urban Meyer. Phil is one of the few coaches he can actually beat consistently.

I remember when Spurrier had our number like Meyer does now and we would jump on anything and everything we could to talk trash about him (because we definatly can't earn that right on the field). Just don't forget we are 0-4 against Meyer's Gators so we may not want comment too much on this.

VolnFlorida, the rule on hurdling is concise and vague:
"There shall be no hurdling (Exception: The runner may hurdle an opponent.)." from 2008 NCAA Football Rules and Interpretations (Conduct of Players and Others Subject the Rules Section 1, Article 2, subparagraph i).
No definition of what constitutes "hurdling". From DC's description, sounds like hurdling.
Bigger_Al writes:
That's not the one I'm thinking of. There was a time after a loss that he cried at the press conference. Was that an LSU game?
CoverOrange writes:
From the same manual:
"ARTICLE 1. It is a safety when:
a. The ball becomes dead out of bounds behind a goal line, except from an incompleted forward pass, or becomes dead in the POSSESSION OF A PLAYER ON, ABOVE or behind his own goal line, or becomes dead by rule, and the defending team is responsible for the ball being there."
This is different from the rule on scoring a TD which invokes a goal line plane.
Give us two points in the UCLA game. No whining.
abnermc writes:
DC, you need to face reality as we must. Meyer is a big disappointment. The best talent in the nation, speed, size, etc. & following the same pattern as last year. Four losses last year were inexcusable & your team is worse this year. Even our team moved the ball on you as bad as we are this year. The mistakes Fla made @ Ole Miss are the same ones we made against Fla. It probably means poor coaching for both but at least Fulmer has the excuse of lesser talent (QB no talent). Meyer's only excuse is illegal.

hallsguy writes:
The hurdling rule is meant that you cannot jump on a guys back to gain extra height in a field goal situation. If you can leap over a guy and or high enough without assistance, that is not hurdling. There is nothing that says a d-back cannot get a running start and time a leap to get high enough. The chance of getting caught offside pretty much discourages that.
The Ole Miss guy simply jumped over a guy who missed a block.
Florida lost because they did not execute.Same story for the Vols.End of discussion.
ggriggs939#223122 writes:
How many gifts does he expect (all he has paid for, of course)? He already had one given to him on the "incomplete pass" where the ole miss receiver's knee touched before he was said to have lost control of the ball.
Had the extra point not been blocked, that one play could have been significant.
Has urban lost his allure with the sec?

You guys got beat by the better team. Thanks to you guys and my keen wagering skills on Ole Miss winning straight up i made lots of money. Won that national championship you so highly covet two short years ago with Zookers hard earned recruits , when he does something on his own let me know , didnt he play in the SEC Championship last year , ohhhhh know , that was UT wasnt it. Is there a rule that UF is only allowed to hire world-class jerks and whiners to head coach their football team? Spurrior was the ultimate jerk. Zook the Kinkos Crook was obnoxious. Now we have the Urban Whiner who loves to run up the score on his rivals and who feels the need to blame his losses on things like poor officiating. Question: would any of these clowns be worth a dang in the SEC without the tremendous talent that just falls into their laps at UF? Obviously not Zook; the only guy he could beat while at UF was Fulmer. Obviously not SOS; he has failed miserably at USC. And what has the Whiner done? He won a NC but has gone downhill since then. Hmm, that sounds awfully familiar, doesn't it? Try to imagine what a coach like Saban could do with that UF talent. No, the Urban Whiner is a great coach only if compared to certified losers like Phil Fulmer.
BSweet writes:
DC- I'm not even going to reply to your anti-UT rhetoric because I see no point. It's obvious we are down right now and changes need to be made. As to the Ole Miss game, tough loss. But Urban needs to follow the advice he gives his players and act professional. No one likes to lose, but it happens. Instead of arguing how the other team "cheated", which isn't going to accomplish anything, accept it like a man and move on. Learn from it and make your team better. Griping to the press about it makes it look as if he's giving excuses instead of accepting responsibility. Trust me, we Vols have experience with a head coach like that. The true class act of the day was Tebow. I wish our qb would display even a quarter of the passion and disappointment that Tebow displayed after that game. Imagine Vol fans, a qb who apologizes to the fans after a poor game and vows to play better. We get a qb that sees nothing wrong and talks about how he only plays for his "football family". Sad. Anyway, I think UM just needs to let this go before he begins to look like a crybaby. This is the SEC. Take your lumps and move on.

Meyer still needs to show more class. Regardless of if a guy did something illegal or not, he should never act like he did at the handshake with Nutt. Put your emotions aside for a second and act like a man at least during the handshake. He acted like the little kid that someoen stole his cookies. DCFlorida fan mentioned all the other mistakes that cost them the game. He did not mention the inability of Tebow to throw consistently. Forget the numbers at games end because that number looks good because he completes 1 or 2 yard passes and lets his WR's do all the work. There was at least 4 occasions where he had big gains and could not complete the pass, one of those was a pass that could have won the game on their last posession. Tebow is a heck of a QB but is not, and never will be, a passer. Thus he better not be hoping for an NFL career.

Found it. From the same source as before but in the definitions section (duh).
"ARTICLE 1. a. Hurdling is an attempt by a player to jump with one or both feet or knees foremost over an opponent who is still on his feet (Exception: The runner) (Rule 9-1-2-i).
b. “On his feet’’ means that no part of the opponent’s body other than one or both feet is in contact with the ground.
c. Hurdling an offensive player before the snap is a dead-ball foul. This includes offensive players in a three- or four-point stance.
