Wingardh ties for medalist honors

Sophomore Robin Wingardh tied for medalist honors and the No. 6 Tennessee men's golf team finished second as the PING/Golfweek Preview Invitational at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

Wingardh shot 71 to finish at 6-under-par 207 for the tournament, tied with Oklahoma State's Morgan Hoffman.

As a team, the Vols shot an 8-over 292 in the final round, and finished with a team score of 7-over 859. Oklahoma State went wire-to-wire, beating UT by 16 strokes.

"We are very proud of the way our team played," UT coach Jim Kelson said. "It was a real solid performance. We were elated for Robin who played superbly."

Sophomore Cameron Lawrence (75) also finished in the top 10, tying for eighth at 212.

n The Tennessee women's track and field team open the indoor portion of its spring schedule, announced Tuesday, Jan. 16-17 at the Kentucky Invitational and is highlighted by a rare dual meet at Texas A&M (Jan. 24). Among key outdoor meets, the Lady Vols will participate in the Sea Ray Relay (April 8-11) and Volunteer Track Classic (Apr. 17-18) at Tom Black Track, and the Penn Relays in Philadelphia (April 23-25).

With a pair of victories in the qualifying singles draw, junior Caitlin Whoriskey advanced to the second day of the Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. She will play Chelsea Gullickson of Georgia today for an opportunity to move on to play in the main draw. Whoriskey, the tournament’s reigning doubles champion, will be unable to defend her title, however, as she and partner sophomore Maria Sorbello, ranked No. 33 in the nation, were defeated in the opening round by UCLA’s Yasmin Schnack and Ashley Joelson, 8-5.
