Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton said Wednesday that associate head basketball coach Tony Jones has interviewed for the top job at Boston University.
Jones, who confirmed that but did not want to comment further on the Boston job, said he interviewed Thursday with Boston University athletic director Mike Lynch.
The Boston Globe reported that Georgetown assistant Rob Burke and Villanova assistant Pat Chambers also interviewed for the job.
The hire could take place as early as this weekend, and other candidates might still be considered.
The Terriers’ job came open when Dennis Wolff was fired on March 11 after Boston University went 17-13 and finished third in the America East conference after being picked to win it at the start of the season.
Wolff spent 15 years with the Terriers and leaves as the program’s longest-tenured and winningest coach with a 247-197 record.
Jones, 48, was a finalist for the Marshall head coaching job two years ago and Tennessee State showed interest in him for its head coach opening last month.
Jones has served as coach Bruce Pearl’s top assistant the past eight seasons and is UT’s top paid basketball assistant coach with a salary of $182,434.
Prior to coaching with Pearl at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Jones spent five seasons at Toledo and three at Buffalo as an assistant coach.
Jones has spearheaded the Vols’ scheduling, handles substitutions during the games and shares in the recruiting duties.
