Pope's crusade: To help in any way

Cody Pope continues to find himself in Tennessee's first-team offensive line. However, it was a little different Tuesday.

After playing all of spring practice at right tackle, Pope got a tryout at right guard for the first time under Lane Kiffin's coaching staff.

Pope said he's more comfortable at tackle but has no complaints about the move.

"Whatever gets me on the field fastest and whatever is going to contribute to the team," the California native said. "I really don't have preference."

Pope has played the position before. In his career, the sophomore has played every position on the offensive line, defensive tackle and tight end.

Pope said he and his fellow UT offensive linemen believe that playing guard in Kiffin's offense is easier than tackle whereas playing tackle was considered more difficult in previous UT offenses.

Bang Award: Chris Walker delivered the most impressive hit of the day. Even though the Vols weren't in full-contact mode, the junior defensive end clobbered freshman tailback Toney Williams on a middle screen.

As usual, Walker also was one of the toughest defensive linemen to block during line drills.

Full-Go Fullback: Austin Johnson continues to be a go-to receiver this spring. The sophomore fullback made a nifty, one-handed catch on the sideline and another 40-plus-yard gain when he was left uncovered while he was lined up outside.

Rebel Rouser: Quarterback B.J. Coleman and receiver Tyler Maples appear to be developing a strong chemistry. With three connections, the two were a consistent combo during Saturday's scrimmage. Tuesday, Coleman overcame pressure to find Maples deep downfield for a 50-plus-yard gain.

Practice Report: Kiffin complimented his offense while criticizing his defense for no turnovers Tuesday. Kiffin said he was pleased with his offense's response to a drill that started the Vols near their own goal line.

Berry Good: Safety Eric Berry was named to the 2009 Lott Trophy Watch List. The award is named after former NFL star safety Ronnie Lott, who starred for the San Francisco 49ers.

The Watch List is made up of 42 of the nation's top defensive players. Players are judged on integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity, or I.M.P.A.C.T.

Berry was a semifinalist for the award last season when he was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore and a consensus All-American.

Schedule: UT will practice today and Friday before breaking for the weekend. The Vols will practice next Tuesday and Thursday before the Orange and White game April 18 at Neyland Stadium.
