Dennis Rogan returns a kick during a spring practice.

Last season, Tennessee cornerback Dennis Rogan started all 12 games. This spring, though, the junior isn't wondering about how many he'll start this fall.

Working with the second-team defense for most of the spring, Rogan can't help but wonder if he'll wind up starting at all.

"It's tough, because it's like you're thinking maybe you're not going to get to play this year," Rogan said. "It's only spring. You're still working. You're still trying to get everything down, learning everything. (So are) the people that's going in front of you or going behind you. So it's the same either way."

The former Fulton High School standout burst on the scene as a true freshman in 2007. Making his most significant impact in the return game, Rogan still worked heavily in the rotation at cornerback and played the majority of the SEC championship game there after Brent Vinson left with a shoulder injury.

Last season, he transitioned into a full-time starting role and was the most productive member of the secondary aside from All-American safety Eric Berry.

Rogan finished with 53 total tackles, including 32 solo stops. He added an interception, broke up five passes and recovered a pair of fumbles. He even started twice at free safety last season in place of Demetrice Morley, who was dismissed from the team last week.

And despite working mostly with the second team as a cornerback, Rogan has seen first-team snaps at safety and as a fifth defensive back in UT's nickel package.

That versatility will do nothing but help Rogan, first-year UT coach Lane Kiffin said.

"We've continued to talk about moving him around - nickel and safety and doing some things with him - even more because he can do so many things," Kiffin said.

Yet even with increased opportunities at safety with the dismissal of Morley, the secondary promises plenty more competition this fall.

Highly touted signees Darren Myles and Janzen Jackson will both begin their UT careers at safety, says defensive backs coach Willie Mack Garza, and athlete Nyshier Oliver could also get a look there in fall camp.

Of course that's nothing new. Spring practice has been plenty competitive already, says C.J. Fleming, who along with Art Evans has spent most of the spring as a first-team corner.

"The guys who play the best will play at the time," he said. "Every day we get out of bed, it's competitive. It's me, it's Rogan, it's Art. Marsalous (Johnson) will be back. It's always competitive."

From that standpoint, Rogan has had little trouble keeping up.

Two weeks ago, he forced a fumble with the second-team defense during a scrimmage in Neyland Stadium. On Friday, he picked up a sack.

"He's doing good," Garza says. "He's picking up on the system. He's working really hard. We've been happy with him, and of course we've still got a lot of work. But he's willing to do the work, and he's making progress. We're excited with him."

UT's coaches made sure they kept Rogan in the loop this spring, too.

After the first few practices, Rogan said he got word that he and Brent Vinson were being moved to second team to help foster some competition.

"Coach came and talked to us, me and Brent, and said to pick up the competition," Rogan said. "To help do that, I guess, he said they're moving us to twos."

Vinson, who underwent shoulder surgery soon thereafter, is out for the rest of the spring.

Rogan, meanwhile, has tried to keep a positive attitude and keep on making plays, regardless of where he falls on the depth chart.

"He's done a good job," Garza said. "He hasn't pouted about the situation that he's in, being that he started last year. He's done a great job and he's making progress and improvement and working hard."

Following Saturday's Orange and White Game in Neyland Stadium, UT's coaches will shore up their first depth chart.

"That's exactly what we're doing, just trying to figure out where everybody's going to fit best," Garza said. "It's evaluating them and see what kind of abilities and talents they have. At the end of spring, we'll make a good, firm decision on where exactly everybody's going to be."

But with offseason workouts, the arrival of those talented signees and fall camp still to come, nothing is set in stone - or even written in pen - just yet.

"It's not like I'm out of it right now or anything," Rogan said. "You've got the whole summer, and you've got August."

If Rogan's past performance is any indication, he's got September, October and November, too.

I bet G. Jones returns all the kicks this year. Maybe Nu'keese, but not Rogan.

Absolutey. I'm also excited to see Jackson and Myles come in and compete in the fall. Both of these guys were lockdown DB's in HS. Hell, I think Jackson was rated the #1 or #2 HS safety this year. It'll be interesting to watch them push Rogan for PT.

Heck, we were ready to name streets after Rogan for his big return in the Vandy game that put us in FG range.

I didn't mean that in the zoological sense. I just meant that he is fast and strong. I swear. What a blunder...

Agreed, remember Hefney as a freshmen? That's all he did!

hbk- what year did you graduate? the rogan thing is the first reason ive had to be mad at kiffin, you cant push a fulton boy to second team! my guess is rogan will work his butt off, and prove he should be on the field!

Rogan was a big dissapointment last year in the return game. The guy couldnt buy a big return to save his life. Lane Train needs to find someone more explosive and quicker than Rogan.

GO VOLS!

He'll be in the mix for sure. Too much talent to warm the pines.

CPF recruited probably the best RB in the state that year in Rogan and turned him into a corner. When Coker, Foster, etc. blew it - where could he have gone for the quickness and elusiveness we needed? RB is Rogan's natural position. So instead he is a slightly above average SEC DB in a sea of quality DBs at UT and in the SEC.

The game's not that hard.

Rogan should be playing TB anyhow. He is the best tailback on our team. But he'll find a way onto the field wherever they put him.

You could be right, but I'm pretty sure Coach Gran knows a good TB when he sees it...

Sounds kinda like he and Vinson were moved there just to make for some more position battles, to keep pushing them. He'll be on the field come Fall.

Thanks! Plenty of food for thought there. Like everybody else, I doubt Tyler will be a high first-rounder, but I really can't blame him for feeling that he has to give it a shot. And, who knows, team cohesion might improve without him. I like Tyler and I'm not saying he was at all a bad guy, but sometimes a team just grows when roles and expectations are shaken up a little bit. Addition by subtraction, if you will.

Also like everyone else, I expect Rogan to be a solid contributor next year, whatever role he has. The guy has too much talent and class to disappear after all that he has already done. I'm sure the staff knows what they have in him.

Wouldnt sweat it too much. My money says Tyler won't hire an agent, gets some free advice from the NBA scouts and comes back.

Well if he is better than rogan he is possibly a better player. Kiffin most likely will want the people on the field to get them the "W" If it came down to it would you rather have dennis rogan out against Florida and we lose because he can't catch up to Percy Harvin? I hate to even say his name but it's true. Id rather have the best player on the field

volhome#407234 writes:

For what it's worth, I see Dennis as a player that is willing to subjegate himself to the program. He did so by going from TB to DB, and is doing so by developing from 2nd to nickelback to 1st string. Sadly, we will never get to see him at UT play his natural position. Fortunately the Mufreesboro memories are there for those of us that saw him run roughshod in the title game. Dennis is used to being played to second fiddle, not even winning Mr. Football his Senior year. He made up for that with a championship ring and MVP award. Here's to showing up another set of non-believers.

Coach Kiffin can do whatever he wants to psych up the younger players, but there's no way that Rogan is not one of our best 2 defensive backs right now. And if any Vol can return kickoffs better than he can, they have not yet shown it.
