DT Quarles still has UT on his list

Kelcy Quarles has ruled out plenty of schools during his recruitment as a football prospect. UT isn’t one of them.

“I’m just looking at Tennessee, LSU, South Carolina and Florida because they’re in the SEC,” the 6-foot-5, 250-pound defensive tackle from Greenwood, S.C. said. “I want to stay in the SEC. That’s my list.”

Quarles has turned down overtures from Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina, N.C. State and Wake Forest.

Proximity will play a factor for Quarles, who wants to play close to home so that his ailing father can visit as often as possible.

“I want him to come see me play at least half of the games at home,” Quarles said during his UT visit. “This isn’t a bad drive from Greenwood so it’s all right.”

Quarles downplayed any in-state pressure there might be to stay in South Carolina for his college football career.

Despite the early cutdown, it may be sometime before he announces his final decision.

“I might wait for a while, just do a little bit more research, talk with my parents and pray about everything and make sure I’m doing everything right and make my decision from there,” Quarles said.

Quarles was plenty impressed with the 50,000-plus fans who attended the Orange and White Game on Saturday.

“The defense got after it; it didn’t look like a scrimmage,” Quarles said. “It looked like a real game. I was pleased with what I saw.

“That was huge for a spring game. That shows dedication to the team. That plays a big factor in recruiting.”

Quarles said he plans to visit UT again in June for its summer camp.

Looking Ahead: UT extended a scholarship offer to junior Jabriel Washington, one of the top in-state prospects for the 2011 class.

The athlete from Jackson Christian Academy has a handful of offers and took a recent trip to Florida.

wow....that seems like a contradiction......i belive rivals (or maybe scout) said that heaps was off our list also.....so that was wrong also!!!...

anyhow....maybe these quotes were from Feb.?...lol.....

i hope we line these guys up....subpar QBs look great behind a great OL....and DL can wreak havoc......

It may be nothing but any news on a QB is big to me.

It's my bet Quarles would rather end up playing pro ball as opposed to pumping gas. Between Monte, Lane and Coach O, we'll get this guy. Has anybody heard any more news about Jake Heaps or Phillip Sims? Please don't include Rival's stuff. It's useless.

I read something amazing the other day...the top recruit in Georgia for 2010 just committed to Stanford. He said that he didn't commit to Georgia because they waited too long to offer him. Now, it's 10 months to signing day for the 2010 class and this kid says that Georgia waited too long to offer? What's next, do we need to start offering kids in middle school?

He said that the drive to Knoxville was no big deal...you guys should go look at ESPN's top 150 for next year and all the ones that are considering us...hope we can reel some of these guys in...a lot of ends and DT.

scout has this guy committed to South Carolina, but what does that really mean.he is a 3 star DT.we need some 4 and 5 star guys who knows we will probably get some before its over.

What you fail to realize is that their stars are posted per their Junior year. After their Sr. year and even during the season they will go up based upon their playing ability. Look at Montori Hughes he is a 1 or 2 star based upon he was out for a year getting his grades right. Stars mean nothing this early in the game.

James Hurst has eliminated UT. Top 5 are UF,UGA,UNC,Ohio St and Miss St.

That probably means Orgeron has 3 guys dogging him.

Think you might be right and hope you are. This is one kid who could probably be swayed by the opportunity to be coached up by Monte and the boys with the NFL as a carrot!

We'd love to see Jabriel Washington in Orange. But give proper credit. He attends Trinity Christian Academy, which is in Jackson.
