SEC coaches insist Vanderbilt is always tough

In his first press conference as the Washington Redskins' new coach, Steve Spurrier spoke of the difficulties in leaving Florida for the professional ranks.

"There are no Vanderbilts in the NFL," he said at the time.

With the Commodores coming off a 7-6 record — including a second-consecutive victory over Spurrier's South Carolina team— their first bowl win in 53 years and a third-place finish in the Southeastern Conference's Eastern Division, times have changed.

In fact no one does! It is rather difficult considering it doesn't exist anymore.

Don't sweat him. He's not even a gator. Totally irrelevant.

Good one, coming from a fan of a team with more bowl appearances in the last 15 years than in the previous 90.

According to most UF fans, college football started in the 90s.

Because every newspaper in Tennessee and across the country is slashing budgets left and right. The KNS, the Tennessean and the Commercial Appeal have worked out a deal to share stories on each other's web sites. The Tennessean and the MCS have just as many links to the KNS' stories as vice versa.

I have always had great respect for Vandy, even when their football wasn't that good. Woody had some of the best defenses in the SEC while he was there, but always seemed to have no offense. Coach Johnson, AKA Steve Martin, has done an unbelievable job there. They continually improve a little bit every year.

I wish them all the luck and a successful season except against us.

You are dead on techster. Even with the "sharing" agreement, the Commercial Appeal sports section is now down to about two pages of valid articles every day except Sunday. The entire sports section this morning was five pages, three of which were ads and box scores. If it gets any thinner, it's going to disappear entirely.

Ha Ha Ha! Now thats funny! They are about to find out what the good old days where all about! Keep turning out the "Gator dumb" athletes. Flunked a drug test at the combine LMFAO!!!!!! Another shining example of a Gator student athlete!! HA HA HA!

Vanderbilt is a joke and everyone knows that. Why else would coaches "insist"?

StroVol writes:

Kind of a slap in the face article. Not real good in the win loss department, but tough. Vandy folks must be thinking "thanks alot".

Vanderbilt would be competitive in a lot of other conferences.

Get ready Collier. That's the trend in print journalism.

"Superior coaching"? Yes, I'm certain that's it. Guess that's why Phil's no longer the coach.

You are correct when you say it's a "talent" thing. One reason why we are in the shape we are in now. (Not enough of it.) In my view, Phil's success (in the late '90's) was when he had superior talent (as evidenced by the number of Round 1 draft choices during that time). When the talent level dropped off, all of a sudden his coaching prowess wasn't quite as good. Funny how that happens.

Moral to the story: Phil's coaching accumen didn't match up to his recruiting abilities. When the recruiting went south, the program went south because his coaching ability couldn't bail them out. Simple as that.

Doesn't give me any pleasure to say that TJ. Just the way it is. Kept hoping Phil could turn it around and it never happened. Kiffin and staff are going to have to work hard the next few years to resurrect it. Anybody that believes that it's a one year recovery is delusional.

Agree it won't be a 1 year deal. But I beleive this team will show up and compete. Sadly, FHCPF's last several teams didn't always do that.

6 NCAA Championships

By the way it is Dennis and I'll always be more of a man than you or any of the UF trolls could even inspire to be.
By the time you were born I had already protected my country while in the Army.
So before you try to disrespect me you had better get old enough for me to kick ur behind.
Don't think for a second that even at my age I couldn't do it many times even if you wore a gator T shirt.
I am and always will be smarter than you, stronger than you and a better class of fan for UT than you will be for UF.
You have not played the game long enough to even learn half of what I have already forgotten.
So go back in your room and play with the other middle schoolers.
Football is a man's sport and you have yet to even become a man.

OMG I have been insulted by a 14 yr old child too afraid to use their real name. Being that school is still in session and they are playing on the computer, with really bad writing skills one can only guess that they got removed from the special education course and got sent home on the short bus.
Give it a rest rookie. I would get in a war of wits with you but I don't fight unarmed children.
I love the trailer remarks gosh darn it jethro is that the best you can do?
You keep proving to all the UT fans that gator fans are mentally challenged.
By the way tell you mom to quit calling me.

Colliervol writes:

You've heard the old adage that children should be seen and not heard. We have a classic example here.

Fourteen??? FOURTEEN???? Hahahahahahahahahaha. That explains everything. (Everybody knows that a male's brain doesn't fully develop till he's 25.) I've got underwear older and smarter than this child.

The next time I pay attention to the opinion of a 14 year old will be the FIRST time. Back to the sandbox kid. Come back when you get a little older and after your brain fully develops.

I doubt that. For him to "take care of his mother", he'd have to get off the computer and out of his mother's basement every now and then. Obviously, he isn't doing that.
